Former BYU Cougars and Virginia Cavaliers head football coach Bronco Mendenhall shocked the college football world last winter when he suddenly resigned his post as head coach of the Cavaliers.

Mendenhall has maintained that he merely needed some time to reset and refocus and that he planned on getting back into it, and on the debut episode of his “HeadCoachU” podcast with Bryan Fischer, he said he indeed wants to resume his coaching career.

“Really, the genesis of the idea, or the motive for this pause, is what it is, and it’s just a pause, and I look forward to recapturing the hearts and minds of young people, right, and helping them develop, and most likely, right, through the game of college football,” Mendenhall said. “I’m not sure there’s something more impactful.”

Mendenhall went on to say that, “It just seemed to me, and I was struck and prompted so powerfully, that this is the perfect time with (his and his wife Holly’s) kids gone to set up the infrastructure for chapter two of our lives in this beautiful place we’re building in Montana, for Holly and I to reconnect, and then we relaunch with more clarity, with more purpose, with more passion if even possible and perspective than we could’ve without pausing.”

Only 56 years old.

We'd be a competitive, respectable program within 2 years. He'd keep us at the 6-to-10 win level for as long as he decided to coach.

Might be my #1 because the floor is so high. We could trust he'd rebuild and have our guys well-coached.

I don’t dislike the idea of Mendenhall at all, but is it wrong that I kind of want someone who has a more…fluid relationship with the rules of modern recruiting?

I didn’t know he wanted back into coaching.

My list is now (in no particular order after Bronco #1)

Bronco Mendenhall
Jeff Grimes
Tom Herman
Dan Mullen
I don’t see why Herman drops below Mendenhall. Herman is a legit tier 2 (if tier 1 is blue blood only) caliber HC and borderline tier 1.

I respect the hell out of BM and what he would do for CU, but if we are all dreaming of best case scenario, I’m not sure why Herman isn’t the clear #1 choice

Yeah, we gotta get back to getting legit dudes from Texas to play in Boulder. This is why I like the connects that Herman and Grimes have from the jump.

Ahhhh but you forgot about the most important qualifier: “Bronco”

This is finally how we chisel out a piece of the Denver media market. That alone rocketed him up to #1 on my list

I like Mendenhall, but am I wrong that he feels like a higher floor Macintyre? I mean 22-27 in a not great ACC doesn't feel amazing

On the plus, has a history of resigning when things are getting stale. Have to like that

I'd still prefer a Tom Herman or Dan Mullen and maybe a few other names, but I could definitely go for a Bronco

His conference record is skewed by his first couple seasons and especially his first season in 2016 when they were really bad. Mendenhall feels like a Gary Barnett esque hire which would have felt underwhelming a few years ago but sounds amazing today.

I’d still prefer the higher ceiling going with someone like Herman, but with Mendenhall I’m confident we at least wouldn’t be a national laughingstock.

I think with Bronco, depending what conference we end up in, we'd be in the P5 conference championship conversation a couple times a decade, and the G5 conference championship conversation almost every year.

We'd never win, or even go deep in the playoffs though.

I'd be fine with that.

Was great at a G5 level program, average at a middling P5 program. Maybe he is the CU ceiling for a coach, especially right now. If so, that’s fine and there are obviously far worse options, but I guess I don’t see why he would be anyone’s #1.

Seriously wondering @slider

I could see him being #1 on a “realistic for CU” list

He's my #1 because I strongly believe it's time to bet on a sure thing. We know Bronco would do a good job and deliver a winning program. Probably around the Iowa/Ferentz level once he got his program established.

Virginia was horrible before him. He got them to respectable to good pretty quick. I feel like he would be a guarantee of at least annual bowl games which is best case scenario at this point

Would he get us to the 7-9 win/year area within the current CU athletic/admission landscape? If he's that kind of guy who can recruit, program build and maintain within the current constraints, AND you're telling me a guy like Tom Herman isn't (that TH would need all the latitude he enjoyed at Houston and Texas), then I would agree.

Also, see my edit... I don't think Herman is a realistic candidate for CU as I think he will have plenty of other options, so maybe Mendenhall is the best candidate on a realistic list for CU.

It would be a coup to get Mendenhall to CU and I don't think the chances are better than 50/50. Guy was a HC for 17 years and I doubt he needs the aggravation/brain damage that comes with the Boulder job. IMO he'd be at the top of the list of possibly "gettable" candidates. For candidates that would jump on board immediately I think you have to look at retreads or good sleepers who are currently in G5, or actively do some homework and find some up and coming current assistants. The Boulder job is not a high demand type of deal and the details probably get around more and more as time goes by. Sorry.

There would need to be assurances written into the contract around admissions, facilities, recruiting infrastructure, assistant salary comp, etc for anyone "in demand" to accept the job at this point, but it's still a P5 job with low pressure and an extremely long leash if you can win 6+ games consistently, which if all the listed assurances come to fruition should be automatic for a competent staff.

Our AD should do what Bohn did when Bzdelik was hired - put in CU obligations like a facility project. That got the BB/VB practice facility built despite the money not being there at the time they broke ground. CU will do what it needs to do to avoid the negative press and legal exposure of a contract breach.

Not the biggest fan of going after coaches meddling with retirement, but BM clearly has a vision and coaching philosophy that he has used to be successful. That would probably make him a good fit at CU considering those are two of the most important elements KD is lacking.
