Note- there was also a game scheduled for Sunday vs. Cal, but it has already been announced that game has been postponed due to protocol issues within the Cal program.

BOULDER – No. 22 Colorado is set to host No. 2 Stanford at the CU Events Center on Friday. The game is the only one of the day that pits two top-25 teams against each other.

Colorado (13-0, 2-0 Pac-12) is the only DI men's or women's team left without a loss on the season. The last meeting in Boulder was one for the history books. The unranked Buffs upset then No. 1 Stanford 77-72 in overtime, putting an end to the Cardinal's bid for an undefeated season.

But that memory has been completely put in the review view.

"I think this game is just like any other game we've had this season," fifth-year senior Mya Hollingshed commented. "We're just going to try to maintain and do the things we're good at. We'll just continue to play our brand of basketball. Last year there was a lot of hype because they were No. 1. This year is no different with them at No. 2. They are always going to be a talented ballclub, but we typically always match up well with them. It's always a marquee matchup."

Last season's matchup was played in an empty arena due to COVID-19 guidelines in place. The Buffs, in the eyes of the outsiders, snuck up on the top-ranked Cardinal. CU's win was at the time, just the seventh time an unranked team defeated a No. 1. It was also CU's first even win over a No. 1 and just the second time a CU athletic program had defeated the top-ranked team in the country (volleyball).

This time around the Buffs know there's no surprise factor.

"I don't know what their [Stanford's] mindset was coming into last year, but I do know they will be laser-focused [on Friday]," head coach JR Payne explained. "We could be 0-13 and they would still come in with that type of focus just based on what happened last year. We always try to be like that. I see Stanford as a team that's always extremely disciplined. They execute their scout. They run their stuff with precision. I see them as a team that is always like that, but it'll be even more this year."

It has been a while since a marquee matchup like this has taken place at the CU Events Center. Friday's matchup will be the first between two top-25 teams in Boulder since No. 17 CU and No. 4 Stanford met on Jan. 12, 2014.

"You always dream about going to college and playing for a top program," Hollingshed said about the Buffs' turnaround. "You want to go to the Big Dance and have all those experiences that you see on TV. I wanted to have those experiences when I came to college. Basketball isn't just something we play and just show up for. We want to see the rewards and achievements of our hard work. It's not like we're just playing for trophies and stats. We like to see our hard work pay off. Over my five years, I can say our hard work is finally paying off."

On paper, this isn't a game that inspires confidence.

But JR seems to get her teams way up to play the Trees & they've got a lot of confidence right now. So maybe. And it's enough of a maybe to show up or tune in & get behind the team on Friday.

JR will have the team ready as will Tara.

The season before JR came to CU, her Santa Clara team beat Stanford at Stanford 61-58. Since she has been at CU, we have had some close games versus Stanford before finally beating them last season.

Realistically, I don't want CU to get blown out.

The away game Oregon State has been rescheduled for Monday, January 17 at 3 PM Mountain. So we do get two games this weekend.

Hmmm....The above Adweek story I linked was a full story, then a little later it turned into a paywall with only the first paragraph of the story. Sorry about that. In any event it's nice to see the women hoops players getting involved in NIL. I read somewhere a few weeks ago that Paige Bueckers has deals set up that will approach a Million $$ by the end of her playing time at UConn. Might as well get it if you can I suppose....

It's great seeing this kind of matchup and the team doing so well. Unfortunately, student break was extended thru 1/20, so likely low attendence.

Lady Buffs playing some lock down defense on the 1st quarter. They’re getting after it.

This looks like it's gonna be a good one. Buffs came to play, but Stanford is going to respond to getting punched in the mouth. That's the kind of program they are. Can't let up at all.

I knew after the 1st quarter that Tara was going to Tara. On paper, Stanford is much more talented than us.

Definitely some ticky tacky fouls were called on the Buffs.

Buffs battled, even with the poor shooting. We are going to have a good season as long as the injury bug doesn't hit us.

Now beat Oregon State on Monday!

Great to see the CUnit and large crowd at the game. Hope this won't be the last timed this season.

CU's defense was tremendous throughout the game, but in particular in the first quarter there they forced 13 turnovers. That's absolutely amazing. I figured given what this team has done this season the Buffs would be effective in this area. And for the game the Buffs were credited with 15 steals, 5 by Sherrod and 3 by Wetta.

Unfortunately, without getting a lot of turnovers, CU's offense really struggled to get points in the paint and at the same time couldn't hit open treys. In the second half Stanford's defense had Cameron Brink - who looks taller than her listed 6-4 - just sit in the lane and intimidate anyone Buff who had thoughts of scoring inside 5 feet. Making things worse, Stanford destroyed CU on the boards, 49-27.

Had the Buffs hit a couple of their open treys in the last the last five minutes or so of the game they might have had a shot at wining or getting the game into over time. For the game CU was 4-17 from behind the arc, that included 0-6 from Hollingshed.

CU's most consistent scoring threat in this game was Quay Miller who led the team with 16 points was saddled with foul trouble and played only 19 minutes. Tha too hurt CU's chances.
