The women's golf team will be back in action Saturday and Sunday when they will be competing in the Peg Barnard Invitational in Palo Alto, CA hosted by Stanford. Here is a preview from Stanford's website:
The Lowdown
• No. 5 Stanford opens the spring season by playing host to the Peg Barnard Invitational (Feb. 15-16) at Stanford Golf Course.
• Stanford has claimed the event’s title seven times since its inception in 1995, most recently in 2013 after shooting a tournament-record 569. Visiting teams Cal (2011-12), Denver (2003) and San Jose State (1995-97) also boast tournament victories.
• The Peg Barnard Invitational will be the first of five tournaments slated for the Cardinal this spring. Last fall, Stanford shelved five top-10 finishes in as many events, including a first-place showing at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational.
The Tournament
• Now in its 19th season, the tournament is named after Peg Barnard, a tireless fundraiser for women’s athletics at Stanford in the late 1970s.
• The event will span two days and features 36-holes of stroke play.
The Field
• The 14-team field includes No. 5 Stanford, California, Colorado, Denver, Fresno State, Long Beach State, No. 17 Oregon, Oregon State, San Diego State, USF, San Jose State, UC Davis, UC Irvine and UNLV.
The Course
• Located in the foothills overlooking Stanford’s campus, the Stanford University Golf Course is consistently rated as one of the finest courses in the world.
• Designed in 1930 by renowned architects William Bell and George Thomas, the par-71, 6,084-yard course is steeped in tradition. Throughout the years, Stanford has hosted many intercollegiate and non-collegiate events, including the Stanford Intercollegiate, Peg Barnard Intercollegiate, Pac-10 Championship, NCAA Regional, NCAA Women’s Championship, USGA Junior Amateur Qualifying, U.S. Open Qualifying and The Gathering at the Farm, a former Senior PGA Tour event.
• Stanford University Golf Course has produced many influential golfers throughout the years. Former Cardinal who went on to play professionally include Melinda Daniels-Price, Allison Finney, Martha Freitag, Kim Hall, Sara Hallock, 1971 NCAA champion Shelley Hamlin, Hilary Lunke, Stephanie Louden, Mhairi McKay, Joanne Pacillo, Jodi Renner and Mickey Wright.
• Notables on the men’s side include former USGA presidents Sandy Tatum and Grant Spaeth, and PGA Tour professionals Tom Watson, Tiger Woods and Notah Begay III.

“We are looking forward to kicking off our spring campaign here at home. The golf course is in terrific condition, the greens are rolling fast and smooth which will provide for ideal tournament conditions. It has been over three months since we have played a tournament, so our focus this weekend will be on each individual playing within their ideal performance state. We want to have a clear mindset over every shot and an assertive, confident attitude towards scoring. The Peg Barnard Invitational is the first tournament on the road to the national championship, and we can’t wait to get started.”
The Stackhouse Special
• Stanford’s Mariah Stackhouse set an NCAA women’s scoring record with her second-round 10-under 61 – including an astonishing 26 on the front nine – as the host Cardinal won the 2013 edition of the Peg Barnard Invitational. Stackhouse easily won the individual competition for her first career victory as the Cardinal picked up its first team victory on the season.
• Stackhouse was 10-under through 12 holes. Her card included two eagles and eight birdies. She finished the tournament at 12-under 130 after a first-round 69.
The Last Time Out
• Stanford wrapped up the fall portion of its schedule at the Pac-12 Preview (Nov. 4-5) played on Hawaii’s Nanea Golf Course. The Cardinal placed three players in the top 25 of the stacked tournament, which featured many of the best women’s players in collegiate golf.
• Stanford’s 7-over was good enough for sixth among the 12-team field. The Cardinal posted respective rounds of 292-289-302 at the par-71 course.
• Mariah Stackhouse’s 3-under through the 54-hole Pac-12 Preview was good for seventh.Mariko Tumangan followed rounds of 69 and 74 with a 78 for a 2-over 221 and 20th-place finish.
The Next Time Out
• Stanford will travel to the UC Irvine Invitational (Feb. 24-25) in Santa Ana, Calif.
