LAKEWOOD — It was a difficult week for the Columbine football team, which dealt with the sort of adversity no squad wants to encounter during the postseason.
With eight players, including four offensive regulars, getting suspended this week for attending an underage party where alcohol was present, it was the perfect time for one of the Rebels’ senior leaders to take charge and help fill some of the void.
Zane Norris played that role Saturday against Arvada West.
Norris is a linebacker by trade who doubles as a part-time fullback who rarely touches that ball, but that changed against the Wildcats. Norris picked up some of the slack the suspensions left in the Rebels’ backfield by rushing for 126 yards and scoring three touchdowns in helping lead Columbine to a 28-7 victory in a Class 5A second-round playoff game at Jeffco Stadium.
“Zane has been one of our best players all year. He’s a great linebacker and a tough kid,” Columbine coach Andy Lowry said. “He’s got ice on his shoulders every single week after a game. He’s just a warrior and a tough kid. I had all the confidence in the world he’d be ready to step up, and he might be our best back. It’s just better when kids don’t have to play both ways.”
Norris and quarterback Danny Spond, who missed the first-round win against Fruita-Monument last week because of an injured throwing shoulder, helped lead the Rebels to a 355-yard effort on the ground. Spond rushed for a game-best 134 yards and showed no lingering effects from his injury, completing 5-of-7 passes for 70 yards, including a 12-yard touchdown to Norris in the fourth quarter.
“We kind of had some adversity this week, but we’re a family and we all stick together,” Spond said. “If some guys go down, other guys have to step up and fill in for them. When you get your chance, you have to take advantage of it.”
