Watching Caitlin Clark dominate South Carolina last night, it was apparent that Iowa is a team of destiny and nearly impossible to stop. Clark was everywhere all night as she dominated the Gamecocks from the field. After last night, she has back-to-back 40-point games including a historic 40-point triple-double. When they faced off, the Buffs lockdown defense held her to 31 points but unfortunately couldn’t finish the job.
The Buffs run to the sweet sixteen, paired with their stellar regular season, made for a really exciting year in Boulder. This team was so much fun to watch and is in a position to be even better next season. In a surprise post late last night, Quay Miller announced that she will be returning to Boulder, using her extra year of eligibility from Covid. The Buffs only had one teammate who used all their eligibility, that being Tayanna Jones, meaning that there is a chance they run it back with Jaylyn Sherrod as well. Listening to Sherrod’s interview after the win against Duke, I find it hard to believe that she won’t be back in the black and gold next year as she has found a home with the Buffs and coach Payne. Everyone eagerly awaits Sherrod’s decision, but no matter what decision she makes, she will always be a Buffs legend.
In the meantime, the Buffs opted to extend head coach JR Payne’s contract to a total of five seasons. Locking up Payne for five years is huge for CU’s program as she is a big reason for the Buffs' recent success. The Buffs have an opportunity to run it back but this time they’ve already been to the Sweet Sixteen. Listening to Sherrod’s interview after the win against Duke, I find it hard to believe that Sherrod won’t be back in the black and gold next year. That being said, no matter what decision she makes, Sherrod is a Buffs legend. The women’s team took over in a rough year for CU athletics and gave fans something to be proud of and look forward to. The pride and tradition of the Buffaloes will not be entrusted to the timid or the weak, this team played for something bigger than themselves, and hopefully, can find that same energy heading into 2024.
