Ryan Day - Head Coach Ohio State Buckeyes

Well keep in mind it would only be for 1 year. I am almost sure they could bump him up to whatever CU is willing to pay for a year and then promote him to head coach. We will see.
IDC if it is for 1 year or not, paying a coordinator that much money is ludicrous.

If he's staying I think it's likely Urban is retiring after this season and Day would be named HC for 2019, which obviously, we can't be too upset about losing our potential HC to Ohio State...
Bingo. Only makes sense if Urban is retiring this offseason.

Paying an extra 2 million for one year to hold on to the coach who you want to promote in a years time is nothing for a program like Ohio State. And it might not even take that if Day is willing to risk a contract with CU in order to take a job at OSU the next year.

How much more are they going to pay him?

For comparison
HCMM made 3.3mil, CU job likely offereing in the 3.5 - 4mil range
The top coordinator in the country, Aranda, makes 1.8mil
Day currently makes 1.5mil
So, the article didn't mention money figures, just look at raising pay again.
BUT it did talk about the promise of HC when UM steps down. Didn't say if the offer would be formalized in his contract though.

Would be a really huge risk for Day. OSU is not going to be able to give him any written guarantees about being the next HC.

Yes it would be a huge risk, but a lot of times coaches are willing to take risks like that for a job like OSU, it is a top 5 job and he hasn't been a head coach yet. Those opportunities don't come up very often.

Makes it an even bigger risk because tOSU will have their pick of coaches. Would they really go after an up and coming, but unproven first year HC? Tough to buy that. Anything is possible though I guess, especially when you are messing with the big boys.

Yeah I find it hard to believe they would just go with Day and not atleast interview guys like Campbell, Brohm, etc. but who really knows at this point.

Twitter is now littered with the news that tOSU will do what it takes to keep Day. FootballScoop reporting that Day will replace Meyer after 2019 season. I'm on the verge of depression. Could RG's home run hire be slipping through our fingers????!!!!

Maybe CU was just the leverage he needed to lock up a guarantee of the Ohio State job once Urban leaves.

Exactly. But it would be stupid of him to stay if all he has is Urban saying that his plan is to retire after 2019. Urban's only 54 years old. If his health made it so that he needed to retire, he wouldn't be returning for next season. And if he comes back next season he's very likely to decide that he's enjoying himself and wants to keep coaching. Ohio State is not going to tell Urban ****ing Meyer, "Sorry. You don't have a job here in 2020. We made a verbal promise to Ryan Day." Day and his agent know this. If and when that tOSU HC job opens up, he's in at least as good of a position to get it if he's the HC somewhere else at the time -- and he'll have millions of dollars more money in the bank with a much bigger resume at that point along with total leverage for whether he'd want to make that move & the salary he could force on tOSU to hire him.

In short, Day taking a verbally agreed CIW position would be about the dumbest thing he could do.

Unless they paid him 3.5 million to do it.

I just cannot believe that they would pay a ****ing coordinator 3.5 million. That is so far above and beyond what anybody pays. If the deal is we pay 3.5mil until urban retires... OSU is going to severely hamstring themselves financially.

I agree with this mostly.... except if Day comes to CU and bombs or struggles and suddenly his stock drops, maybe then he isn't in line for the HC job at OSU anymore

That's how the BIG programs play and why they win. If we keep pretending and not doing, we are stuck trying to achieve mediocrity.

But then he will still be in line for the 3.5mil to 4mil a year over 5 years that CU is likely going to pay him...

Unless they paid him 3.5 million to do it.
If they go obscene money - twice what any other coordinator in the nation makes and what would be Top 40 for head coaches - then that changes the narrative. Sure. That would rock a lot of boats around the nation. But even then I find it hard to believe that someone would choose to be an employee when he has a chance to be his own boss. Being a head coach, particularly at a P5 program, is a big damn deal. As a coordinator, Day's one season of things breaking a bad way and him ending up like Jedd Fisch was this year as a time keeper on a pro staff just months after revitalizing the UCLA offense, getting a QB drafted in the top 10 and finishing the season as the interim HC.

You also have to consider the buyout that it would take for Ohio State if Day were to become the coach at CU.

Paying him a lot for one year is almost certainly less money than paying whatever the contract buyout would be on a 4-5 year deal.

Do you think there is a significant part of Day's psyche that is worried he will fail? Maybe a tiny, insignificant part of his psyche so that fear of failure drives him. But if he's making career choices out of fear and a need to cover all bases in case he is terrible, then we don't want him as our coach anyway.

Question is if Day is the future Ohio State HC, will Schiano want to stick around?

Seriously dude, calm down. You act like Day is the only good coach we considered, and then you're freaking out about unsubstantiated rumors anyway.

If he's worried he's going to fail at CU in year one with a Senior QB and a Heisman caliber WR, in the Pac 12 South of all divisions, what is he thinking about his prospects as a HC at Ohio State in the Big 10 East with that program's expectations?
