Most of us are so ecstatic with The Rise we would probably be happy if the season ended today...at PAC12 South Champs. We all know that this past Saturday was the last 'easy' game we will get this year.
But we need to stop and think about the opportunity we have in front of us. In this zero sum game we call college football, it is very very rare to finish November ranked in the top 10. As a top ten team, we have a shot to win the National Championship. Regardless of how happy we are; these opportunities don't come often.
Think about it this way. In the history of CU football we have been ranked (in either the coaches or AP polls) in the top 10 eight times at the end of November. Each of those years we could have reasonably won the NC with a not-so-fantastic break here or there. For each of those eight times within the top 10 we won the NC once. ...and friends CU has been a good football team over its history.
If you allow yourself to believe that we might become a marquee program where we will get long strings of years to play in January for the NC; here are numbers from other such marquee programs. UofM has been ranked in the top 10 37 times since WWII and have won three NCs during that span. USC has made it to the top 10 25 times since WWII. Of those years they won the NC 6 times. Spread out, that is less than one per decade.
Here is to making the best of our opportunities!
