Can we put this bull**** theory that if a guy doesn't play for a 5A school he isn't worth recruiting? It always annoys me and I usually just ignore it, but it has hit critical mass in this thread. Here are some guys off the top of my head who have been serious contributors in the NFL in the past 10 years from 3A and smaller schools in Colorado...
Nate Solder from 1A Buena Vista (we all know what he's accomplished)
Ryan Jenson from 3A Fort Morgan, starting center for Tampa Bay.
Joel Dreessen from 3A Fort Morgan, contributed for both Texans and Broncos, with a solid 2012 season when he started.
Mitch Unrein from 2A Eaton, contributed for the Broncos and Bears.
Austin Ekeler from 2A Eaton, having a good year for the Chargers and looks like he'll have a good career as a 3rd down back.
And not in NFL yet, but Dalton Risner from 1A Wiggins, projected as a top 10 pick this year.
Yeah, the average talent level is less in lower classifications. Yeah, their stats can be elevated from it. But that doesn't lower the ceiling of what kind of players these schools can produce. They take more elaborate analysis and you probably want to get them to a camp to see them compete against higher level opponents, but suggesting Evans is a miss just because he's in 3A is irresponsible and makes you look like a smug douche. Not any old slapdick gets invited to the elite 11. Not any old slapdick has an NFL career.
Being ok with Ty leaving because you trust MT might have another plan? Ok. Being ok because you don't think he'll fit our scheme? Understandable. But sour grapes and throwing out classification, especially in a recruit thread, makes you a dildo.
Iron,
You make some good points (except for the dildo part).
The guys you mentioned are all great players from small schools in Colorado. The problem is that none of them are quarterbacks. The streets are littered with Colorado QB’s (From all classifications) who were highly recruited to big time schools who got eaten alive at the D1 level.
McCaffery, Strait, Del Rio, Berglund, Elway, Ochs, Miles, Sokoloski, Sturm, are all names that come to mind. These are Colorado HS All-stars who just couldn’t make it at the next level.
I can only think of two: Colter and Tony Lindsay that were Colorado QB’s who excelled at the D1 level. I’m sure there were others but the list is not long.
The truth is that Colorado HS football does not historically produce a lot of “big time” QB talent. Less likely still would be that talent from a 3a school. That doesn’t mean it won’t happen someday but it would be against the odds.
Having said that, best of luck to the kid!
