'17 TX WR K.D. Nixon (Signed to COLORADO)

Disappointing, but also surprising.
I'm surprised that USC would take our 4th best WR.
They usually have a stable of really good receivers, but they did lose a couple receivers so maybe they are thin at WR.
I'm interested to see if USC can bring out something new from KD because he didn't show much this year.

I wish KD the best of luck (except during the Colorado game). Mel Tucker actually gave him reasonable life advice before Tucker hit the door, when KD was seriously considering opting for the draft with his good friend Laviska. Get your degree, and then explore options. Now, KD has his Bachelor's Degree, might get a graduate degree, and can still explore his options. And we'll always have that Flea Flicker play.....

I'm friends with a USC superfan (who informed me of this), and while USC's WR room has a lot of talent, they only have one guy left with the potential breakaway ability that a healthy Nixon has. This pickup is a no risk, high potential reward for USC. They like it.

I’ve never actually felt KD had breakaway ability. I mean, he’s obviously fast enough to win a foot race depending on the game situation, but I actually felt his lack of explosiveness and ability to separate on routes were his downfall. Viska and Stanley had/have breakaway ability and the ability to erase angles. Never really saw that from KD

KD seems like one of those guys who in shorts and a Tshirt will be the fastest guy on the field. On some deep patterns we have seen him get downfield very quickly.

Problem is that this is just pure straight line speed. When you ask him to stop and start, to change directions, to use different speeds then he isn't as impressive. And this is P5 football, they may be a step or two slower but all the corners can run as well.

What always bothered my with KD is that his catch radius is very small. He doesn't present a big target for the QB to put the ball in. He has to be open and the ball has to be accurate or he probably isn't going to catch it.

With SC he is probably going to have a QB giving him a more accurate deep ball and he is also likely to be getting a lot of single coverage. Still if he thinks that going to LA is going to result in him getting big numbers to impress the NFL he is going to be disappointed.

Don't know who the OC will be, Harrell may be off to the NFL, but Kiffen must see some opportunity to do some things with KD that he can't with his other guys. Might see him on more end arounds or even working out of the backfield. He could also end up being a primary return man for them.

As far as going out and impressing the NFL as a traditional WR don't see it happening.

Good for KD, a graduate degree from USC is a life plus and gets to keep playing football. Hate to see him leave, hate to see him join a direct foe, but best of luck to Nixon.

I too think it's a good life decision, not so sure it's a good football decision.

He's going from an undesirable situation here to a less desirable situation there.

He needs to make sure he gets that degree.

Am I remembering correctly that the recent change to the grad transfer rule is that you have to pay for the full 2 year master's program to get a guy for a year?

If so that makes the moves of guys like Jalen Hurts so gross. Oklahoma literally made him a mercenary for football success.

Have no idea if it factored into his decision, but worth noting that KD has always mentioned his two career goals are FB and acting. Wondering if this is a professional move towards the latter.

I'm under the belief that KD is more serious about football than school and his plan would be to leave at Xmas to train for the NFL.
I think KD is a smart guy. He has now received two poor evaluations from the NFL predraft evaluation process. He may give it a go if he has a big year in 2021, but I think he’s seeing the writing on the wall and is using this as a chance to make a life after football.

Reasonable guesses but I am pretty sure he does not put any cred in those evaluations. See Phil Lindsay. And that's not to suggest he's dumb, but that he believes in himself and still has one goal. You and I would probably suggest he listen to the scouts and get a master's but hey, I would have said the same to Phil....

Huh? Phil and KD aren’t even in the same universe.

This is purely a Belichickian move by Helton: bring in a guy who is a cast-off from one of your rivals, and use him to gain inside knowledge about that opponent's playbook, and figure out a way to use that to beat them the next time you play. Pretty dirty move by USC.

That's the thing.

Nixon was given so many chances to get the ball on jet sweeps, WR screens, etc. He never did anything that stood out as him looking like he's on a different level than everyone else on the field with his speed or quickness or acceleration. As a receiver, he didn't show route running or hands that put him on a different level.

He is a good college player who doesn't have elite tools that would overcome his size disadvantage as an NFL prospect.

Elite in HS, good in NCAA, below standard for NFL.

Yeah, Phil has double the production, but I think his point remains that KD is very confident in his ability.
I think KD’s confidence waned significantly. I think he correctly understands that this U$C opportunity is his last chance for the NFL but also offers a nice backup option for the path he wants to walk away from football. If he were being unrealistic, he would’ve declared for the draft this year and not looked back.

Agreed. When I first heard the USC news, I figured it was because of his acting background. Makes sense and good for him

why do I have this strange feeling in my gut that he somehow is going to be one of the reasons CU loses again to Troy this fall?

Can’t tell if serious. Not sure Helton is too concerned with a team that has never beaten them

Yes. We have the same opinion on that.

I believe that KD believes that his lack of 2020 production did not improve his draft situation and 1 more year in a different offense will. If he foregoes the draft and returns to USC next spring, you will have been proven correct. I hope you are right. I still doubt that.
