Football seasons tend to come down to three things, talent, scheme, and attitude.
We have seen enough cases in the last five years where teams with significantly inferior talent to the Buffs won or almost won because of scheme and more importantly attitude.
The schemes are going to be better, the players will understand what is expected and how to do it, the players most capable of performing the schemes will be the ones on the field. Our coaches will have to be much better at adapting to what other teams are doing both in game planning and making in game adjustments, it would be hard to be worse than we have seen from the last staff.
What is going to cause problems is talent. Bringing in talent and developing talent is going to take time. While we have some good individual players and some interesting young guys but this element will take some time. We are not on a lot of kids radar after five years of futility, bad relations between CU and the HS coaches, and a number of guys on the new staff that will have to build those relationships and awareness from point zero. There will be some games this year where we can have a great game plan and a well prepared team with great attitude and still lose. We will get beat on talent.
At the same time we have seen often enough to the right attitude can do amazing things. It looks like the players are starting to believe, the last few years they haven't. Just like we got beat by less talented teams that had better attitudes I am believing that we can win some games against more talented teams because we have a better attitude.
The turn around for this team isn't that hard to figure out. Win the games we should so we don't take steps backwards and some we probably shouldn't based on talent and you start to build momentum.
At the very minimum I think this team is going to go into every game ready to play to their ability and give themselves a chance to win. Haven't been able to say that for awhile.
