10th Assistant - who would you want?

I think we can safely assume it's going to be a 2nd DB Coach, giving the staff 5 assistants each on offense and defense.

Some chatter that Nate Taye might get it as an internal promotion (he's been on staff for 5 years and came with HCMM from San Jose State).

Do you want Taye, or for CU to look outside?

Going outside the program, who do you like?

Taye would be my guess, but I'm more concerned with getting rid of some of the dead weight that is currently on staff right now (Brian Lindgren, Gary Bernardi, Jim Jeffcoat........maybe Klayton Adams) than who fills this spot.

I think Taye is a good choice, I think Tony White at SDSU would be a good choice (if he would take it), and if he's not kept, I think Cory Hall would be sweet.

How about CU gets a guy who can recruit the defensive front 7? Pretty sure CU has an opening for that.

Now that UCLA's replacing Mora, that should mean that staff doesn't get retained.

If we want to go big with the 2nd DB coach and get one of the most established recruiters there is for Inland Empire/ Valley/ San Bernardino... Demetrice Martin is the guy. Looks like from his UCLA bio that he also covers Houston some for them and has coaching history at Pasadena City College & Mt. Sac to be a lot of help with the CA JUCOs.

Have there been whispers around the burrito stand that would lead us to believe they really will hire a 10th coach?

Maybe the decade of futility is clouding my spirits, but it may not be unreasonable to think the department delays this for (potential assistant changes)(fiscal prudence)(other) - any number of (lame) reasons.

Of course they're hiring a 10th assistant. Your "Decade of Futility PTSD" runs deep, my friend. :)

I think it is worth noting that the budget still matters though. Aside from performance, Bernardi also has a bloated salary, which could be used for his replacement and the 10th assistant (or at least most of the two salaries).

Yep.

Here's how I'm looking at it with how I think it will break (and I know you don't like the Chev move in this):

Jeffcoat - $269k
Bernardi - $311k
Lindgren - $487k

That's a pool of $1,067,000. Let's assume cost-of-living level bumps and put it at $1,100,000 for easier math.

Assume that Chev gets promoted to full OC and is paid less than Eliot. Eliot's at $700k. Let's assume Chev goes from his current $375k to $550k.

That puts us at $925k to hire a DL Coach, an Inside Receivers Coach, a QB Coach and a DB Coach.

For perspective, Ross Els made $225k and Klayton Adams made $315k this year while the lowest salaries on staff are Darian Hagan at $183k and Shadon Brown at $200k. We can hire the 4 positions in that range with a budget of $925.

DB Coach - hire a young recruiter type for $200k
IR Coach - hire a young recruiter type for $200k
QB Coach - hire a successful guy from a lower level at $225k
DL Coach - hire a more established guy as the "big get" for this year at $300k

The budget is definitely there to upgrade while allowing RG to apply any extra cash from this year's increased ticket revenue to retaining coaches and putting together a "rainy day fund" in the event that any long-term contracts need to be bought out in the future.
