Yea, they definitely have their differences. Kelly coaching and winning in a BCS conference is another one. But, still, it's interesting to see other teams sitting in a similar situation to what we were sitting in 2 and 4 years ago.

near as i can tell, Sherman gets that job because he was an assistant when ATM was the top dog in the very mediocre SWC of the 90's (their top 5 team comes to Boulder and we beat them soundly in 95 or 97, we never lost to UT in that time either)...and had ties to Jackie (the probation machine) Sherrill and RC Slocum.

that's pretty slim, sad nostalgia criteria to me. hopefully, we don't go that route in the year(s) to come. you have to go hire the best available guy....not back to the past. Hawk looks like a whiff of the highest order....but it was the right logic.

true. given ATM's usual pansy OOC (except the one that got Fran fired when they played Clemson and Miami, i think)....they've got at least 3 guaranteed W's even with their usual head-scratcher loss to Arkansas State or someone. so, you have a 8 game season to win 4 more.

i like ATM's RB's Cyrus Gray and C. Michael....and obviously the Johnson QB kid has talent and upside. i don't see them being as dreadful on D since DC Joe Kines has been good everywhere he's been. special teams, that beat them last night and against Texas (late KO return for a UT score with the Ags have the momentum)....says iffy coaching to me.

Is there a particular point here? I think looking at different people and then project how someone else is going to do is a thin stretch at best. I think you are selective in the similarities. Sherman's resume is totally different than Hawkins.

Kelly is a totally different personality than Hawkins, Hawkins believes in a low emotional approach and Kelly is from the Woody Hayes school of football on the emotional level. Kelly has coached (successfully ) at the BCS level, Hawkins had no BCS experience before CU.

Kelly has won the Big East twice and qualified for BCS bowls when he was hired at ND. Hawk hadn't beaten two BCS conference teams when he was hired at CU.

i'm no big fan of the Big East (or ACC for that matter) but the BE is better than the WAC. given the last two years bowl results and BYU and TCU beating OU recently, if the MWC was east of the Mississippi....the ESPN wonks would be slurping high on the success.

I think on paper Hawk was the right hire but Kelly is much more qualified, IMO.

Although I have thought hiring Mike Sherman was not the best for A&M, he has been recruiting well. CU fans like to use the youth excuse but A&M had the most players on the Freshman All-Big 12 team...several of them true freshmen.

We can knock their OOC schedule but on the other hand they have to play in the Big 12 South which in my mind negates the one or two easy teams in the OOC.
