would we be here if Mike Bohn did not fire GB?

The non scandal and the Azz wooping by Texas was UGLY!!!!!!!

But we had won 4 of 5 North Titles including 2 in a row. Our HC had won 2 B12 COY awards (Hawk and JE probably wont finish in the top 90% of voting the past 6 years) and we were bummed bc we were having many 7-5 type seasons.

Recruiting was going downhill, but GB seemed to do better that most with the NW type talent. He seemed to get the us against them mentality going for the team that JE was unable to get this year (no doubt a very hard task, lets hope for next year).

IMO, Bohn's biggest error was the PATHETIC DUMBAZZ extension he gave Dan Hawkins....but would we be at the bottom of the BCS football world had Mike Bohn not fired GB? BTW, didn't we have to pay GB a BIG bonus as he walked out the door?

Firing Barnett wasn't the problem. Hiring Hawkins was the problem. Extending Hawkins was another problem. Not firing Hawkins after 2009 was the biggest problem.

IMO, we would have been stuck with 5 -7 wins a year and no chance and hitting pay dirt. The change needed to be made if CU was ever going to get back to a consistent top 20 team.

You are probably correct.

Seems odd though that Mike Bohn now comes out with his plan/goals for the Football Program: To be in top HALF of the conference and to compete every so often for a conference Title. Seems that was about what GB was giving him.....

Barnett was dead the minute he got the Duke lacrosse treatment and the administration threw him under the bus instead of standing up for him and the kids, one of the most shamefull events in the history of CU athletics in my mind.

I like Gary as a coach and as a man. It is unfortunate that he never got another chance to coach and show who he really is.

Once all the fallout came he knew that he was not going to be able to win at CU. He was never a dynamic recruiter anyways but the restrictions put on him as well as the lingering talk about the "scandal" convinced him that he wasn't going to be able to win big at CU. He went on cruise control and the program was on the way down when he got fired. Would we have sunk as low as we did with the clown from Boise, absolutely not, GB would have gotten at the worst tough kids in here who would have played hard for him. We would have never seen things like the Montana State and the Toledo debacles, we would have lost to Missouri because we wouldn't have the talent to match up but no way do we get beat by 50 two years in a row while failing to even put up a fight.

In the end we would have been looking for a new coach and the new coach would have been coming into a program lacking in talent. On the other hand the new coach would not have faced a roster full of kids who had the will to win sucked out of them by a coach more interested in spouting philisophical mouthfarts than actually winning on the field.

The trends with GB were going the wrong direction. It was time to make a change. GB had a costic relationship with a lot of people. I don't know who was available at the time, other than Hawkins. Embree was still too untested (might still be), and the idea of Dave Logan was, and continues to be, utterly absurd.

I was listening to the old fossils Irv and Joe this week and some caller actually said that Logan should have been named the HC. They both said in dismay that CU didn't even give him an interview!!! :bang:

Stupid thread. Barnett was eons ago. I'm sick of looking back at what ifs. Embo and staff need to get their butts on the road and recruit like mad starting Saturday. Personally, I have a tremendous amount of faith in their recruiting prowess and believe they will finish very strong.

GB had lost the team to the point that an influential group of seniors basically quit. He would not have recovered from it if he was retained.

Wow. This thread is stupid bc you say so? Trying to find out how we got to the bottom of BCS football under our AD is not fair game on a Buff message board?? So stupid that you just HAD to respond? Thanks for posting your awesome wisdom!

Why do you "Personally have a tremendous amount of faith in their recruiting prowess and believe they will finish very strong" Your post is great and ALL...but why dont you tell us why you have this personal tremendous amount of faith that you wanted to share? I hope you are correct, but what are you seeing that gives you TREMEDOUS faith? Thx

Mods, why is there not a Thread Starting restriction for brand new posters? This dude is littering up my "What's New" section with football threads when I'm trying to enjoy my time in the Pub.

This thread is stupid because there are already a hundred threads about the same thing. Did you really think this was a new topic?

dog is new here, but I see the same **** he posted for years over at buffscoop. Give it a rest dog.

It is recycled....but I thought it may have added relevance as we seem headed for 2-10 with lots of blowouts in a new conference with a new coach. I surely did not expect us to fall this far and hard. Many may have seen it coming. I did not. I thought a new staff would add 2-3 wins (just for not being Hawk and the Boise Bozo's). I thought that based on the new lows we are hitting as a program the topic may have more freshness (HOW DID BOHN GET AN EXTENSION!) but I may be wrong. I was wrong once before also :).

It feels recycled.

So why don't you lay some of your vast wisdom on us. From what I see posted here by the other members you are nothing new to internet forums. Your considerable reputation precedes you. This can't be the first time you've posted a question like this on a board. What marvelous insights have other places provided you with on this subject? What does your own keen football mind hold in its deepest, darkest recesses. And why by the way do all your threads start with a question? It's the best way to stir the pot for sure but really why?? Inquiring minds want to know. Spill, share, give us the 411, lay it on us bro

I probably shouldn't waste my time responding, but to your first point this thread is lame because the firing of GB has been discussed ad nauseum since it occurred a half decade ago. Secondly, if you wanted to discuss the merits of Mike Bohn as an AD, then you should have couched the question better. For example, you might have speculated whether Bohn can identify and hire the right coaches. While that is a fair question open for debate, it has unfortunately been discussed on another thread within the last few days. I can't wait to you find the basketball forum, so you can open a new thread about the merits of keeping Ricardo Patton around for that final lame duck season. That's never been discussed before.

To your second point regarding recruiting, please note how I carefully selected the word faith, which by definition means a belief not based on proof. However, my faith is based on the fact that Embree and his assistants have been good historical recruiters at CU or elsewhere.

Yeah! If you want to stir the pot here, all you need to say is 'Tebow sucks!'

Pretty funny!!

So where do you see the recruiting class finishing? We are in on some big names, but the way the class looks now is not very good yet.

do you have a list of lame questions that you go through and then repeat?

Do you guys think signing Cody Hawkins put us in a bad spot in QB recruiting for years afterward?
