As one of the biggest promoters of HCMM during the process (some of you remember me stumping and lobbying quite hard for him, especially on those chats), I thought I'd put a few words down on paper. Sort of put it on public record, so I can be mocked if this season goes the way the last few have.
1. We have some talent. Embree did a pretty fair job overall bringing in some guys who can play. Connor Wood, Tupou, Crawley, Powell, Abron, Henderson, Spruce, Nembot. These are guys making a mark pretty early. Jon blew as a head coach, but they found some talent.
And the early marks for the talent that HCMM brought in are pretty impressive. We got some guys there. But they are TRUE freshmen. We are still plugging holes with 1st and 2nd year guys.
And there's not enough talent, with depth, with 3-4 years on campus, to be expected to compete with the mid-range of the PAC12..... yet. Injuries will likely mount and really set us back. More depth will be needed. And we got some holes. You are as good as your weaknesses, and we will have some of those exposed.
2. HCMM inherited a culture problem. Guys either didn't care, or lost their will. Leadership was lacking. Confidence had left the campus. The ability to put a bad play behind us and be confident was not at all evident. Defeatism was rampant. Ladies night was pre-eminent.
Is this something you cure in 6 months? I really don't believe that. The first two games will not only tell us, but it will probably make or break the confidence situation. Without confidence, you fall apart quickly. How deep has the change of Culture penetrated?
3. Scheme. The Pro Style scheme was contrarian. Some thought it would work as Pro Style QBs would come here. Turns out that simpler, easier to run offenses are the rage in the College game for a reason. I am confident we have better schemes now. Hey, we had no real scheme on defense, so it's got to be better. But it's a new scheme. These things take some patience.
So.....
I've been pretty conservative in trying to set expectations, choosing a 3 win season as the mean, depending on how injuries fall. I'm sticking with that. I'm not sure we have enough experience with the schemes to win our easiest OOC games and I'm not sure we have the depth to do much damage in the conference. I see no real benefit to setting high expectations with us fans.
But I'd be dishonest if I said I'm not more excited than I have EVER been for Colorado football. I'm absolutely ecstatic by the things I've seen. Coach Mac-I is a believer (well, he believed in Hawkins and Water Bottle also). Coach Barnett is a believer. And a lot of former players are now on board as well as believers. I can't wait to see it play out and I remain 100% confident we got the right guy, the right staff, at the right time. I look forward to witnessing progress on Sunday. If we can get lucky and avoid key injuries at a few key spots, we could surprise. Go Buffs!
