Sean Miller Out at Arizona

I'm leaning Luke Walton. The optics on Pastner are bad due to the NCAA violations he recently had.
But everyone told me it would be Pastner last month. Compared to Walton it’s a meh hire. It’s Arizona’s time to prove if they are blue blood or just a good team. A blue blood lures Mark Few, Tony Bennett, Jay Wright, Scott Drew (only because he just won). Gains serious interest from Leonard Hamilton, Nate Oats, Mark Turgeon. Settles for Pastner or other alumni, or a coach from the Mid-Major or G5 ranks.

Am I wrong for thinking that this might also be Arizona still trying to weasel out from under the NCAA hammer?

I think the NCAA will slap a show cause penalty on Miller. If Miller was still the coach at UA with that show cause and he kept breaking rules, UA would be in major trouble with the NCAA. That is why colleges stay away from coaches with show causes and in Miller's case, fired or resigned.

UA is weaseling out from under the NCAA hammer in the future in this case.

ESPN says that Lloyd from Gonzaga will be the next coach. Good hire, opposite from the snake Miller was/is. I hope a Cause order is filed for Miller!

It's really not. It could work out, but it's equivalent (and maybe below) to if UA hires Bill Grier off our staff. That's not a hire a program that considers itself among the elites makes. It's a sign of a dumpster fire leading to boosters demanding a hire from within the family and having no adequate options within that criteria.

My point was a CLEANER coach that gives them a chance to save face

Eh, I don’t think that’s a fair comparison. Grier’s last season at Gonzaga was 2007, they had been to the elite 8 once as a major Cinderella in 99 at that point. They’ve been to 4 elite 8s and and two final 4s since then. Not saying Lloyd is a home run, but there’s a lot more clout behind him than Grier.

The former Arizona players quoted in the articles do not even try to hide their assholiness. So it's not my imagination that they attract and encourage assholiness, then they "graduate" and get advanced training. Super entertaining to read - real housewives of Arizona basketball kind of stuff! As much as I hate Arizona you have to be rooting for the new coach just to see them eat crow. Though it might be more fun if the whole program collapsed and everyone started throwing chairs at each other.

Frankly, all the P12 needs is for UCLA to be elite. The rest of us can rotate as which team is also great from year to year. Big 12 didn't suffer from KU winning every conf title for over a decade.

It was a weird year for ”blue blood” coaching hires. I’m not sure Texas and Arizona belong, but them plus IU and UNC this year. Texas makes a good hire with Beard. IU (Woodson) and UA (Lloyd) make underwhelming hires that at least make some sense; really who else would they hire? Hubert Davis at UNC is head scratching. Sure the hiring process would get ugly, but you‘re telling me UNC couldn’t find a more qualified coach. I don’t say the same about Lloyd at UA.

Wait till coach K retires, which I don't think is far off. It'll be a crazy situation unless they hire internally. Matter of fact, I think they'd make a big push for Brad Stevens.

From the sound of everything when Daggum Roy retired, Stevens would have been much more likely to go UNC than Duke. But honestly, I think Brad is pretty happy in the NBA.

And as for Duke? You thought Arizona was crazy about keeping it "in the family"? Wait until Duke opens up. It'll be one of K's hand picked choices.

especially as his contract stipulates he gets the role of "special assistant to the university president" upon retirement from coaching

Once K retires, Duke 'deserves' Bobby Hurley.

Isn't the Duke hoops organization pretty much run by K & his family for years now? The hire will absolutely be a familiarity/ loyalty choice.

Capel is somebody they'll look at in that scenario. I don't see Hurley though.
