You know we've turned the corner when...

I'll throw out the first one because it caused me to just about have a seizure every time I saw it last year. If our D shows blitz and the opposing QB changes the play at the line of scrimmage, and our D has the ability to see react to the audible and call off the blitz, then I'll know we're a better coached team.

The first couple of times it happened my wife looked at me like I had two heads, but by the middle of the season, she would calmly say, "we're going to get burned on the blitz again, huh?"

Unpossible. You can't adjust in the game or call a so called audible.......
 
When we don't start the season with a loss to CSU, an FCS team, and have Fresno State able to score 100 if they choose to do so.

And hopefully we never see a repeat of the 1st down debacle against Washington.
 
Things will be better. That does not mean getting to a bowl, but it does mean the coaches getting players to react instead of thinking, playing faster and making more plays. Three weeks until we see the proof on the field and beat the Ewes.
 
I know this is the kool aid talking, but if we could just get a few bounces to go our way early, leading to a 2-0 or 3-0 start, I think confidence could build and allow this team to achieve something that it has no business achieving. A win or two early, will help the team see that there is reward for their effort. I realize that it's likely to take longer than that, but how great would it be if we got on a bit of a roll early (leads to opening doors on the recruiting trail, opening pocketbooks for facilities, etc).

Certainly the dream scenario. While we haven't had this type of season at CU in so long it boggles the mind, it seems like typically couple times a decade teams have seasons where things just go their way, where you get the bounces/breaks and find a way to exceed the expectations in the W column. I could reel off ACC teams that have done this over the past decade in respective years as I get so much coverage out here. Granted, part of that is you have to be remotely competitive and have the confidence and belief in order to sneak out with a few more wins than expected in the season. HCMM is certainly pushing towards instilling that belief and confidence. While it may not be this season due to such a process with instilling belief and confidence, I think we're long overdue to have one of those seasons in the next 2-3 years where the breaks are ours for a change.
 
...BCS caliber recruits from Colorado want to play for CU.

I agree its long overdue but that season is still two to three seasons away IMO. Right now we're just learning to crawl and what goes on in the w/l column is almost irrelevant. Play as a team, play for the full 60, show some tenacity and heart. We do those things and I'll ignor the w/l.

JK but not by much.

As others here have stated, for me it will come when we look like a college football team. When we can run our plays without looking like a 3rd grade game of musical chairs, when we make defensive adjustments, when our body language and enthusiasm don't say we have already lost before the game even starts.
 
There's a big difference for me between "turning the corner" and being a respectable college football team. Washington is a respectable college football team, but to me, they haven't turned the corner yet. That will come when a UW/UO game is a toss up. Similarly, I feel like CU will have turned the corner when a CU/USC game is a toss up. When USC comes to town, and it's a meaningful game for both teams, and nobody really knows who will win, we will have turned the corner.

Good point, a lot depend on what you have in mind as a final destination. To get where we all want to be eventually there will be a number of corners. My sense is the the OP was referring to turning the corner towards actually resembling a respectable BCS level team.

With the team at rock bottom, the correct direction is up. From where we are now, turning the corner means discovering a new area of this horrifying cellar.

In Boydbuff terms, lets see if HCMM and the SJSU crew can get our Buffs to pick itself off the floor and begin the climb from the ranks of the worst team in all of D1.

I would not call that 'turning a corner'. I would call that 'arriving'. When that happens, we have 'arrived'. Turning a corner is just..knowing we are growing and getting better. A win against CSU..especially if ti can come in a decently dominant manner would be turning a corner. Right now after the last few years, I cannot say that anyone has confidence that we can beat CSU. I mean...CSU!! We are talking about CSU!!!!

To come out and play physical, look like we know what we are doing, and win that game by 14 to 21 points? I would say we have turned a corner if we can do that.
 
The term "one game at a time" typically is an eye roller for me, but I just can't think of another way of dealing with the repair work facing this group of players. Given the LAMB game is our first stage, being competitive would not indicate a turn of a corner to me. Figure out a a way to win this game as an underdog! Given the huge disrepair that was left in the wake of previous leadership, that would be an initial sign of turning up off the bottom. Then we can face the next corner and straighten out the skid a little bit more. So we have a number of corners to turn and they represent very different challenges. Being competitive in the PAC 12 would be a biggie, but can't get my mind around that just yet.

I do feel really good about the track record of this staff and changes in the AD position. Talent exist (in my opine) on this team although depth is clearly an issue... So for cliche number two I am "cautiously optimistic"... but genuinely so!
 
...when we consistently recruit a couple 4-5* players and when we consistently compete and win some against the mid tier PAC XII teams (UCLA, AZ etc).
 
When we no longer say things like "stars don't matter" in terms of recruiting, and point to that one 3 star player (out of two thousand) that got drafted last year, as evidence
 
When the Captain sees the iceberg, starts turning the ship and, finally, missed the iceberg that the previous two captains hit.
