I have never liked the guy until he ripped the selection committee for not including CU. Then, last night, he said something to the effect of "All you people who think any of these teams in the NIT should be in the tournament are wrong." Or something to that effect. OK, Dickie, baby, you are back on my **** list you two faced prick.

Makes me wonder if someone "got to him" after his initial remarks which makes me more suspect of the selection process and whether or not its rigged.

Vitale is an old man who is mostly retired. They call him up to give a comment every now and then. They dust him off and paint him up to put him on tv during the tournament and the Jimmy V fundraiser. But he's kind of turning into the Beano Cook of college basketball, just with Duke instead of Notre Dame as his obsession.

I really think you're not thinking straight with how CU didn't get in - some of your post selection comments were just very off-base. As for Vitale, he has done wonders for college basketball. People think he's an idiot, but they fail to realize that he was a pretty decent head coach for awhile. His exuberance for the game is great, and I personally love characters like Vitale, Corso, etc. They ooze with enthusiasm for the game they love. Vitale is a HOFer in my book.

...and guess what - I know it's still a sensitive subject, but he has a very good point. We were a BUBBLE team. In my opinion, all bubble teams don't really deserve to be in the tournament - otherwise they'd just be in...no questions asked. Yes, we got shafted when compared to some other teams, but time to let it go.

Not its not hard to argue against VCU. They could win the whole thing and it really wouldnt matter, they still did not deserve to be in the tourney in the first place based on there regular season performance.

First, I admitted I was off base in my post selection comments and appologized to everyone, so give it a rest.

Second, Vitale was vociforous in his disappointment with CU not getting in on selection day then turns around and tells fans of the NIT teams than none of them deserved to get in. That is why I posted "WTF Vitale?" He is talking out of both sides of his mouth. And I get why CU didn't get in and agree that there were some valid points against their inclusion.

^^^^ This. There's alot of teams not in the tournament that could win games in the tournament. If you didn't earn the right to be there in the first place, then winning a game or 2 in the tournament doesn't suddenly change whether or not you deserved the bid.

I agree. But imo there are exceptions. Tennessee this year, for example. They didn't even win 20 games and had a .500 record in a mediocre SEC. They had also lost 7 of their last 10 games. From a political standpoint, the program has NCAA sanctions hanging over its head. All of that was thrown out the window because they had a couple really nice wins before mid-December while playing a very challenging OOC schedule.

Not only did they get in, but they were gift-wrapped a 9 seed. Then, despite a very friendly officiating crew that only gave Michigan 1 free throw the entire game... Tennessee lost 75-45. I think in a case like that it's fair to say that the selection committee made a mistake.
 
Every time ESPN gets Dickie V on the air, he goes out of his way to praise the selection committee specifically. It wouldn't surprise me that he got a talking to after his Rosanne Barr statement - he took a bite of the hand that feeds him (NCAA), and I'd bet that the word got back to him that he had better chill or he might lose some of the spiffs /access he gets. Even senile people don't flip that hard.

Vitale used to be a very good announcer in the early mid 80's for the Big East on ESPN. then, along the way he turned into a parody and a set of catch-phrases and a cartoon. further, along the way, he stopped doing any real homework outside the ACC or Big East and that was painfully obvious outside the bare minimum during a lot of games. the only announcer i've ever heard with less preparation on a consistent basis was Rick Majerus. and i like Rick, but he was reduced to calling players by their numbers or wondering out loud who team x had played the previous week.

I worked at the Boulderado when Vitale was here to call the CU-Kansas game back in '97. I talked to him on the morning of the game, and he was asking me questions about our basketball program. Nothing major - just things like what our nicknames were, what we called the arena, etc. He asked me if we called the team the Buffaloes, and I told him that most people shortened it to Buffs.

Watching the tape of the game later, I was laughing that he used all of the things I told him in the broadcast. When Chauncey hit a three to make it close, he is yelling "Uh oh, here come the Buffs!!! They are going crazy in the Foam Dome!!!!!" Or something along those lines.

I always wish that I had told him the wrong information, just to see if it would have ended up on air.

None of this is an indictment of him as a broadcaster. This thread just reminded me of it.
 
Here at Florida, Dickie V did a couple of game broadcasts this season at UF games that I attended in the student section, and having never seen him in person before, I was pretty impressed by him...when he first arrived in the arena, one of the first things he did was to climb up and into the student section (no easy feat for a 70+ year old seeing as the prime student seats are raised off the floor by a few feet and then have a tall barricade as well to surmount...) and mingle with the students for a while - shaking hands, taking pics, chit-chatting with the students for awhile....during early warmups he'd go and shoot baskets on the court with players from both teams...just an unbelievable personality he has...also, his right-hand man appears to be "The Schwab" (from the "Stump the Schwab" gameshow ESPN had a few years back)...he was at every game Dickie V worked that I saw...

I make no comments regarding the content of his commentary, but to me, he genuinely seems to be a unique person amongst sports personalities...

His passion for college basketball is genuine, there's no doubt about that. I've always liked Dickie V and think he does a great job as an analyst.
 
Some years ago, Dickie V came to DU to help celebrate their 100th year of basketball or something like that. They had a "Pack the House" night, I'm pretty sure it was a game against the lambies. I got a chance to meet him after he gave a speech to alums and boosters (my Dad played hoops at DU), and I was blown away by his personality, and his absolute love for the game of basketball. He did the same thing that BuffAlum talked about in Florida, got the student section all riled up and made it an exciting atmosphere. The game wasn't even on ESPN, he just came in as like a special guest host for the basketball game. A truly enjoyable experience, I'm a Dickie V fan.

This and this. Back when I met him, he had a quality that filled the room, and he was a genuinely likable guy.
