Will the Potential Loss of an NBA Season Help Attendance?

Rumblin' has a great blog post today about something I've been wondering for a few weeks -- the BasketBuffs attendance this season. He makes a great point that I hadn't really considered -- that basketball fans have to go somewhere for their fix. I think Rumblin's numbers are a little high personally, but I'm a bit of a pessimist when it comes to fans filling the Foam Dome.

What does everyone else think?

I think we need to make an effort to spam the Nuggets boards and DP/BDC articles a bit. Doesn't hurt to post things like, "I need my basketball fix. I'm going to Buffs games this year. Cheap tickets and a good time."

Certainly won't hurt. I wonder if altitude will consider picking up any games with their lack of programming.

It's definitely a marketing opportunity. You don't want to position the program as the "bargain basement" alternative, but you can subtly go after the Nuggets base. "Basketball is still being played at the foot of the Flatirons," etc.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I hate Altitude with a passion reserved for Nebraskans. Those SOB's can't even show pre-season Avs & Nugs games on their own damn network. And then they hire the worst reporters they can and force them to be complete and utter homers or they get suspended. There's a reason the Nugs announcing crew is considered one of the bottom 3 in the league.

Besides why would they show actual sports when they have go-kart racing and Fitness Time with Kiana?

God I hate Altitude.

I severely hate altitude announcing as well, I just hate not having games on TV more.

It'll be pretty a pretty negligible difference -- 10's extra instead of 100's for games. I do expect attendance to keep increasing, even if we take a small step back this year. New conference (although no UCLA at home sucks) + optimism about what Boyle & Co. are doing (and unfortunately while football continues to struggle) should provide an improvement on last year. Doesn't hurt that the OOC home schedule is slightly better as well with Georgia and a good regional game against Wyoming.

On a side note, how are Air Force and CSU looking this year? I assume we'll win at AFA, but CSU was halfway decent last year and we're on the road against them too.

Seems to me that DU would be the biggest beneficiary of improved attendance numbers from the lockout, but they play such an atrociously boring style of basketball that I doubt that will be the case.

And they're still in the Sun-Belt this year -- their best home game is Western Kentucky.

Ah, yes, I had forgotten they haven't moved yet. Louisiana Monroe and North Texas are real headliners.

On a similar note, I was at my Dad's house last night, found an old DU Media guide from 1976-77 featuring probably their most famous basketball playing alumni (may not actually be an alum, don't think he actually graduated), born as David Adkins. Rep to you if you what he is currently known as...

Yes the loss of an NBA season will make sure that some people will never watch them again just like me.

I tend to agree that DU will benefit more from this than CU will. People needing a basketball fix will find it much easier to go to the Richie Center than all the way to Boulder. Regardless of opponent, it would be a matter of convenience and cost, IMO.

I think attendance is going to be pretty strong this year with or without an NBA lockout. There's a lot of excitement surrounding the team. Boyle is a charismatic guy and he's easy to cheer for.

If you're an NBA fan, you want to watch a certain level of athleticism and for there to be a certain level of energy in the building. DU isn't an option any more than watching a high school game would be. CU's the most likely to benefit, but the benefit won't be very significant.

One thing I am confident of, though, is that the Denver metro has enough basketball fans hungry for a winner that CU could own basketball in this area. CU hoops could easily become a big deal and a very tough ticket.

It appears so far that I'm in the minority when it comes to attendance expectations this year. I really hope I'm wrong, but I just am terrified that if we start slow (which is a distinct possibility) that people will revert to the "Oh, it's the same old Buffs" BS and stay away.

Coming from a guy who really doesn't like basketball, I can see there's a difference in how Boyle approaches the game than his predecessors. This is definitely not the "same old Buffs" basketball team. Even if they lose a few early, I think it's safe to say that the team will get better as the season wears on, and that they will put on a good show at home.

I love hearing this. Honestly, I may just be a pessimist when it comes to our fans (look at any chat during a football game for proof) so I really do hope I'm wrong. From the sound of things, for the most part, ticket prices aren't going up so it's still one of the best bargains in the state for entertainment value so that should help. I know things will pick up for conference play, but I'm nervous about our non-con mainly because it doesn't really have any marquee names.

It's a more entertaining product, regardless of score. Bz's teams would bore you to tears while RP's teams had no concept of what an "out-of-bounds play" was supposed to look like. Even if CU struggles, it's at least "easier" to watch Boyle's style.

BTW, I don't expect us to struggle this season.

so it's still one of the best bargains in the state for entertainment value

This. Free parking, free popcorn (if you have season tickets), and damn cheap seats. You can't ask for better value, especially when conference play comes around.

Seriously. It's not much more expensive than taking my wife to the movies and it's a hell of a lot more fun. I don't know how anyone could go to one of our MBB games and fail to have a good time.

They're both in similar boats as us. Air Force lost all their main contributors from last year. Their best player is Sammy Schafer, a monster 6'11" center, but sadly he's had several issues from post-conccusions and I don't believe he's going to play this year.

CSU is being bold this year. They're going to be in the preseason-NIT, which should more than prepare them to play us. They also play @Duke and @Northern Iowa. Ogide, Franklin, and Nigon all graduated though, and they're going to struggle without them. Their best players are little guards who don't especially scare me. Jesse Carr runs circles around teams and Dorian Green is a decent playmaker but I'd rather have more of a true PG. Eikmeier is a good shooter but that's about it. They got two big transfers in the summer but they won't be eligible to play this year so it doesn't really matter. If we had Burks, we'd win by 20. Since we don't, it's hard to say how this game will go without seeing how we play without Burks, Higgins, Knutson, and Relphorde first.

Dorian Green graduated. CSU like us graduates their top scorers. But, Andre Roberson is far and away better than anyone CSU has. Plus, Carlon Brown is in this year. We'll win this year

Hope so, like anything, we'll get their best shot and it'll obviously be a hostile environment (although hopefully like 40% of the crowd will be Buffs). I'm glad we will have faced some quality competition beforehand, and that we will have also gone to AFA and hopefully gained some confidence and poise from getting a W in difficult environment on the road. Gotta hope we come out of Puerto Rico 2-1 (regardless of how) and then we must find a way to win at least 2/3 of that tricky @ AFA, Georgia, @ CSU stretch that follows. 5-2 would be an impressive given the tough competition heading into those easier 5 home games leading up to the start of league play
