CO High School Football question

Ok, I don't follow HS football very much so hopefully someone here can explain this to me. Why do the 5A playoffs include almost every team (including those with 1-8 and 2-7 records), while I read in the paper that teams that are 7-2 in 4A & 3A might not make their playoffs?

Probably because the 5A class is actually pretty small compared to the other classes and is dominated by a few schools, ie. Mullen, Columbine and a few others. Expanding the playoff field gives the impression of better competition.

I honestly think CHSAA expanded the playoff field to entice more teams to move to 5A from 4A. I think they are hoping to create a big elite class like Florida, Texas, Pennsylvania, California, etc have. Instead they are creating ugly match ups and not very interesting games.

schools can't just "move up". It's all based on enrollment. The cutoff is 1,600 students and above for 5A (I think). Of course, that allows schools like Cherry Creek, with 3,800 students to completely dominate the classification at the expense of schools with 1,600 students. Then there's a lot of back-room politicing that goes on. Here in Longmont, there are four high schools. In Boulder, there's only two. Both towns are roughly the same size. Why does Longmont build new high schools and Boulder doesn't? It's because they don't want Longmont and Skyline to have to compete against the likes of Mullen and Cherry Creek.

On a side note, Boulder and Fairview are moving out of the Centennial League next year and I couldn't be happier. This was long overdue.

I cant speak to CO but in CA you can play up a division or 5 if you want to my highschool used to do it in girls hoops and volley ball, we were D-5 (equivalent of D1 in CO) and played volley ball in D-3 ( CO 3a)and hoops in D-1 (CO 5A).

I would imagine if someone wanted to pick a fight with a bigger school that would be fine, but I could see the reverse not being allowed.

when i (89-91) and my brother (84-86, i think) played at LHS, HC Gorden Cramer made a point of playing the bigger schools in the OCC sched. i know the 3 years i was at LHS our entire OCC sched was comprised of the DPL and at times Ft Collins and my senior year we finally got Fairview. we beat them all.

my soph year, TJ won the big school state champ (4a?) and we won the next highest (3a?). the next year there was a re-classification of the schools and TJ and we (LHS) were in the same group. we beat them 28-14 for our 2nd straight state title and 2nd undefeated season. and yes, we would have beat Cherry Creek that year. No question in my mind.

we finished with a 3rd straight undefeated season, another state title and a #7(i think....maybe it was 13 ) ranking in the USAToday HS football ranking. Again, we would have beaten CCHS.

LHS used to be a football factory. there are a handful of former LHS players who went to CU. Biekert, Clint Moore among others.

i dont understand for the life of me why LHS would be afraid of playing the big schools? my classes were undefeated vs them. until my brothers sr year, they were too.

i remember my sr year, Wheat Ridge came into our place during the playoffs and during warm ups, they were running past us while taking the field saying things like, "we are gonna teach theses country bumpkins how to play city ball."

Exactly. A school with 100 students could play 5A if they so choose. That is why ****ing Mullen is 4A in several sports and 5A in football and basketball.

Don't get me wrong. I would absolutely LOVE to see BHS, FHS, Monarch & Broomfield in a league with Longmont, Skyline, Niwot & Silver Creek. But it would be a lot easier for that to happen if they had never built Silver Creek to begin with.

probably just been gone too long and thinking things are how they used to be. IMHO, there is no reason in the world LHS should be scared of any denver school.

you know. you spoke in another thread of how people still go to HS football games in longmont. my sr year, during the reg season, LHS was #1 in the rankings and Skyline was #2.

we knew a lot of those kids as friends at skyline. some of us had grown up playing summer baseball with them. one of my best buddies dated a skyline girl. hot too. :thumbsup:

i think in 9th grade we (Longs Peak Jr HS) beat them (forget the Jr HS for skyline) like 57-0. it was stupid. there was one play that ended up broken. evan, our QB was sitting there with the ball and looked to a guy named Walker Nightwalker, our FB and said "here!!! you take it." he ran for 50+ yards for a TD. it was just stupid.

yet, those kids grew up. it was #1 (LHS) vs #2 (SHS). from the denver post to the longmont daily times call, the crowd was estimated at 7,000 to 9,000 people.

i kid you not. now, i know its nothing compared to texas but, given longmont at about 50K at that time and what your average HS attendence in colorado is...... that was huge.

the people were stacked 5-10 deep in the endzones. we barely beat SHS and they lost in the playoffs and therefore didnt get thier second shot at us that year.

that game was definitly a great time. and believe me. the crowd was loud!!!!

i just dont buy that longmont cant play vs denver schools.

I seem to remember that size of crowd. I did not miss a Skyline vs Longmont game until 1993. always a great game.

other than sierra in the state semi-final game my sr year, that was the closest game LHS has played.

well, no. SHS was the closest game but, sierra was the best team we played in all of those years.

*now, i must note again. i did not play much other than mop up duty. i was on all teams, i lettered all 3 years but, i was not a starter, nor did i play much. i was definitly no stud on that team.

i was usually a battering ram for guys like clint moore during practice. :lol:

at that time, at longmont. 5'9" 175 lbs and a 4.7 40 was a 2nd to 3rd string DB. Pueblo South, the team that we played for our 3rd state championship, i would have been the 4th biggest OL man on the team. :wow:

Longmont has had some dilution of talent with the opening of Silver Creek High School. LHS would have a difficult time playing with the big boys now. And by big boys, I don't mean Boulder and Fairview. I mean Cherry Creek and Mullen and Columbine.

I was surprised to hear that they expanded the 5A playoffs to 32 teams as of last season. I thought 16 was too many because even then you got some lopsided 1st-round match-ups.

not that im aware of with cramer. van did with, i believe the girls volleyball coach. she preferred people of the same sex in her love life i think (NTTIAWWT) and van was not so accepting of alternative lifestyles. i think van was sent to louisville or something like that.
