As with some of the other "individual" Buff sports, thought we could start accumulating any news and results during the regular main (spring) season regarding the women's golf team in one consolidated thread. (Going into spring, the Buffs are, impressively to me, ranked "No. 14 in Golfweek (http://rankings.golfweek.com/rankings/default.asp?T=wt) and No. 19 in GolfStat (http://golfstat.com/index.cfm?event=public.teamRanking&gender=W)) after the fall season.)

I plan on starting individual tournament threads once post-season begins, which starts with the Pac 12 Championships scheduled to start April 22nd in Seattle.

(Note- don't know how great I will be at always keeping this updated, so anyone who sees anything regarding the clubbing Buffs is more than welcome to add updates to this thread.)

To start this main spring season, the Buffs are, per the below tweet, going to Puerto Rico (Rio Mar Country Club , Rio Grande) to play this Sunday through Tuesday in the Lady Puerto Rico Classic, hosted by Purdue.

Best wishes to the team in Puerto Rico and beyond!

Nice trip for the squad and a little influx of spending in Puerto Rico that the people need badly right now.

After a tough 1st round of the tournament and season, nice comeback for the Buffs in round 2.

"
RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – The University of Colorado women's golf team posted the second-best team score here Monday in the second round of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic, propelling the Buffaloes into sixth place.

Colorado, the only team to climb multiple spots on the leaderboard on the second day, turned in a 15-over par 299 score to move up four places. After two rounds, the Buffs have a 609 or 41-over par for at the par 71, 5,981-yard Rio Mar Country Club.

"Better day today for the team," Colorado head coach Anne Kelly said. "The conditions once again, were tough with a constant wind of 20mph or more. More of the rust came off today and hoping for a good day tomorrow from all the team members."

The fourth ranked Arkansas stay atop the leaderboard with a 586 or 18-over par two-day total while Iowa State moved up one spot into second at 23-over par 591. Kent State dropped one place into third carding a 594 or 26-over par two-day total. North Carolina State and TCU traded positions as North Carolina State moved into fourth at 32-over par 600, while TCU rounds out the top five teams in fifth at 35-over par 603.
...

The final round of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic will begin at 5:00 am MT. The Buffaloes will be paired with TCU and Maryland and will start from holes seven through 12.

So, after a tough 1st round, the Buffs finish with the 2nd best final 36 holes score (and only 1 stroke off the best score) of any of the teams. Definitely something to build on the rest of the season.

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – The University of Colorado women's golf team finished its first tournament of the spring season here Tuesday in fifth place at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic, hosted by Purdue.

The Buffaloes, ranked No. 19 in the latest GolfStat poll, combined to shoot 298 or 14-over par in the final round of the 54-hole event, the second lowest round score in the field. They posted a 55-over par, 907 overall team score for the tournament. Fourth ranked Arkansas won the event staying atop the leaderboard all three days and carded a 30-over par 882. Ten strokes back, Iowa State shot a 40-over par 892 to finish second while Kent State came in third with a 45-over par, 897. North Carolina State took fourth place with a 904 and Colorado rounded out the top five teams climbing one spot to place fifth overall.

"Pretty solid day for the team," head coach Anne Kelly said. "Although, everyone felt like they left a lot of birdies out there on the course. The last two rounds I think we were the one of the low teams, the first round just really hurt us. We need to work on getting off to a little better start."
...

Maria Fassi of Arkansas won medalist honors shooting a 3-over par 216 three day total. Celia Barquin Arozamena (Iowa State) finished three strokes back at 6-over par 219. The duo of Robyn Choi and Laura Kowohi (North Carolina State) placed third with a 7-over par 220 with Pimpnipa Panthong (Kent State) and Dylan Kim (Arkansas) rounded out the top five with an 8-over par 221.

"Overall it feels like we just went through spring training week and looking forward to the next tourney," Kelly said.

The Buffs will head out to San Luis Obispo, California to play in the Bruin Wave Invitational on Feb. 26-27.

The team's at a tournament in California the next couple days at a tournament that looks to have some tough teams (at minimum the top Pac one's I recognize) competing.

Looks like the Buffs had a relatively rougher 2nd round after a 1st round that had them in 4th. Except for un-rated San Diego State, who is currently 9 strokes ahead of the Buffs in 3rd place, all the teams ahead of the Buffs are ranked higher, so seems like a decent but not great tournament so far. Hopefully they can put together a great 3rd round and move up the leader board.

Edit- article on the 1st day-

And looks like the Buffs held on to finish 6th, even though having the highest score of any of the top 9 finishers in the final round. (As noted in yesterday's article, I'd say the Buff's may deserve at least a little bit of an asterisk regarding this result, as their 2 top rated players, both sophomores from Australia, had been playing in a tournament in Singapore (see post #6) this weekend, so assume both were extremely jet lagged and sleep deprived.)

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The University of Colorado women's golf team played its final round here in the Bruin Wave Invitational on Tuesday and earned a sixth-place finish. The tournament hosted by UCLA and Pepperdine was played at the Par 72, 6,323-yard San Luis Obispo Country Club.

Over the final 18 holes, Colorado shot 309, en route to a 304-315-309—928 or 64-over par final scorecard. No. 10 ranked Southern California was the team champion carding a 32-over par, 896. Eight shots back No. 1 UCLA took second at 40-over par, 904 with No. 4 Stanford just two strokes back at 42-over par, 906. San Diego State fell one place into fourth at 49-over par, 913 with Washington rounding out the top-five teams at 50-over par, 914.

"The day didn't quite come together as we had hoped," said head coach Anne Kelly, "This is a very tough golf course and if a player isn't quite on with their short game it can be penalizing. Kirsty was the highlight of the day shooting +1 for the day which was a very good score. We played the front nine well, but overall struggled at bit on the back. It's a good learning experience and we will need to get some good short game practice in before the next event."

I missed that the women started a new tournament today (in Northern California). Looks like they started off OK but not great in the weather-shortened event.

FAIRFAX, Calif. – Senior Brittany Fan of Colorado women's golf team holds the top spot on the individual leader board after one round here Monday in the Meadow Club Women's Collegiate. As a team, the Buffaloes shot a 291 and are tied for second place.

The tournament, originally slated for 54 holes was reduced to 36 due to weather. Teams played their first 18 holes on Monday after a frost delay and will finish the final round on Tuesday. CU entered Monday ranked No. 19 in the latest GolfStat poll and are tied with San Francisco in second place. Both teams are eight strokes behind No. 15 ranked Washington who currently sits atop the leader board at 5-under par 283. CU and San Francisco shot a 3-over 291 while Oregon State is in fourth at 6-over par, 294. Illinois rounds out the top-five teams at 7-over par, 295.

"It was not our best day," head coach Anne Kelly said. "But Brittany's round really saved us along with Robyn. Kirsty just had a plain old bad day, but she will bounce back. Elle, in her first event was really close to a good round but had a tough finish. Hopefully we can get everyone going tomorrow and see what happens."

Buffs will be back in action Tuesday with fixed tee times beginning at 10:00 am MT.

Looks like a couple Buffs had very good tournaments (congrats to senior Ms. Fan on earning her 1st collegiate (co-)medalist honors!), while overall the team had a decent tournament, and finish 4th (behind a couple non-ranked teams, so assume they may (????) fall a little from their current #19 ranking (although I have NO idea how golf rating/ ranking works).

The Buffs women are starting their next tournament, the PING ASU Invitational, at Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz. on Friday. Per the ASU preview (https://thesundevils.com/news/2018/...o-host-46th-annual-ping-asu-invitational.aspx), the #18 Buffs will be the 5th highest ranked team at the tournament, so it should be great competition. TEMPE, Ariz. – Colorado is in sixth place after the first round of the 2018 PING/ASU Invitational at Arizona State's Karsten Golf Course.

The No. 18 ranked Buffaloes carded a 7-over, 295, on the par-72, 6,337-yard course, with three golfers in the top 14, finishing within one stroke of each other.

Sophomore Kirsty Hodgkins had the Buffaloes' low round shooting a 1-under 71 and is just four strokes off the lead. Senior Brittany Fan and Sophomore Robyn Choi each shot an even 72.

No. 16 Washington is the leader after the first round shooting a 4-under 284. No. 50 Georgia and No. 15 Arizona are tied for second, one stroke back, while No. 17 Oklahoma State is two back at 286. Arizona's Bianca Pagdanganan was the leader in the clubhouse with a 5-under 67.

"We had three good scorers but struggled in the fourth and fifth position today," head coach Anne Kelly said. "A little disappointed in the overall score, but Robyn, Brittany and Kirsty really pulled the bus today that's for sure."
...

NOTEWORTHY: Hodgkins' 71 was her lowest round since logging a 69 in the final round of Washington's Edean Ihlanfeldt Invite back in October. It was her eighth sub-par round of the season, tying Choi for the team lead. Colorado matched Arizona as the second-best team in the field on par-3's in the first round playing those four holes at plus-4. Georgia was first at 2-over. The Buffaloes struggled on the par-5's, shooting 2-over; ranking 13th out of 14 teams. Fan continued her recent string of impressive play at a combined 4-under over her last three rounds. Choi tied for the first round lead on par-3's as she was one of five golfers to play those four holes at 1-under on the afternoon. Holes No. 8 and 9, were ranked the toughest par-4's in the first round where the Buffaloes four scorers shot a combined 5-over par.

NEXT UP: Colorado will match up with Oklahoma State and TCU for Saturday's second round with the first groups set to tee off at 9:45 a.m. Mountain.

Only in 9th out of 14 teams right now, I'm sure the Buffs will be looking to move up in tomorrow's final round.

The Buffs make their last round the best one, which leads them to moving up to 10th in the final leaderboard.

(It was a very strong field, so only 3 of the teams finishing ahead of them (2 unrated and #23) were rated below them, so assume they won't fall too much from their current #20 rating.)

Article on the final results - http://cubuffs.com/news/2018/4/10/w...-spring-lands-top-10-finish-at-silverado.aspx

"
NAPA, Calif. – With one final competitive round before the postseason, the University of Colorado women's golf team got the momentum boost it needed.

The No. 20 ranked and host Buffaloes shot their best team round of the spring, an even-par 288, to finish tied with Oregon for 10th place at 27-over (891) at the 2018 Silverado Showdown at the Silverado Country Club North Course on Tuesday.

After shooting 14-over on day one, and 13-over in the second round, the Buffaloes put together a solid effort in their final showing before the 2018 Pac-12 Championships, April 22-24, in Seattle.

...

"All the teams here are very competitive, it was like a practice round for the Pac-12's," Fan said. "It was a good way to see where we are and what we need to do; look at the little things we need to tighten up. Everyone is coming around and playing better, so we'll be ready in 10 days for the Pac-12 (Championship)."

NOTES: Colorado's 288 team score was its fifth best of the entire season and the even-par result tied for fourth-best in relation to par. The Buffaloes have finished in the top 10 in their last 19 stroke play tournaments. Fan's round was her second in the 60s this season, just one stroke behind her 67 in the first round of the Meadow Club Collegiate. With Fan's 12th place finish, it marks the 45th consecutive full team stroke play tournament the Buffaloes have had at least one golfer with a top 20 finish, dating back to Sept. 2014. Fan's 10 top 20 finishes this season ranks third in Colorado's record book while her 27 career top 20s ties her with Esther Lee (2014-17) for second all-time…Choi played the final 27 holes of the tournament at 5-under after playing the first 27 holes at 10-over. Choi's 40 pars tied for fifth in the field.
