Shedeur Sanders - 2023-25 Tracking History Thread - Drafted by the Cleveland Browns (NFL)

Heard some random radio guys talking about the Browns this morning, saying Flacco and Pickett are locks to make the roster so Shedeur or Gabriel will get cut and whichever one doesn’t get cut will be PS only.

I find that kind of prediction to be completely ridiculous, but I also wouldn’t put it past the Browns to greatly mismanage the position like that.

I just feel like Flacco is there to be the veteran voice in the room and then why draft two QBs if you just want to roll with Kenny Pickett? The worst scenario for the Browns would be to start Flacco or Pickett and have no clue what Gabriel or Shedeur bring to the table when it comes time to potentially draft a QB next year in a better class.

They have two 1s next year and will have the opportunity to either move up and go big at QB or spend two 1s on building around Shedeur or Gabriel.

The biggest thing, to me, is that it all screams that they don't have a plan, or there are factions within the coaching staff and general management that have different plans.

Feels like it's >90% that however it shakes out, Shedeur's time in Cleveland will be a waste.

Pickett, if cut is a $2.6 million dollar cap hit. Small by NFL standards.

A lot of the media (same ones who have been hating on Prime since he got to CU) are dismissing Shedeur like a throw away draft choice. It's worth keeping in mind that while Cleveland took Gabriel before him they took him but they did trade picks 166 and 192 to move up to 144 to take him. NFL teams don't give up picks to take somebody they plan on cutting.

I think your guy is probably right. The Browns open it up to Flacco and Pickett to be the veteran "placeholder" with Flacco having the advantage coming in. Should he falter or get hurt then the season openning QB will be Pickett with Flacco either cut ($2.85 million cap hit) or on the injured list.

Browns have been dumb often but they have to know that neither Flacco or Pickett is their future. Flacco is 40 and hasn't been a premier level QB for a decade other than a few short spurts. Pickett is in his 4th year and has clearly proven that his ceiling is mediocre at best. If he wasn't a 1st round pick nobody would look at him as anything more than a body to back up a real QB.

The plan (hope) for the Browns is likely to have their veteran starter then let the rookies develop and see if one of them can become the guy to build around for the future. If that happens they can use the accumulated draft capital plus the cap room they will have to build around the young QB.

Rolling with Pickett would be a Brownsy thing to do. I think Flacco will start the season. Shedeur just needs to learn the playbook and work hard, he'll get his shot. Gabriel, I'm not sold on.
 
The Browns have some QB capital now. The Saints just lost their presumptive starter (or at least a guy who could be a starter). Their QB room is garbage. Wouldn’t surprise me to see the Saints looking to trade for either Shedeur or one of the other WBs on the Browns roster.
 
Shedeurs little off hand ball tap before he throws is not good at all. I remember that being the case, but when you watch it in his rookie film, it is worse. How come his QB coach did not fix that, uggghh
