These two put together very solid seasons:

Scotty McKnight - 76 catches, 893 yards, 6 TDs, 11.75 yards per catch

Markques Simas - 43 catches, 585 yards, 3 TDs, 13.60 yards per catch

But, more importantly, in the last 4 games:

Scott McKnight - 26 catches, 358 yards, 3 TDs, 13.77 yards per catch

Markques Simas - 31 catches, 463 yards, 2 TDs, 14.95 yards per catch


The pace these two set in their last 4 games would put them both above 1,000 yards.


Also, nice to see Rodney Stewart put together a solid season:

198 carries, 804 yards, 4.04 yards per carry, 9 TDs
 
Think we finally have a legit receiver corps for a change. McKnight and Simas are a nice duo. If we can just find a true burner to add to the mix, I think we would be set.

As far as Stewart, I think he was decent this season, but I cannot help feeling that something seemed off the second half of the season. He did not seem nearly as decisive, there seemed to be a lot more dancing in the backfield.

Agreed on Stewart. He was trying to do too much and tried to bounce things outside too often. He looked much better yesterday and it was great to see him get back on track. Calhoun had that same problem before he transferred. Many of us criticized the guy for it, but realized much of it had to do with the blocking when he went to Wisconsin and tore it up. With better blocking yesterday, Stewart wasn't so indecisive.

Hopefully Clemons or Simmons can add that 3rd piece in our passing game.
 
Good points. I agree that poor blocking had a lot do with Stewart's struggles, hopefully yesterday was a sign of things to come. One thing that needs to change in general for our RBs next year is to disguise screens better. It does not seem like we fool anyone on screen plays.

Simmons or Clemons are the logical guys to fill the speed void. We need to find a way to get them on the field next season. We will not necessarily have the options at TE to open up the middle of the field that we did this season, so it might make sense to use taller WRs to help offset the losses of Geer and Devenney.
 
Looking solid for next year. Would like to add a deep speed guy,but with clemons,jefferson,wright,and hopefully simmons,we'll have the depth too.
 
these 2 were our best wr combo in years. with the guys to be added next year, on paper, this unit should be good.

i agree that it helped when they went with a qb who could deliver more passes around the field.
 
I think we'll be able to pass the ball pretty well next season. I'm excited to see what Darden and Ussery bring, their size, especially Darden's, could be very useful in the red zone.

Agreed. The offense should be a seven to eight win offense next year. The question is whether the defense is a seven to eight win defense, or a three to four win defense.

No. The question is if this is a seven or eight win coaching staff or a three to four win coaching staff.

Truth is that despite all the failures he has had here Hawk did win a lot of games at Boise and even though he had a different set of assistants and a system in place when he took over, he was the man in charge.

All we can hope for at this point is that he goes completely out of character and takes a good hard, honest look at the job HE is doing and fix the things HE is doing.

If he does, we have the talent to compete with virtually everyone on our schedule. We have some holes but so do almost everyone else we play. That is the saddest thing about this situation, we have a coach who has won before and quality players and we are losing to teams we have no business losing to. That is not about the players, it is about the coaching and the coaching comes back to the man in charge, Hawk.
 
Does it seem like Simas needs to make better y.a.c. Plays? Put a move on somebody for the love of god. Love him and look forward to seeing more, but just an observation. He had a give up yesterday that could have gone for at least 3 or 4 more and then a second catch that should have been followed by a juke

It seems after the catch he's tentative and is a straight line runner. His long catch should have gone for a TD.

Doesn't matter though because the guy has monster hands. I would love more YAC, but how many long passing plays did he have this year? 3 100 yard games. Guy is a beast. Expectations are big for him.
 
Next season, I want our base set to be 3 WR + 1 TE.

Looking at our personnel, there's no reason to even consider something else. Get Simas and Clemons on the outside with Scotty working the slot routes and Deehan playing the TE/H-Back roll for us. We are going to put up a lot of points if we do this.

And, frankly, with our lack of depth and experience at TE we should consider moving Solder to TE in goal line and short yardage situations so we can bring in an extra OT. We've got to get our best players on the field instead of being married to a standard depth chart within a system.

Agreed and I don't mean to question him, he is good, gonna be great. Just wondering if I was the only one that saw it

Agreed. I think there really is no way around it. Hell I might get a lot of hate for this, but a base set of shotgun might be the best for us. It would give us the 3 WRs or more on the field as well as the zone read option play. I also think Speedy would do quite well running out of this formation.

Thinking about it though, there really isn't any question that we are going to do something at least similar to this. We don't even have a FB anymore, so the I formation is out, with that goes the strong and weak I. Basically that leaves us with shotgun/singleback and we aren't filled with TEs, so we find ourselves with a lot of WRs likely on the field. All I know is, Simas and McKnight are our best 2 offensive players, Clemons from all reports will be a playmaker, so we need those 3 out there at all times. Maybe Simmons or Jefferson or one of the redshirt freshmen will step up and we can go to some 4 WR sets.

You should not get much hate at all for that idea. Running the shotgun with Tyler Hansen is a helluva lot different than what we ran with Cody Hawkins. When teams figure out the QB has no mobility whatsoever, that offense stalls.

I can see it now. Scotty and Ebner on the outside and Espy in the slot. Sumler at TB and two walk-ons in the O-line.

In all seriousness, I believe Espy can be effective in the slot. Running underneath option routes against a safety, linebacker or a team's 3rd best corner is something a small, quick guy like him could really excel at.

I also like Jefferson in that slot role.

Give me the bigger receivers on the outside. Simas, Clemons, Simmons, Ussery, Darden, and yes, even Ebner.
 
I'd really like to see less personnel groupings or whatever that crap is next season in favor of traditional depth charts.

2 Outside WRs: Simas and Clemons, backed up by Simmons, Darden, Ussery and Darden.

Slot WR: McKnight backed up by Jefferson, Espy and maybe Lockridge, although he should probably be the 2nd RB next season behind Speedy.

It's really that simple imo. We don't need 18 different formations with 49 personnel groupings. Practice those players at those positions and perfect things. We don't need Espy and the slot WRs to know the routes for all 3 positions, we need them to know how to be the slot WR.
 
What happened to the power running game? :rolleyes:

3WR set with a te and speedy in the backfield. With Hansen running the show, they could do a variety of things,including some option packages.

We no longer have a power running back. Not saying Scott was one, but he was who we expected to be one.
 
Not that it matters coming from me...but I don't think Hansen is your answer. He seems very uneasy in the pocket and looks for a reason to scramble. Broken plays like that can cause a few big plays but it is not a way to sustain many drives.

Your WR crew would be better served with a guy that will step up into the pocket it would appear.

What is up with the OL? Is it bad coaching? Your line looked massive up close but just seemed like it couldn't move the pile. I couldn't tell if they were all too tall to get proper leverage in the run game or what exactly the issue was.

Interesting observation on Hansen. I'm no coach, but he runs through his checks quickly, if at all. He does rely on his scrambling, but that's somewhat related to our seive of an offensive line. He seems to have a knack for making throws on the run, and when faced with nebraska's D-line, I can't really blaming him for abandoning the pocket early.

The Offensive line is still pretty young and is plagued by a rapid and repeated coaching turnover. They are massive, they are athletic, and sadly they don't seem to be playing up to their talent level.
