#3 CU vs. #11 Oregon State
The black and gold took care of business last night, defeating the Oregon State Beavers in the quarterfinals of the Pac-12 Tournament. Leading scorer Quay Miller struggled last night, as she shot 0-for-9 from the field, and has turned in a stretch of rough shooting performances of late. Miller averaged 13.7 points for the Buffs this season and will be an important contributor down the stretch. If the Buffs want to make the finals and ultimately go far in March Madness, Miller needs to regroup and focus on finding her rhythm tonight. Charlotte Whittaker stepped in to temporarily patch the hole left by a struggling Miller, helping the Buffs tame a late-game surge from the Beavers, as she made two clutch buckets to extend their lead. She also played strong defense against Oregon State's tall players and finished with four points, a steal, and an assist. Frida Formann also had a great game, setting career highs for free throw makes and attempts, and dropping a crucial 16 points to send Oregon State packing. As a whole, the team had just seven turnovers, which is their fewest ever in a Pac-12 tournament game. This is a reassuring sign that the Buffs are becoming more consistent on offense.
#3 CU vs. #7 Washington State Preview
The Buffs face off against Washington State tonight as they seek their first-ever appearance in the Pac-12 tournament finals. Washington State is coming off a stunning victory over third-ranked Utah, and Colorado will need to bring their A-game to beat them once again. This is the third time this season that these two teams have met, and Colorado has won both previous games, but neither was an easy win. Head coach JR Payne has expressed respect for Washington State, noting their tough defense and scoring ability. The Buffs can ill afford a slow start tonight, as it won’t be as easy to battle back against a Washington State, especially after having played last night. It should be an exciting night in Vegas as they duel for a spot in the finals on Sunday.
Washington State will be a tough matchup, the Buffs will need veteran players such as Jaylyn Sherrod and Quay Miller to lead the way. Look for Miller to step up tonight despite the immense pressure as she's ready to take control under the bright lights. The Buffs will be able to separate themselves from other teams in March simply due to the amount of experience in the locker room.
It’s Friday night, you can sleep in tomorrow, tune in and cheer on the ladies as they push for the finals!
