My 2 cents on Speedy and DS from last night

I have my own theory on why Speedy got the majority of the carries last night over Scott.

The best example I have is Cody's fumble midway through the 2nd. Scott was was in the shotgun with Cody, and it was a designed throw. Scott completely misreads the rush and crosses in front of Cody to help the Left end on the block, meanwhile, the blitzing right Linebackers comes in untouched, and blam, nails Lil Hawk.

Long story short, I didn't appear as if Scott was comfortable reading the 3-3-5 Defense for blitz pickup. Therefore, if he was lined up in the backfield, we might as well have had a giant marquee saying "HEY! WE'RE GONNA RUN THE BALL THIS PLAY". Speedy seemed to be a little more effective and WV had to consider the play action.

Both RB showed their youth though, I know both of them had to be told the play by lil Hawk at least once each.

Am I off base here?
 
Scott picked up the blitz from Cody's blind side on that play. The TE is the one who missed the block on the other side.

I think they just played speed on speed. Speedy just gave them a better option trying to get quickly through the 3 - 3 - 5 defense
 
The commentators on ESPN said that Stewart simply showed up on campus with the maturity and attitude of a starter and that he is ahead of Scott in that department.

Watching both, they are going to light it up for years to come. We all know Scott is going to be good. Watch his catch over the middle and how he abuses the tackler (got a face mask call in the play). He will hurt people. Once Stewart gets that one extra step and starts seeing that one little crease, he's going to simply burn people.

I disagree. It looked to me like he went to block someone on the left side who was already being blocked pretty well and left the guy on the right to come right in. He didn't get back in the game for a long time after that play. Hawk hates that sh!t.
 
Pass protection is one of the hardest things for RBs to pick up - particularly ones who've come from very run-oriented offenses. We will see Scott more as his pass-protection improves and that will, unfortunately, take time & practice.

Stewart looks like the 5 star and scott well.....I hope he turns it up soon because they hype hasn't met the production so far.

He's been banged up and he's only played 3 games so I don't think it's fair to be too critical at this juncture.

No I agree. TE missed the block but Scott looked confused on where to line up even before the snap as I recall. He doesn't look comfortable in his blitz pick-ups just yet, which is why you saw Sumler come in on 3rd and long a several times. He had some confusions in the CSU game as well in his pass protection.

To me Scott just looks like he is thinking to much instead of just playing football.

DS has lined up wrong at least 3 times this year (twice CSU, once last night), and he seems kinda uninspired so far too, including that he gained so much weight in the spring. I doubt these are real problems, though ... he's gonna be a monster.
 
I think DS looks great when he's gets a little room. His YAC were gnarley and punctuated by a big stiff arm. I think he'll emerged as advertised.

Speedy is obviously a superstar. We're fortunate to have both those true freshmen and Polk in the wings.

I think Sumler's arrival in the backfield last night was a clear signal that we intended to pass. Except for his one carry on third and long, we used him for his pass blocking.
 
way, Way, WAY too early to be drawing any conclusions on how these guys will pan out. RS played great last night, DS, according to Hawk was a little dinged up. We haven't even seen Polk yet. Let's not get ahead of ourselves here.
 
My expectations for DS are based on his college playtime. At this point, if Scott rushes for over 60 yards, gets 100 all purpose yards, and comes away with a TD, he more than meets my expectation for him at this point. He's no superman out there. He's a freshman who hasn't been in the program but for a few months. It's unwise to hang too much merit on the media and fan hype, because that stuff is fickle. Deeds mean more than words. Let DS earn his respect just like every other player on the team. He has every chance to increase his production with enough reps, film study, patience, and development of the OL.

Well in '01 Chris Brown was forgettable in the first 3 games (one game I think he didn't play at all) but we all remember how the 2nd half of his season went. There's lots of football left and I think the production we will see DS doing in November will be a lot different than what he's been able do in his first 3 college games.
 
The worst thing they could have done for Scott was to compare him to Adrian Peterson. AD was a freak of nature as a freshman and I dont believe we will see another freshman have as big an impact as he did...ever! Scott will come around, he also didnt spend the whole summer here like Speedy did.

AD is a truly gifted athlete. If he lasts more than 7-8 years in the pros I'll be amazed due to his physical style of play. To a point I agree with you about AD/Scott comparision. Something that LB told me :smile2: that is a very important piece of information.... OU's offensive line in 2004 were like this years o-line at OU, all returning starters who had played together the previous year. I think that made a big difference in what AD did his freshman year. Plus like Speedy, AD was on campus all summer too.

AD got to run behind a incredibly sick OLine. That made him look that much better.
 
Here's my take on both of them. They are very young and very talented. Speedy came in ready to play, he hits the hole immediately and gets himself moving north and south, which is tough for a lot of players with his skill set. He's also very strong for such a shifty back. When Speedy learns to set up his blocks down field, those 15-20 yarders he's been getting are going to start going for 50+ and 6 points. Scott, on the other hand, is a freaking beast. I've never seen him go down with only one tackler. He seems to have great vision but also the ability to juke people, stiff arm people, and flat out run over people. Once he learns the entire offense and gets better at the pass protection so that he can start getting more carries a game...man, defenses are not going to want to see him in the fourth quarter.

Needless to say, I'm pretty hella stoked about our two true frosh playing right now. We have a ****-ton of options with both of them going forward.

Can't wait to see Polk. Oh yeah, I'm a big fan of the Lockridge too. We're sitting on the brightest future for any backfield in college football, I think.

:yeahthat: I think with a strong, talented backfield in a conference that mainly focusing the pass, the Buffs should win big games. Most teams are geared to stop the pass first, now have to deal with a strong running game, much like BSU had, even though people think about the passing game.

I think it's brilliant, we will have a balanced team that will wear out most other teams by the 4th qtr. Unlike Barnett teams that petered out aas the game went along. Things are looking, I for one, am pretty happy, and will be even happier if we beat f$u, which I believe we can. Not too people think we will 4-0 outside of us homers of course. To be honest I thought we would be 2-2 heading into the Big XII.

he didnt have the "sick 0-line" in 2005 & 2006. he still was pretty darn good those 2 years too. have to remember he had a high ankle sprain in 2005 and a shoulder seperation in 2006, causing him to miss several games both of those years. neither injury was the result of the not having a "sick oline" like he did in 2004.
