'12 TX DE Victor Irokansi (Signed to Oklahoma State)

We need our make or break season to hurry up and start so wins + a look at the depth chart will do some swaying. Plus official visits in late September are the clincher if the team is surging.

I feel that. Super nervous about the Hawaii. I hope we are psyched and they are caught off guard. We'll have a great presence though. Starting the season well is gonna be huge.

BTW, awesome name. I hope we get to see it on a Buff Jersey.

Same thing as Kough it seems. We're simply their best offer right now so they're going to commit until something better comes along. Which is fine with me, but we should be looking to find better players too.
I'm with you, I was trying to preempt doom and gloom if he de-commits.

Ok State now.

Not surprised if true, also not heartbroken. If he ends up at CU I will welcome him but he is certainly not the kind of recruit who makes or breaks a class. Hopefully we are in on some better DEs.

I agree, some very good ones still out there.

Heeeeeey Victor, why did you leave our team?

Don't use the Bigbang logic here, just because there are good players left doesn't mean that were going to get them; the two Hawaii DE's for example are no longer considering us. Maybe Ironkansi isin't a great player but I wouldn't assume that we'll just end up getting someone better, I was very happy to have him. Hopefully we still get an official visit.

With this kid's limp wristed commitment a few weeks back, where he could even answer about his own word straight, i would have rescinded it on the spot. No surprise the kid flips about a week or two later.

This kid was already playing behind Juda Parker and Nembot in my eyes, and that wouldn't have changed any time soon. The kid is a project and could have contributed by his junior year but not really anything to weep over. Better to eliminate kids like this early as they'll always be looking around. I doubt OSU is his final stop either.

Found this funny....

Oklahoma State is big time football. They have all the support in the world, they've got great fans up there, the best facilities in the Big 12 and all that, so I decided to go there instead of Colorado."

Since when is having a losing record, four 10 win seasons, zero national titles, being in a dieing conference and could easily be playing in the C-USA in a few years, and zero conference titles since 1976 big time football? Oh well not too surprised. This quote pretty much said he was holding a spot until something better came along:

As far as other schools go, even though you commit, schools will always try to recruit you," Irokansi said. "As of right now, out of the offers I have right now, I'm 100 percent committed to Colorado. It's life though. Something may pop up and I might take an official to Colorado and I might take an official somewhere else, and I may find out I like somewhere else better.

Best of luck to him but I won't be sweating this one.

Not a big loss, but I'm not sure we are in good shape for many other DEs.

Really depends if we're shifting to a 3-4 or not. If we do, then DTs like Pericak and Hennington play DE. What we really need in that case is NTs and OLBs.

It seems like this year's team would be perfectly setup to make that transition to the 3-4. We're deep at DT, shallow at DE but have a few OLB's who could bump down and play on the LOS. I also think Rippy & Webb would be ideal sitting in the middle of this defense along with Nobriga/Daigh. I could see our front seven shaking out like this.

NT - Cunningham/Richter/Bonsu - shorter, stocky guys, can hold the point take up blocks.
DT/DE's - Pericek/Obi/Kasa/Nembot/ Poston, a few other upper classmen like Poremba, etc. A little taller, have weight to hold the point, yet length to stretch out plays.
OLB - Major, Hartigan, Parker, Chidera - They need athletic ability, ability to close quickly, and natural pass rushing ability. I think all of these guys have that.
MLB - Webb, Rippy, Daigh, Nobriga - Two down run stuffers fit the bill here but need to have awareness when they drop in their zones.

I won't break down the secondary but I wish we would hurry up and move towards this type of defense.

These two guys are right at the top of my wish list at DE: Kaumatule, Buckner

Bookends like McGhee and Williams

I've seen the 3-4 switch mentioned a few times on this board. Is this something that has been put out there by the coaches already or is it silent speculation by a lot of people? Just curious because the switch makes sense, I just haven't seen anything "official" on it.

True, although we are not exactly in great shape with OLBs either.

Coaches haven't said anything. It's just that when you follow recruiting closely it's apparent that we are recruiting a lot of DE/OLB tweeners (LBs - inside or out in a 3-4), a lot of LB/S tweeners (rover position when you go to a nickel / 3-3-5 stack out of that base), tall DTs/oversized DEs like Nembot (prototype 3-4 DE) and huge DTs such as Solis and some of the other offers (NT in 3-4). Plus there have been moves such as switching the strongest guy on the team, Richter, to DT from his guard position. He's certainly not a 4-3 shoot the gap DT, but he can anchor at NT in a 3-4.

Maybe we're not making this move, but a lot of decisions make more sense if we are. Chief among them is hiring Kanavis McGhee as a DL coach when we already had Tui on board. If he's coaching 3-4 OLBs that sometimes play with their hand down and sometimes play in space, he brings a lot to the party with specific expertise there that Cabral and Tui don't have. Also, Brown as a DC would seem to be a similar guy to Dick LeBeau who has been orchestrating that Steelers 3-4 zone blitzing scheme for years (elite DB coach who is very creative in the Xs and Os department).

Bottom line: no announcement or suggestion that this is the direction from any of the interviews, but a lot of us just don't get some of the moves if we're not going that way.

Reading the media day packet it stated pretty clearly.

Defense Depth Chart (4-3 base). So it would not seem like we are going to go there just yet.

Yeah. I don't expect it this year. The 3-4 DE and OLB techniques takes a while to learn. Plus, one of our most effective DLs is Cunningham and he has to be in a 4-3 at his size. He can't anchor at NT in a 3-4 and he doesn't have the length to play 3-4 DE. We also don't have enough linebackers to do it. I think our base will be very similar to what we have been running. Frankly, that's a hybrid of a 4-3 and a 3-4 anyway. We have a NT, a DT, a big DE like a Kasa and then a OLB/DE pass rush specialist where we have used Beatty and Hartigan. Against passing teams or on passing downs, we bring in that 5th DB we call a nickel corner but it has usually been Rover types or Safeties that we used there last year (Nobriga, Sandersfeld and Orms).

Well, best of luck to him. I can understand a TX kid wanting to play in the Big 12-2, lots of trips to places near home top play. Okie Lite has Boone, and that's about it. Never once in the CCG, and now lined up for annual butt kickings from UT and OU. The Alamo Bowl is the pinnacle of their CFB achievement and the best they can hope for....but their coach is a man, so they have that going for them.

And Stillwater? Ugh. I once thought that there are worse places in the US. Ever been to Wendover, Nevada? That place is located deep within God's hairy ass. But, I will take it over any location in OK (or Nebraska, if anyone is asking).

Poor kid.  Oh well.  Big Daddy Pickens has built some pretty impressive facilities.  I work with a lady who's bro is a proffessor there.  The faculty was really pissed when T. Boone gave all that money to the AD.  At least thats what she said.

Edit: WTF is that " " ****?

I actually kind of liked Stillwater when I was there, if for no other reason than the chili cheese fries at Eskimo Joe's. I'd take it over anywhere in Nebraska for sure.
