In a tip of the hat to ESPN's Ted Miller, Buff nation finds our new P12 traveling partner and pseudo rival to the west looking at possibly changing their logo and mascot.


What say Allbuffs about suggesting a new name that better suits the Utes of Utah?


Utes may change logo, name

El Paso, Texas • Before watching his football team play Georgia Tech here in the Sun Bowl Saturday, Utah athletic director Chris Hill did not deny reports made by KSL.com that the Utah Utes are considering dropping the drum and feather logo.

On Saturday, Hill refused to discuss the situation other than to say the Utes evaluate the use of the logo every year.

He did, however, say the Pac-12 is not putting any pressure on the Utes to make changes.

“I can tell you ‘no,’ on that,” he said.

He would not respond to questions that there could be a possibility the Utes might consider dropping the “Utes” nickname as well. It is known there is some internal pressure from within the university to drop the nickname.

Utah has approval from the Ute Tribal Council to use the word “Utes” and the logo, but use of American Indian symbols by athletic teams has been a controversial subject for years.

U. athletic teams were referred to as the “Utes” and “Redskins” until 1972, when the Utes dropped the term “Redskins.”

Or name them after the official state snack. The University of Utah Jell-Os!

In a similar situation the Fighting Sioux are having to change their name. Interestingly the Sioux tribes are fine with it the way it is. Most of this **** is drummed up by big city, far left, wet farty white folk.

they needed unanimous approval from all the Sioux tribes... they didnt get it
 
This is the chance of a lifetime for utah. They have a reason to change that name which is stupid as ****.

It's a big pile of bull**** and always has been. The large majority of Native Americans in North America have no problem with Native American nicknames and mascots. They are either supportive of these mascots and nicknames or are indifferent. The only people who are against such things are the self-righteous sensitivity police in the pc crowd and a few Native American activists who like to draw attention to themselves by attempting to erase themselves. We might as well change half the names of states, cities, towns, rivers, lakes, mountains, forests and whatever else has a Native American name. It's bad enough what was done to those great, proud people without erasing things that actually do honor them and provide mnemonics to their history.
 
If the Seminoles can keep their name and logo, there is no reason the Utes shouldn't (as long as they permission from the Ute tribes.

Man, did you ever get that right! When someone explains to me that Fighting Sioux is racist and Fighting Irish isn't, then I might listen.
 
Since they're pretty much the same as BYU Cougars but are the younger sister, it only makes sense that they call themselves the Pumas.

Historically Notre Dame was a school full of Irish Catholics so they were choosing to call themselves that. You can't say the same about Sioux at North Dakota.

FSU has a very good relationship with the seminole tribe. The NCAA tried to strip their nickname and mascot and the tribe stood up and basically said **** off. The chief actually comes to homecoming to declare the homecoming chief and princess every year and donates traditional seminole attire. Its really a cool thing they have down there.
