Which true freshmen will contribute on defense?

I think we can safely assume that Major, Henderson, and Polk are all going to start. Rippy is a safe bet to start as well with no setbacks in his recovery. Uzo-Diribe and Parker probably start at DE early on. So that leaves a lot of questions at other spots. What true freshmen do you see making an impact?

I think we see Tupou, Solis, and Henington playing right away at DT. I think Jagne sees the field at DE. At CB, I think Crawley sees playing time and possibly starts, but Moten's rise this spring may allow us to bring him along at a reasonable pace. Or Moten could slide back to safety (he started one game last year here). Still thinking Yuri ultimately redshirts (which will be a good thing), as well as two of the other three freshmen DBs.

So I have six true freshmen seeing significant playing time on this side of the ball. Thoughts?

I think we see one more true frosh at DE.

Which DBs end up playing and which RS may depend a lot on how healthy Parker Orms is and also on if Jared Bell is able to come back healthy and ready to go. Bell was supposed to be ahead of Henderson when he got hurt so if he can play that gives the staff a lot more flexibility.

I hate to see true FR playing on the D-line but we are so thin, especially at DT there probably isn't going to be any choice. Probably at least 2 of the DTs play and at least one DE.

I have a feeling that Yuri will get a good look at starting this fall

He'll definitely get a look. I read on Rivals that he was trying to graduate a month early since he normally wouldn't graduate until late June so he could get here in early June and learn the playbook.

Just curious: why do you see Crawley playing but Wright redshirting?

Mostly because he is just so raw as a player. You can see the physical attributes and flashes of potential on film, but has some work to do to put it all together. I also think after the tumultuous senior year he has had, a year of adjustment to college life would do him a lot of good. Throwing him out there as a true freshmen with the expectations could backfire. A year where he can focus on getting better without the media hoopla would help his longterm development.

All of this goes out the window if any sort of injuries happen at CB.

We shall see, but I do not think he is ready to be a starting CB in the PAC-12. If that happens, I think it is the result of several injuries.

I think we'll see alot of the dlinemen play. Kisima is gonna be a good one, hope he's taking care of grades. Hard to pick just one cause we have alot of good freshmen coming in at various positions. That said, I'll go with Solis. Seen him a few times on tv and he was a beast. Hopefully Bonsu gets healthy and steps up. We really need him to produce. If he doesnt, one of these guys will be taking alot of his pt, they might anyway.

I'll be very surprised if Yuri redshirts. The staff doesn't seem to care about redshirting guys even if they're not ready or minimal PT (see Austin Vincent/Woodson Greer).

BB brought up a pretty good point with the year Yuri's had. It probably would do him some good to settle into the system and get his feet under him a bit. That's assuming his presence wouldn't be required. If we need him to play, he will play.

I think they will let him play, considering all the negative rep espn gave him, he will want to prove hes a baller.

Wouldn't surprise me if that entire freshman DB class earned spots in the 2-deep (with the Nickel, that's being among the top ten).
