Regent Candidates - Who do you like for CU Football and Athletics?

Who do you like?

Callie Rennison
Dave Gross
Aaron Harbor

Didn't see anything about CU Athletics on their pages, except maybe Dave Gross hinting his support. I'm unfamiliar with all of them and have ballot ready to fill out.

Your insights are much appreciated.

Go Buffs! Let's keep CU athletics at the forefront.

There’s some discussion over in the university President thread. Either Harbor or Gross are generally positive towards athletics. No info on Rennison.

Rennison is a big fat No

Gross has a D next to his name in the district and says he’s pro-athletics

Don’t think Harbor stands a shot

I posted this on buffstampede, but Gross would be awful. I had him for two finance classes. In both he accused me of cheating on an excel project because I used the same key strokes or something as someone else in my class. He brings you into the office and yells at you for cheating with the other person he thinks you cheated with. Both times I had never met the girl, gave him my phone let him look through all social media posts, text messages, friends, and this girl was nowhere to be found. Instead of apologizing he acted like I got away with something.

On being pro-athletics, he is just trying to win. Living with football players that were in that class, he treated them like ****, was not accommodating and told one of them that he is only at CU because he was good at catching a football (didn't hear this, but this is what the guy told me). So it looks like Gross will most likely win, which would really really be bad news. You have another Jack Kroll on your hands.

I met Harber several years ago. Nice enough guy and seems reasonably pragmatic. I hope he wins. I don’t understand the negativity towards his chances. Seems like he should have pretty good name recognition.

Getting a big glossy card in the mail with a check next to supports CU athletics and football was enough to give the nod to Harbor for me at this point.

I don't see a single word on Gross' regent candidacy site about being pro-athletics.

Rennison is endorsed by Lesley Smith and Linda Shoemaker, so that should tell you all you need to know.

Harbor at least has a section dedicated to his view that athletics are important

Not saying Gross actually is pro athletics. Multiple people have emailed him in regards to it and those are his claims that’s he’s very pro athletics

would love Harbor to win but if he has an R Next to his name on the ballot in the district I see no success

edit: harbor is running as a Democrat. sorry for the misinfo

Harber is running as a D in the current primary.

Harber sent out a flyer that stated he was pro-athletics. His flyer said that Gross was a ?, and that Rennison was anti-football.

I meant to take a pic but my wife tossed it

I half expected Polis to appoint a Democrat to that position. He surprises me more every day. I have to say I respect the way Polis has gone about doing his job. Much like Hickenlooper, I don’t think party affiliation really means a whole lot to Polis. Both were business owners and seem to have a firm grasp on the realities of how the world actually works as opposed to how they think the world should work. That’s a very unusual characteristic for most politicians.
As for how this new guy will approach athletics, hard to know for sure, but I’d guess it would be a relative non issue for him. I’m more interested in what his criteria for the new President will be. This hire could have long term impact on the CU-Boulder campus as a whole.

This x100.

As do all of us here, I want CU athletics to be successful. But more importantly, I feel like CU Boulder as a whole has taken a step (maybe multiple steps) back. The flagship campus has seemed neglected, imo, by university leadership in favor of Anschutz and CU Denver. This needs to stop. CU Boulder needs to be a priority.

We need a president who gets that, and we need someone who can take a look at DiStefano's tenure and see the disaster it has been.

It is true that focus has turned to the other 3 campuses, but Anschutz deserves it. That is a top-tier research hospital and a huge benefit for the University.

Boulder honestly doesn't need that much attention outside of athletics. They're the one campus that has completely rebounded on enrollments and applications. That is a campus with a great, positive reputation nationally and will continue to be a destination school for folks seeking a good education and a great college experience in a Top 5 college town.

UCCS and UCD aren't faring well at all, and thus take the brunt of the attention as leadership tries to figure out how to make it all fit together.

Boulder likes to pretty much do its own stuff anyway.

This.

A new chancellor is key.

You either need a president that is going to hold the chancellor accountable to deliver a reasonable football team, or you need a chancellor that will do so of their own volition.

Ideally you have both, but you absolutely need one.

We have neither, and have had neither for 14+ years.

Agreed on Anschutz, but a ton of the focus has been on it for a long time as it has been built and expanded.

I guess I have a different experience in terms of our national reputation. I never hear from people outside of CO about how good of a school CU is anymore. I hear 2 things: that it's a party school for rich out of staters who can't get into privates with a similar price tag, and that our athletics programs are awful (which is obviously a reflection on football).

This.

One of the benefits of having a good football team is that those games get broadcast and watched all over the country. And then people actually see the commercials about how good the school is.

On the east coast, CU has a current reputation as a party school with mountains nearby and legal weed. For people old enough, there's also a little "used to be good at football." Outside of a few niche fields, the academic reputation is "typical state university;" no better and no worse than KU, MU, or even NU.

Thanks Phil.

That's not just an East Coast perception. Nobody from the midwest thinks CU's academics are anything special either. Wisconsin is significantly harder to get into AND they have really good athletics. Imagine that

Don't mistake my post as a statement of the top-tier academics at CU. CU is good. It is a good school, but I'm not arguing it is a top-tier, high end 'ivy of the west'.

When I say reputation, I'm talking about the parties, the outdoors, Boulder, the overall student experience PLUS getting a good education. That is why it pulls in so many out of state students. I don't see any signs of that abating.

I would be careful comparing us to Big Ten schools though. Most Big Ten states are emigrant states, meaning more people move out than move in every year, whereas CO is a big time immigrant state. (Speaking about out of state more than out of the country.)

What that means is that way more residents of Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania care way more about the reputation and success of their respective major colleges and universities than residents of Colorado care about CU.

This is one of my major beefs with the elected Board of Regents. When maybe 1/3 of the electorate actually gives a **** about the university, how are we supposed to be getting the best candidates for the position? This is how we end up with Jack Kroll.
