Well ... Mel Tucker

Last year in Lincoln, I met one of our walk-on's parents at a bar. The father said that the players overall liked HCMM, but at times, he just lost his head for some odd reasons. It just at times came off as childish - not his adjective, but mine. There's an article in yesterday's Buffzone that talks about how cool Tuck is, and how the team believes that helps them. Montez particularly loved how calm and direct Tuck is. I can't help but believe this HCMM's lack of temper is behind Montez's statements.

I'm a HCMM supporter, but of course I believe he needed to be let go. He was a good man though, and helped us out a lot. But damn am I glad Tuck is here. I'm still a little underwhelmed by some of the staff hires, but whatever...have to let the coach hire his men.

I had the opportunity to have a 5 minute conversation with him in a casual setting a few months ago, and he is the same person that you see in the media interviews (meaning, he is not being fake in the interviews). The last thing he said to me was: "Well, now I've just got to go win some games." So far, so good.
Nice anecdote. I love the quote.

Genuine. He seems truly genuine. People, especially young players, can sense puffery and false bravado a mile away.
And it may be ultimately unnecessary for a coach, but I like that he still looks like he could light up a receiver on a crossing pattern. There is this understated energy he has, and I see that building with the team itself. I also like that he was up front, ready to run with Ralphie, as the gate opened onto Folsom.

Genuine leader.

Go Buffs!!

Boulder is beautiful. Boulder has improving facilities. But, Boulder is very white. For many of these guys from much blacker parts of our nation, that whiteness can feel isolating.

Coach Tucker doesn’t want to be labeled as a black coach. He just wants to be a coach. I’ve had bosses like him (current company’s VP and HCMT are very similar backgrounds and personalities). While they don’t like to make race an issue publicly, privately they’ll acknowledge that being a black person in a leadership role not occupied by many other blacks is a tremendous responsibility.

One of those responsibilities is to take care of your players by making sure they’re on the right path.
As a long time Buff Fan I agree with some sentiment from your post however I think some of it was in appropriate as well. Not trying to put you in the spot but we need to get beyond the color of your skin when it comes to sports. We can talk politics or whatever and point fingers but that isn’t what this is about. These kids expect an education which they will get but nobody I feel singling them out because they are young black African-American men or whatever. Let’s move beyond this.

I graduated from CU 19 years ago. The rate of black students then was 2%. It’s 2% now, which accounts for approximately 750 black undergraduates on a campus of over 27K.

There are 12 black head coaches out of 130 FBS programs good for 9%.

Race matters. When you’re a black person from a community with many other black people, going to Boulder is a serious culture shock. Having a coach who understands your situation and can help you navigate the waters is a serious plus.

Fine how does the other race communities feel about this? I see this as an excuse to young black men & women that just want to excel.

You decided to make a new account to race bait?

I don’t know what other race communities think. You should ask them.

A significant portion of FBS football players are black, but their coaches aren’t. Maybe you think it shouldn’t matter, but it does.

The race baiting came from the original poster. I have been following this site For at least 15 years. I’m just tired of some specific sent that post on here with an agenda. All I’m saying is give these athletes a chance no matter where they come from to succeed!

You’re a moron. An athlete on the CU team addressed the race matter head on. You think KD Nixon is a race baiter?

C’mon, man. I agree with KD’s assessment, as do the numbers. The only person here with an agenda is you.

OK fine let’s start. You’re trying to make a statement so go ahead. Is this supposed to make you look better!? My point however is we need to get beyond race. (End of story)

I would like to live in a fairy tale world as well, but race still matters a lot in 2019. Just burying your head in the sand and posting platitudes is a non-position.

It matters when the head coach is part of a really small group of black head coaches at the highest level of college football. Being afraid or ambivalent to pointing that out seems like a major missed opportunity to me.
