Good pickup. Guy has good size and will help with depth. Will be interesting to see if he ends up a DT or DE
fifyNow we just need a TE and a few good LBs
Yeah, with all of these numbers something has to be up other than your usual depth needs. Looks like he will be playing the DT position. With a lot of the guys that have been brought in (particularly the JUCOs (Carrell, Robbins, Jackson), it really looks like the coaches very much want a flexible DL. Or maybe they're looking to move toward a Tampa-2 defensive tackle concept of having quicker guys shooting gaps for penetration instead of occupying blockers.
for us idiots that went to cu could you expand on what the tampa-2 concept is all about? is it a 3 or 4 man front, a bunch of smaller guys going for speed? With a lot of the guys that have been brought in (particularly the JUCOs (Carrell, Robbins, Jackson), it really looks like the coaches very much want a flexible DL. I think the name originates from the position of the safeties, who line up at/around the hash and cover the 2 deep zones. Typically, the mlb takes a very deep drop on passing plays since the way to attack the defense is with a deep vertical pass in the middle (tight end, if their speed is sufficient).
We need some linebackers to run a Tampa 2 scheme no?haha
It was the Dungy defense at Tampa Bay (but really started by Chuck Noll in the 70s).
As far as the DTs, you'll have one in a "1" technique and one in a "3" technique. The guy in the "1" plays the C/G gap and tries to blow up the 2 blockers while the "3" is outside shoulder of the G and is charged with shooting the gap.
Both DEs hold the outside shoulder of the OT in 6/7 technique. You try to get your bigger DE on the side with the TE and your better pass rusher on the other side.
A big difference with Tampa-2 DL play is that everyone is pretty much shooting gaps and disrupting things in the backfield. Speed & quickness are more important than size.
I actually wonder if the whole defense is going this direction. HCMM seems to favor man coverage in the secondary, but he also seems to be recruiting corners who are more suited to playing press coverage and then dropping into zone. Maybe we'll see more zone next year. We'd definitely force more turnovers than we do playing man. It's also better for run support when QBs take off since the DBs are facing the QB instead of running with receivers.
