Who is the best head coach in the Big 12?

I'd like to say Dan the man Hawkins, but the jury is still out on that notion. I will have to say Stoops. I was there when he got to OU and saw him turn that program around in as little as 2 years. Competed for and WON a MNC in his SECOND year! I dont know what his predecessors did to set him up, but that's tough to do nevertheless. Only 2 seasons where he's won less than 10 games. So, as far as the Big XII goes, I think he's the best coach.

I voted mangina, simply because he has ALOT less talent to work with than Stoops does. That kind of crazy talent will make an average coach look pretty good. That being said, I don't believe for a minute that Stoops is average either. I think those two are two of the better coaches in the B12; it is just hard to tell with the disparity between the facilities, boosters, revenue, and star ratings of the kids. Would either do as well in the other situation? I don't know. Mangina seems to be the type that can do well with less, much like Barney was before he gave up recruiting.

Stoops, on the other hand, has the name now to go anywhere and recruit well, so will he ever be in a situation where he starts at a school that had nothing? (and OU certainly even with the down years before Stoops still had the boosters and rep for Stopps to leverage).

I voted Stoops based on the NC and the record over the last decade. but, I wonder if Gundy wins 10 games again this year and you throw out the alumni angle....he could probably be a guy to get a top tier job. but, being an Oklahoman and a Poke he may be there are long as they'll have him. cycles say that downturns catch up to even good OSU coaches after a few years. see: Pat Jones, Bob Simmons, even Les left Gundy with a roster full of criminals and malcontents (Gundy booted like 15 guys--a lot of them starters).

will be interesting to see what OSU does this year with Young at DC. he's a real coach. they are gonna score a ton of points. remains to be seen if they are another Tech like contender or they can break through. i really thought they would beat OU last year.

I go with Stoops as well, and OU has actually finished ahead of Texas 3-4 times in recruiting rankings in the last 10 years or so.

The guy I'm interesting in seeing this year is Briles at Baylor. Very possible they may go bowling this year.

He didn't have to recruit squat but a decent JC QB, when he arrived, John Blake left him a very full cupboard. And he has since drawn from the same huge talent base as Mack Brown, only w/o using a modicum of scruples.

He does get good assistants, but his best choices(Leech, Mangino, lil' bro Mike) were from his days at KSU.

Agree about Briles. I think Baylor will upset a couple teams as well. NU better look out when they're down there. If I remember correctly, Baylor was pretty competitive in Lincoln last year.

i liked Briles at Houston. and i sort of hoped he'd wait a year and take a job that wasn't Baylor for his own sake. but, my feeling about Baylor this year is this: Guy Morriss had everybody saying the same things they are saying about Briles early in his tenure. and, were it not for their QB getting hurt midseason in 05 maybe (the year they took both OU and ATM into OT only to lose in Norman and Col. Station respectively, after the injury)....they win 6 games and are bowl eligible. if that happens, who knows how it goes for Morriss?

obviously, BU has the stud kid at QB...so, that helps. ATM may be dreadful, but it's gonna be tough for BU to rack up a lot of W's in the South, numerically speaking.

Key to Baylor's season will be four games IMO: @ ISU, NU, @ A&M, and TT (playing in Cowboys stadium). They probably need to go 3-1 in those games to make a bowl. Not impossible, but not easy either.

I'm not on the Baylor bandwagon at all. I think they go 2-2 in the non-conference (losing to Wake Forest and Syracuse). Then they go 1-7 in-conference (beating only Iowa State). After going 3-9, everyone says "same old Baylor" and their recruiting class falls apart.

Right now I would have to say Stoops. His MNC and half dozen Big XII championships put him at the top. He needs to concentrate on those Bowl games a little more. Losing to Florida was not a disgrace but not being ready for BSU ane WVU were not good moments for him. :huh:

Mangino got his program competing for attention with basketball in November. To say I'm impressed would be an understatement.

i agree about Griffin. you let a very athletic guy run around and get loose in a high % throw offense.....when the expectations are so low it's hard to know yet. he accounts for a lot of yards but you lose? is he Jamal Lord or Charlie Ward?

Ron Mercer used to score 25 a night for the Nuggets but we still lost by 10.

I don't see him staying at Baylor long term, if they win, but I also don't see him running for a Pac-10 job. He's a very good coach who is going to get a lot of offers if he succeeds at a place like Baylor.

i didn't get the Sherman hire at all. they are recruiting pretty well, but don't they always? i think he was there under RC or maybe even Jackie Sherrill for a year as an assistant and that seems to be the "he gets Aggieland" connection that made him the guy. it's not like he was on anybody else's list.

additionally, the NFL retread hire (looking for another Pete Carroll) fad seemed to peter out a few years ago and the Ags step up and hire a career 7-9 wins with Brett Favre guy last year.
