Can someone explain the Oregon State hype?

I've seen Oregon State pop up as a sleeper playoff candidate based off of last season and Uiagalelei transferring, with 247 being the latest to mention them. The argument seems to be that a quality QB instantly elevates them to contenders and I just don't see it.

Last year, they overachieved with a strong ground game and defense, but they've lost 5 of their top 7 tacklers from last year, including Omar Speights who was their top defender. Omotosho is a nice get in the portal to boost their pass rush, but when the linebacking core is gutted, it's hard to see the defense be anywhere near as effective.

I guess the argument is that the offense will offset the defensive losses, but they also lost their top 2 wr's, who combined for 82 catches for 921 yards. They're left with 2 5'8" WR's who combined for 50 catches and some mediocre TE's. The running game will be strong again, but how does Uiagalelei elevate a passing game with no targets? They don't have anyone proven coming through the portal.

Overall, OSU feels very overrated at the moment. What am I missing that makes them a dark horse for the conference championship?

A quality QB? Lol

Personally I think Oregon State has established some consistency and has made some tough games for the normal top programs of the PAC 12. I think that is where it came from. Considering they once hung something like 24 points in one quarter to end the MM era for us, Oregon State is deadly when they are allowed to be, so I can potentially see how they could be a dark horse given the right cirumstances.

They're built similarly to Utah as a program. They were really good last year and that ground game is going to wear teams out.

They definitely have a play style that will keep them in games and they'll win a few they shouldn't because of it. That's also a style where you have to have a strong defense to compliment the ground game, and that's where I'm struggling to see it. They've lost their playmakers from the defense which is going to put a ton of pressure on DJ and that offense. That OL isn't going to carry them to the playoffs alone, imo.

I wouldn't pick them as my sleeper for the playoffs out of the P12. That would be Washington even though USC, Oregon and Utah will likely get more preseason hype.

But OSU is going to be good. I'd be very surprised if their floor this season is below 8-4. They're a Top 25 team, maybe Top 15.

Interesting. I'll have to watch them more closely this year. They just don't feel like a team who has that kind of talent, but I guess I could've said the same last year too. I don't think 8-4 is out of the question, but I see a much lower floor.

Oregon State won 10 games last year and upgraded bigly at QB. Seems pretty straightforward to me why they are getting the hype.

But they downgraded everywhere else. Is DJ that big of an upgrade? I'd take Speights and Gunderson over him and whoever they start at LB.

For the same reason Colorado is underrated. Last season is always Measurements to the upcoming season
