Colorado football Mount Rushmore

My first place vote went to McCartney.

I think the fans got it right on this one. I'm not sure that RS would even win the vote for "Best CU Running Back", but that Heisman Trophy is a BFD. And I guess the NFL scouts rated him as the best based on where he was drafted.

McCartney, Salaam, Whizzer, Ralphie

That 4th spot is tough to decide on another player. I had too much internal conflict debating the merits of Hagan vs. Bieniemy, and whether one of the Andersons or Joe Romig belongs on the rock instead of another Mac-era player. Just went with the buffalo. She's more recognizable a face of the program than anyone else.

Adam with an interesting discussion here. I’m now going:

McCartney
Hunter
Salaam
Whizzer White

Depends on your stipulations, but Prime is already on it for me. There is more at play than simply wins and losses with Prime. Without him, CU football is dead and there is no Hunter, no second Heisman/Bednarik/Biletnikoff/Hornug/etc, no Shedeur who is likely #1 overall pick, no 9 win season, no sellouts or rejuvenated fanbase, etc.

Serious question.

No Prime, Dr. Phil still calling the shots.

Are we a part of the "new" PAC conference?

Keep in mind that Washington State and Oregon State fans are still trying to figure out how they get left behind.

New age of college football, you are in it or you are left out of it.

It's bigger than just Prime but without prime where is CU in the future.

Without Prime, we are still in the Big 12, IMO, but we are a complete afterthought and feeder program for our few talented players every year going to the portal and the program fighting for bowl eligibility every year, essentially making 6-7 wins a ceiling. The only thing that should be debatable about Prime being on the Mt Rushmore already is longevity, but since I believe he'll be here for at least another 3-4 years, I have no problem putting him there right now.

I will second this emotion

This is the panic about RG and the CU folks. Colorado Football has the new iPhone and has all the power to be a Billion Dollar business, or we could say to ourselves that our old Blackberry works just fine and so no need to use the new iPhone or pay anything to keep it.

McCartney built us up in the 80's and 90's to something Top 25, and Prime is now building us up to Top 25 or better. Salaam and Hunter are the symbols of that greatness within those periods. We could be Oregon State with one wrong move, I am more convinced than ever.

FIFY.

CU football greatness did not start with McCartney. He took the program to new heights, but we had finished seasons ranked in the top 5 before he showed up. We had a heisman runner-up before him. We were a top 25 wins all time program that had fallen into disrepair, but CU football has 100+ years of excellence, and a few decades of sucktitude - unfortunately much of the sucktitude has been in the last two decades.

Correct, but how many ESPN guys talk about anything more than 30 or so years ago?

You know who was really really good way back, MINNESOTA

Do they get any run for that? I agree we had our times, but McCartney put us on the map when TV was not black and white

There are only a couple people panicking here. This isn't a situation where Rick George is trying to save money or be some kind of shrewd negotiator. Prime has said on national TV (Rich Eisen) just a week or so ago that they are working something out "as you speak (speaking to Rich)". He has stated many times over the last few months his desire to be in Boulder. He has recruited a 5* QB and a top portal QB to CU this year. They are bringing in transfers left and right (more commitments this weekend, btw), and he is making staff changes at multiple positions.

This new contract is not the run of the mill extension like Dillingham got. He will almost assuredly be the highest paid coach in the Big 12 and there are a lot of stipulations that have to be discussed, negotiated and agreed upon (with the President, Chancellor and BOR, not just Rick George) with all NIL coming in house, assistant coaching salary pools, support staff and recruiting salary pools, etc.

Both he and Rick George have stated this would all happen after the season. It's been less than a week since the season ended. R-E-L-A-X.

We are still in the B12 but we aren't very comfortable.

The re-alignment of college football isn't close to finished. I have little doubt that at some point in the next decade there will be a significant sorting out of the game and similar to WSU and OSU (little osu?) a bunch of schools are going to be left behind.

Without the success that Prime has brought we could very easily be looking at getting left behind.

whenever these Rushmore discussions come up, it's rare that anyone suggests criteria.

The four presidents on Mt. Rushmore were chosen to represent the nation's "birth, growth, development and preservation".

sticking w/ those criteria and applying to CU football (with about 2 minutes of thought):
  • birth: Bryon White
  • growth: Bill McCartney
  • development: Travis Hunter
  • preservation: Deion Sanders

That’s good info, Hokie! Every time the topic comes up, I always assume that it’s the four most important people. I think you have the four reps correct for those categories.
