Your preseason grade of the CU position groups

Thought it would be good to see where everyone thought the Buffs are with our position groups at this point.

Here's the grading system:

A = Top 25
B = Top 50
C = Top 75
F = 76-128

Why no "D"... because if you're not even Top 75 it's a group that fails you and I'm not gonna pass that. I'd say that an "A" can cover some deficiencies in a "C" but that anything below a "C" and you're really putting yourself behind the 8-ball.

Your grade should be on the entire position group in the 2-deep, but give weight to the starters and whether you think they'll impact games.

QB =B+ (oh lordy do I hope this is an A-... but it's really thin behind Sefo until otherwise proven too)
RB = C+(wait and see on whether anyone steps up or a frosh appears here... lots of mediocrity until otherwise proven)
FB = B+ (including Pow in this)
TE = F (nothing until otherwise proven)
WR = B (lots of potential, but outside of Spruce, no elite WR's - shay is good, but has to step forward)
OL = B (this is a good rating iyam... hope it gels well)
Offense = B+ (this is with Sefo. Without... C at best)

NT = C (lost the starter, some depth behind him, but no game changers here yet)
DT = C (generous iyam, counting on Jucos to play well and kafo to step up)
OLB = F (until otherwise proven)
ILB = C (assuming a healthy Gillam slots in here. Who plays next to him though? No depth until otherwise proven)
CB/NB = B (replacing a 4 year starter, but upgrading athleticism. No B+ until we see some depth here)
S = B (shaky health wise, lots of experience though... lots to prove here. Does Bell come back 100%?)
Defense = C- (super generous iyam)

LOTS of questions on Defense. could go anywhere from an F to a C. Big weak spots. Let's hope Leavitt is a miracle worker.

K = C (I hope... assuming that walk-on turned kicker is legit)
P = C (I hope...)
LS = B (I hope...)
PR = C (this is generous considering how bad we've ben at this lately)
KR = B (tasmanian devil is good, but who else is decent?)
Special Teams = C- (generous till otherwise proven)

TOTAL TEAM GRADE = C+

Improvement on last year, and relying on winning early to make bowl eligibility possible. Still not a good team.

Some of my Cs are there because they are unknown to me. I think we will field an even better team than last year. We are a slightly above average team stuck in a brutal division.
 
QB = C/B (has to cut down on turnovers to be a solid B)
RB = C (need to see something here?)
FB = B (Big George / Powell)
TE = D (Important position for our offense, need someone to step up BigTime)
WR = C (need a young guy to step up and Spruce of course an A)
OL = B
Offense = C+

NT = C (unknown)
DT = C (prove it)
OLB = C (please step up someone)
ILB = C+ (maybe Gillam) D- (everyone else un proven)
CB/NB = A (our strongest best skilled group and in a long time)
S = A (really think we are in very good shape here)
Defense = C - ( going to have to see something more then the last 10 years)

K = D- (UNKNOWN)
P = C- (we"ll see)
LS = A (Smith is good)
PR = C (stop just catching the ball and create game changing run backs)
KR = C- (run one all the way back???)
Special Teams = C - (game changing momentum swings on this group)

This is a quote from Adam's Q&A with Leavitt on Rivals. Improving to top 75 in year one might be a reach.

I think the D was mismanaged, poorly coached, and bit by the injury bug hard last year. I don't think the low D ranking at the end of the season was a true reflection of the talent we have on that side of the ball.

Still a top 80 D would probably get us bowling as long as the O stays top 40.

I don't agree. We really have some issues with talent.
#1, we haven't seen a single explosive pass rusher in years. That guy hasn't existed on our roster. You don't fix that with coaching or scheme. DE position (along with freaky playmakers at WR and corner) require genetics. You need QB pressure first and foremost. Coaching won't fix that.
