1st - credit where it's due. Pitt has a damn good team that was under-seeded. Florida had better be careful.

2nd - everyone involved with CU basketball needs to get a lot better and fix some glaring issues with handling big moments and pressure. Baylor neutral, Okie Lite neutral, Washington (responding when Spencer went down), today. This program is turtling too often on the big stage.

We were over seeded.

Pitt was underseeded.

The committee screwed it up, like they did in a few of the regions this year. We could have been the 12 taking it to Cincinnati, or the 11 dueling with OSU.

The boys didn't show up today and that is evident everywhere on the stat sheet. They need to grow up a lot this offseason. Every single one of them. One thing I saw pointed out is we are going up against a roster of RS-S and RS-J with freshman and sophomores. The class balance is a bit out of whack and it will get better in time. Without Dinwiddie, this wasn't our year.

yes. don't forget the zona games. Only big games we showed up for were at home: Oregon & Kansas.

Claiming everything would be "OK" with Dinwiddie is an oversimplification that ignores the real issues.

It's not the committees' fault we're going to lose by 30+. If we are "overseeded" we play an even better team, theoretically

XJ and Booker are just not good enough to carry us against good teams.
I don't think it's turtling. Booker was exactly like he was vs 'Zona.
We don't handle the Scott double teams well at all and it's not all on Josh.

The effort wasn't there. Timid and apathetic. I think it was turtling.

Is Round of 64/ *maybe* Round of 32 (like 2012) our ceiling? I don't see how we ever put together a deep run running an offense like this. Might get away with it in conference play, but the Big Dance is a far different animal.

Theoretically we are playing a worse team right now. They got it wrong.

The problem with your point is that if we were overseeded and Pitt was underseeded, we were playing precisely the team we should have played. The end of the day is that we lost by 30. Only 15/16 seeds from unknown conferences should lose by 30 in the first round.

It was turtling.

Does someone want to take the position that the Buffs came out, attacked, and made Pitt try to take this game from them... but just didn't have the horses to hang in? Go for it. And send me some of whatever you're smoking.

This was a timid Buffs team today that was never the aggressor. Hell, they were so shell-shocked they could barely hold onto passes on the perimeter during the early part of the game.

Agree with OP.
The brighter the lights, the bigger the wilt.

It does my heart no good knowing that the ESPN game day Arizona game in Boulder and today are the two games many causal fans most likely to remember when reflecting on this year.

For many, it's easy to point to Dinwiddie. But for me, it's about Tad finding players with ton of heart who play up to the level of their competition, and get better during big games. In prior years, there was some real Tad Boyle magic (sweeping K-State...coming from behind to beat Texas...winning the P12 tournament in 2012...The Valentines Massacre against Arizona at the keg...beating UNLV)

Sure the Oregon, KU and ASU victories this season were plenty exciting. But offsetting those signature wins are some real clunkers where the guys didn't show they want to be extraordinary.

I've seen too many games this year where the team started off sluggish or hit a dry spell. The number one issue to address is overcoming performance anxiety or whatever insecurity exists when the lights are shining brightest. Maybe it's fixable as the young team grows up.

I'm not talking about swagger, because this group talks a good game. I'm talking about actually showing up and balling.

It's not losing that was so bad, it's the effort that made it such a disappointment. We expected to put forth an effort, or at least appear to

Effort today was putrid....period. There was one point in transition where XJ literally just watched his man go for the ball, somewhere around the 13-0 point. Nik is right, we simply don't rise to the occasion. I'll take this over our program 5 years ago, but this game ended up being a waste of a good buzz...

Walking back and standing after turnovers where a little effort would have gotten a jump ball is completely unforgivable. Makes me ****ing sick to see that in a CU uniform. Disgraceful.

But you guys also beat KU in a big moment this year. Sorry for the loss, guys. I know it stings. Chins up.

That was the one exception. Of course, KU was the only team we played that is about as young as CU.

But this has been a "not ready for prime time" team both last year and this year.

The reason I'm keeping my chin up is that the Buffs have been able to win 20+ and gain at-large bids during these 2 seasons that were devoid of senior leadership from guys who are more than role players.

As I was saying at lunch with wspy and dio, if you had told me in 2012 that for 2014 Dre would have left early and Spencer would have been lost to injury mid-season... I would have responded with, "I hope we make the NIT."

heh.

"defensive effort was pathetic"
"future is bright. we don't lose one guy"

1. yes.
2. Ouch #benmills.

Thanks ... the Shockers are now OFFICIALLY the team I'm rooting for to win it all (it was unofficial before, being a CU fan and all ). Good luck!

This definitely puts Boyle and the program at a crossroads.

Is Tad going to spend some real time on the offense and come up with a better scheme....what kind of player development are they going to put in this summer (yes..I know how you feel about that slider)...if you are a defensive minded coach...how can you accept this kind of defensive performance and how can you improve on 3-point defense.

I also thought the one thing today showed was that we do not have a point guard on this roster besides Spencer...we might need Dom Collier to step up quicker than we hoped.

.

WTF are you talking about? three straight NCAAs? 4 straight 20win seasons? The successive season ticket sales recods? Argueably the greatest 4 years in our programs history?

We are young, we lost our best player and turtled on the road against a mature, well coached, good team - in a game we were expected to lose.

Cros

There was a level of give up in that game that concerns me....and some of it was by key guys
