What's the status on Grant Watanabe?

Grant needs to redshirt and get into shape.

Anyway, it makes about zero sense to grayshirt someone and then not redshirt him.

Let him get back to 100% and get his body back to where it needs to be. Then we'll enjoy 4 years of watching him play.

I know this goes against the roster plan and the plan for Grant.

But when you've got 2 starters and another from the 2-deep out (with guys like Rippy complete no-shows), I guess the plans have to go out the window.

I was hoping he would be an emergency only backup, but what that really tells me is no Gillam this week.
 
Severson is out with ankle. So that's 3 of the top 4 now out. We will go with:

Gamboa, Watanabe, Falo and Shaver. Shaver is a SOPH but changed positions after playing DL as a true frosh.

This is not the type of depth you typically see at this level.
 
I think even if Gillam was good to go, there was still a chance that Grant was going to play, without Gillam you would have no other choice but to play Grant. Can't go a whole game with only 2 ILB's.

May even mean no Gillam for more than this week. If it were a one time only deal they would probably try to find a way to protect the red shirt. This may mean that they don't expect much contribution from Gillam for at least a couple more weeks and maybe longer. Also that Seversons injury may be more than just a simple sprain.
 
And now Rippy goes from being a non-contributor to someone who is actively costing us someone's redshirt year and future roster balance.
