people- If Hawk keeps his job he gets to recruit on the basis of a
3-9 or 4-8 season and I fully expect the 2010 recruiting class to be
between 50-60th ranked at best.

I have had that mindset since a the day after the Toledo game. I wanted a blowout either way so I knew either he had this thing on the right track again and CSU was a fluke, or he was exposed and we knew it was time to move on. Only problem is, we have already experienced a disaster and the AD has not made a move which was my fear all along. At this point I think the AD doesnt care about winning and losing, but only $$$ and as long as ticket sales are not hurt, nothing will happen.

Which brings me to pointing out that if you are looking at going to a sporting event in the area, the Avs and Broncos are best in their leagues, and combine that with the Nuggets who are top 4 in the NBA your sporting $$ can get you a whole lot more excitement in Denver these days!

This season has to go one of 2 ways.

Buffs need to turn it around, win the rest of their games, finish 7-5, and win either the B12 Championship game or their bowl game. That way recruiting finishes very strong, and Hawkins comes back with a team that has a lot of momentum heading into the offseason.

Buffs completely fall apart the rest of the season to finish with no more than 3 or 4 wins, recruits see opportunity to play early and are excited by a new coach, and the team rallies behind a new staff going into next year.

5 or 6 wins and we're probably stuck with Hawkins next year, a mediocre recruiting class, and a team that's been taught to accept mediocrity as acceptable.

I'll never root for the Buffs to lose... But I do take some comfort in the fact that each pathetic loss is bringing to light the magnitude of our profoundly incompetent coaching staff, Juicebox in particular.

I'm looking at each of these embarrassing losses as one game closer to us getting a real head coach... Its beginning to look like one of the few positive outcomes we could hope for at this point. :huh:

I disagree on this point. Terminating Hawk today will not give us anymore wins this year. I agree with the premise that making a move charts a clearer course for us. I believe that Bohn does care and I will continue to believe this until I see evidence suggesting otherwise. I can certainly see a possibility for a move being made over the course of the next 3 games (MU, A&M, ISU) assuming 3 straight losses.

I think the thing to keep in mind is that terminating Hawkins is going to be difficult for Bohn partly because he hired him. He also knows that making that decision is going to cost the University a substantial amount of money. He needs to be absolutely sure that he's going to make the right decision. He also needs to think about that cost compared to the cost of keeping Hawkins.

One must also consider the influence of the Chancellor and the difficult financial times the University finds itself in. Where a stadium expansion is still being carried by the general fund (probably a money loser). The same general fund where money might need to come from to payoff yet another fired coach. As well as where adding funds to bring in someone new might come from. At a time when the University is asking the state for more money. These are very tough financial times for boosters as well whose pockets are not nearly as deep as they one were.

Considering all the above Im not positive CU is going to rid itself of Hawkins as I once was. The decline in ticket sales might actually be cheaper than paying off both coaches and hiring a 3rd.

Politics would be the only reason. If Benson thinks it will hurt his negotiating position with the State for project funding, Hawkins may keep his job in spite of everything. It doesn't matter whether the buyout money comes out of a different pool than Benson's talking to the State about, it's a potential PR issue that could lose the public opinion battle for him.

It could also come down that Bohn wants to fire Hawk, but is told he has to keep him by DiStephano and/or Benson for whatever reason. Benson is not going to get any money from the state. They had a brain storming session at the capital last week where had a very tepid response. There will be no raising tuition which the Governor will veto any plan including that. The State of Colorado is essentially broke.

University of Colorado President Bruce Benson was more subdued after the meeting, saying the ad hoc group came up some suggestions, but no new ways to create more revenue. He said the tougher issues, such as eliminating duplicate programs and giving the Colorado Commission on Higher Education more control over funding, will take more time.

"It's efficiencies, there's no real money there. It's a start, and you have to start somewhere," Benson said.

The proposals immediately ran into a conflict when Rico Munn, the governor's new director of the Colorado Department of Higher Education, told college leaders Gov. Bill Ritter will veto any bill that provides tuition flexibility.

University of Northern Colorado President Kay Norton told colleagues that colleges and universities are different from other state agencies because they have their own boards and she believes they should be able to set their own policies. She said that should include setting tuition so institutions can maximize use of state and federal funds.

Ritter is being forced by state law to cut $560 million from this fiscal year's budget, which ends June 30. Over this fiscal year and the next, lawmakers will see the state General Fund budget slashed from $7.5 billion to $6.2 billion.

Munn said the budget crisis will get worse when federal stimulus funds end next year.

"We essentially have a date certain out there when we hit that cliff and the federal funds go away," Munn said.

i can't root for losses. but, i am suffering from severe fan-fatigue. being a fan of this dog**** program is wearing me down.

we've got coaches who'd get run out of a pop warner league. we've got administrators who apparently are content to watch the program fail just so they do it with good citizens who get good grades.

if they don't pull the trigger on this staff at the end of this year, i am pretty much done. they won't get another dollar from me until they get some folks in who actually give a **** about winning again. sacrificing a couple of assistants isn't going to fix anything. if this staff is retained, then i am done until both the staff and this athletic director are gone.

why should i commit any money to an endeavor that is absolutely destined to fail? if they won't commit to win, i won't commit to donate.

i'll still root for them, but i am not going to keep fooling myself into believing there is hope when there is none. the enterprise has failed. period. without a new staff, the failure will continue and will accelerate until there is nothing left but distant memories. maybe that is the goal for some?

i am not investing any more money or emotion in this.

Im starting to come around to the idea that it might not actually happen because of the finances around here these days. Sacky contends they have cash stuffed away and given the fact that the states gap widens after the Obama stimulus ends CU is probably hedging for the future. Therefore it could be cheaper to keep Dan.

In the 70s and 80s my dad used to tell UF everytime they called for money (non athletic donations) they had to fix football before he'd give another penny. That included putting The U back on the schedule again. :lol:

I think those things have some merrit because those caller takers will give feedback as to why they cant get money out of people.

In truth I don't think raising tuition would solve much. Some kids could pay it. Others would withdraw and transfer or skip a year. I cant imagine they could bump it up 8 or 9% and expect full participation from their customers.

What would make sense is letting more out of state students $$$ in.

I'll still give money, and i think you should too. Just make it conditional on an outcome. I told Bohn I'd give him X for every game Hawkins lost if it was used to buy him out at the end of the year.

It's sad to say but becoming bowl eligible might be the worst thing ever for us. Guarantees another year or even two of Hawkins...AND on top of that, the AD would never up Hawkins contact so no decent recruit is going to come here not knowing who their coach is going to be in two years. Then we are left with the same old "the cupboard was empty" scenario for the next 4 years. SUCKS!

actually you guys are headed in a different direction becuase of tabor that will limit your governments ability to function in much the same way as Prop 13 and the 2/3rds majority does here. You cant legislate funding for stuff in the face of an amendment that restricts revenue.

Troo enuf I suppose. However TABOR seems to function pretty well at keeping debt in check. California cant say the same.
