BOULDER – One stroke.

That has been the difference between advancing to the national finals and going home each of the past two seasons for the University of Colorado women's golf team.

The Buffaloes have finished seventh at their respective NCAA Regional tournament the last two seasons, and in both, one shot out of the top six, which marks the cut line for teams advancing to the NCAA Finals.

With four of five players, and a coaching staff, that have endured that heartbreak, Colorado now looks forward to the NCAA San Francisco Regional, May 7-9. In a bit of irony, with a hint of teasing by the selection committee, the Buffaloes are the No. 7 seed as play begins at the Par 72, 6,369-yard TPC Harding Park Course.

"We have a bit of a chip on our shoulder," said Colorado head coach Anne Kelly, shortly after last week's announcement. "We've missed the finals by one shot, two years in a row. It was very heartbreaking for all of us last year, and I think they're very determined to make it through this year."

Aside from Colorado's tough-luck finishes the last two years, it should also be celebrated that the Buffaloes are embarking on their fifth-straight NCAA appearance and eighth in 10 years. With zero trips in the program's first 14 years (1995-2008), making the NCAA Regional round is becoming the baseline standard for Colorado.
...

Colorado will pair with No. 8 seed Louisville and No. 9 North Carolina State in the first round on Monday with that group set to tee off at 9:50 a.m. MT from hole No. 1. The Buffaloes didn't see Louisville this season, but joined NC State in Puerto Rico in February to open the spring season. The Wolfpack finished two spots and nine strokes ahead of Colorado at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic.

"Coming out of (the finish at) Pac-12, it's a great mark for where we are right now," Fan said. "You can never underestimate teams from other conferences. Once you get there it's whoever plays best."

Four 54-hole regional competitions will be conducted, each with 18 teams and six individuals not on those teams. From each NCAA Regional site, the low six teams -- and the low three individuals not on those teams -- will advance to the 2018 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships finals in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

Finished RD1 at -4, tied for 2nd with Kent State and 4 strokes back of UCLA. 4th place is at -1.

Great position for finishing in the Top 6 and moving on to the NCAA Finals. (y)

A bad 2nd round from the Buffs as they fall 7 spots to a 9th place tie, 2 strokes out of the 6th and final spot

(Edit- Ms. Fan is now showing as tied for 1st with the #4 ranked player in the country (who's from Stanford).

(The Buffs have lost one stroke since the above tweet, but still sit at -7 for the day and -1 for the championships, and are in 3rd. The last qualifying spot (with all teams still to complete, at minimum, their back 9, sits at +5 (where there's 2 teams tied). Full leaderboard as of this minute-

Sports never seem to be easy late in the season. Buff's cushion over 7th now down to one.

Struggling on the final holes again. This is getting way too tight.

Sounds like we have some holes in the back of our lineup. So to speak.

Great job!

Also, Pac-12 WG is the best. 7 of the 24 teams that made the NCAA Finals are from our conference.

Lau as our #4 is capable of going low. She has been close and then lost it at the end of the back 9 a few times recently. But, yeah, we need Lau and Vance (#5) to each find a way to post a round at par as a scoring count in the Finals to have a chance.

One thing I think is weird - and maybe someone can explain it - is that the WG team only has 5 golfers on the course while the MG team has 6. That's despite WG actually having more scholarships than MG. Doesn't seem to make a lot of sense.

Re our 4 and 5, think they actually had a pretty good tournament, and have shown good improvement as the year has gone on. (One is a freshman, the other a junior who was injured to start the year.) Just as reference, UCLA, the #1 team in the country coming into this, had their 4 and 5 finishers end up a combined one stroke ahead of our 4 & 5 over the 3 rounds.

Re the 6 men thing, I think that's only the Pac 12 Championships (tradition?). Most of their tournaments through the year, and the upcoming NCAA regionals and championships, only have 5 golfers a side.
