Couldn't feel worse for Derek. One of the guys on the team I respect the most. Hate to hear that he is having to deal with this.
Yup, quality guy. Contributes much more than his actions on the field. We lose a lot of leadership.
Hope he can come back 100% and play another year for us, should be able to get a RS year with only playing in three games.
Could get a medical for this one, sixth year.Huh? He has already redshirted and it wasn't due to injury.
can't he get the med hardship? he hasn't play 30% of the snaps, right?
That's not how it works.
There is a 5 year clock within which you are eligible to play 4 seasons.
Sometimes, if you have a redshirt unused, the NCAA will grant a medical exemption to someone who went down in the first part of the season and missed the rest of the year. Gillam, for example, used this last year. It allows him to be a 4th year junior instead of that abbreviated season counting as if he'd played in 2015. But this was possible because he had a redshirt year available to him within the 5-year clock.
Sometimes a player will miss 2 seasons due to injuries. When that happens, the player & school can apply to the NCAA for a medical hardship waiver to extend that 5-year clock a 6th year so that the player can play his 4 seasons. Irwin would be a candidate for this.
Derek redshirted for non-medical reasons his first season of his eligibility clock. There is no redshirt still available to him and he would not be missing 2 seasons due to injury. Unless the NCAA decides to be generous beyond any expectation, 2017 is Derek's final season as a Buff.
Yep, almost every team has to deal with them, but it's unfortunate that we've had 3 season enders, with one in all 3 phases of the game. We've shown to be fine at WR, but PK/KOS and DE/OLB is going to be highly questionable.Very unfortunate. Let's see what the next guy up can do. We never expected to get through the year with zero injuries.
So I'm guessing you didn't read the previous posts in this thread.he has already redshirted, so does a 6th year of eligibility do anything for him?
Unless you're Marcus Houston. That's not how it works.
