What a day of upsets...
State Penn loses at Virginia 17-16. Three seasons ago, Virginia was losing to William & Mary, by the way. Now, State Penn's not even capable of beating Virginia, even though they dominated the game except for three drives. The whole game was played at Virginia's end of the field, but State Penn is enjoying the fruits of "being humane".
Rice is paid to lose up at Lawrence, Kansas to one of the greatest coaches in world history, Charlie Weis. After Weis gets his Kansas Jayhawks to a lead, he calls off the dogs and doesn't know Football Is Four Quarters. Greatest Coach, indeed. Rice wins, 25-24 on four 2nd Half FGs. Huge home crowd, getting to see Weis' magic in full display.
LA-Monroe beats Ark in OT 34-31. LA-Monroe, like Rice and Sac-State, is paid to LOSE. And LOSE BIG. Yet, Ark refuses to win, so they pay AND lose. Ark gets the ball in OT and only scores an FG. But they're Ark. They're SEC. All they have to do is shut out LA-Monroe. But they can't. They gave up two game-tying TDs in the 4th Quarter, and they give up the Game-Losing TD in OT.
#13 Wisconsin of the mighty Big 10 goes to Corvalis to lose to doormat Oregon State, 10-7. It was 10-0 in the final minute when Wiscy finally scores, then they have to cheat to get the on-sides kick, but video review exposes the trickery and Oregon State rightfully is given the ball to run out the clock.
Texas and New Mexico played in Austin for their 3rd time ever. For the first two meetings, Texas won by identical scores, 47-0. Not this time! New Mexico has vastly improved. This time, New Mexico loses only 45-0!
#16 Nebraska goes to UCLA and loses to the Pac-12's doormat, 36-30, despite leading most of the game.
#18 Oklahoma State, claiming their desire to shoot more people to prove they're men, end up losing to Pac-12 doormat Arizona 59-38 in a massive blow-out loss of humiliating proportions. Okie State starts off with a quick 14-0 lead, then FIFTEEN personal foul penalties continue to hand the Mildcats chance after chance to score more. Okie State even hands over an easy pic-6 to seal the deal.
Wake Forest, one of the worst excuses for a football program in the history of the sport, beat North Carolina 28-27 with a last-quarter TD when UNC could only kick FGs.
Missouri and Texas a&m moved to the SEC and had good first-half showings, both leading at halftime but apparently need to learn that SEC Football lasts FOUR quarters - because both were blasted in conference opening losses on their own homefields. In front of huge sell-outs... there's nothing like humiliating yourself at home!
But I have to admit - having Embree and Bieniemy guide us to a homefield humiliation to Sacramento State - 30-28. Even if their FG kicker had missed and we'd won by one point - HOW EMBARRASSING. Sac State fans (both of them) just can't believe it. Their players can't either. Their coaches... even the accountants, who received the cash payola this week - they still can't believe the score. "We'll be there again to play for more, right?"
I just can't get over this. The Pac-12 doormats, by the way, are soooo happy to have CU in the league now. SOOO happy. No wonder they're all supporting Embree and Bieniemy.
