2 scrimmages on Saturday and the Lambs are in trouble

Both CU and CSU had open scrimmages on Saturday. After reading every review I could find, the Lambs are in trouble come RMS.

CSU's #1 and #2 offense both opened the day with a 75 yard TD drive. Michael Gallup was unstoppable (156 yards in limited time) a true Frosh WR was impressive with 5,6 catches but also had a fumble and the star of their defense was a true freshman DT who was All County last year in Georgia and was "unblockable" according to Bobo.

So if CSU's one Biletinkoff Award list member was unstoppable, how will CU's TWO Biletnikoff List members do against the Lambs mediocre secondary? CU basically returns the entire offense (with a more dynamic player at QB) that was up 31-0 at half time last year and CSU is excited by some true freshman DB's and a DT who will be playing ?

While CU is reloading on Defense, the biggest difference is that the new guys stepping in for CU are not 18 year old freshman but players who have been in the system at least a year or two or jucos who have been in Boulder since January (with the exception of depth at LB).

During CU's scrimmage I saw a couple comments about how the LB's were making a lot of tackles but not sure how the Dline did. Folks, in a 3-4, the Dline's job is to hold the LOS freeing up the LB's to make plays. CU's Dline has size and depth. We will roll 2,3 deep across the Dline this year and when the next man comes in, he'll be another 300# big fella who is fresh. CSU is still trying to find a 5th Dlineman to count on.

So while I appreciate CSU has a strong offense and will put some more points on the board, their defense will not be much better leading to a Buffs win by 17 or more.

One last comment. CSU's stadium is very well done and a huge improvement. But it's built using oompa loompa sizes. They crow that it's P5 and Big10 ready. Really? 15K seats less than smaller P5 stadiums and 40-50K short on seats for a typical B10 team. They had 21K at the scrimmage. Good job Ram Fans. But they kept saying how the stadium was packed. That's because 21K in an oompa loompa's house does look packed. Anywhere else and not so much.

Go Buffs!

Re-tool the entire Dline and they were able to stop the #1 offense on the goal line.

Love the confidence.

I expect that CSU will be putting up a bunch of points through out the year. I also expect them to put up a fair amount of points on us in game one as our Defense gets its game legs under it.

Still expect CU to put up more points though. Our offense has the potential to be so damn good.

We have DL depth? That is great to know.
I just see a lot of average in that room right now. I don't really see a big dropoff between the guys starting and guys like Franke, Umu, Malumba. I am more worried about injuries hitting at ILB and OLB/defensive end.

Unblockable:

H/T @TDforTD

The interesting things I read on their scrimmage:
Passing
Nick Stevens completed 10-of-15 passes for 224 yards 2 TDs 1 INT
Collin Hill accounted for 193 yards on 10-of-24 passing 1 INT

Top 2 QB's go 20-39 for 417 yds, 2 TD 2 INT

Rushing
Dalyn Dawkins 6 carries for 48 yards and a TD
Rashaad Boddie 15 carries for 38 yards and 2 TDs

21 carries 86 yards 3 TDs

Receiving
Michael Gallup had 6 catches for 197 yards and 2 TDs

And the unblock-able award goes to:

"Ellison Hubbard, they couldn't block him all day," Bobo said. "He was in the backfield all day and they could not block him. He made a lot of plays and had the opportunity to make a lot more. He's a guy that has a chance to be a very good player for us."

He isn't in the video above as he is #98

So there was a DL in the backfield all scrimmage and the O still got 417+ yds? Interesting.

I think you want your D to have the better stats in a scrimmage

Sounds like the offense blew the defense out of the water in all areas, including back up guys. What was it that Mac said over the weekend about one side of the ball dominating the other in scrimmages like that?

Name another CU team in the past 15-20 years that has this kind of D Line size and depth?

Three years ago, Eddie Lopez played 125 snaps on the Dline as a true freshman. He is now a TE. I'm not saying we're able to stop stone cold USC or UW, but yes, we have legit size and depth on the D line.

When you can have Eddie go to Offense....then the D line must be just fine

So because you can name a bunch of the players, that automatically means we have depth.

Lopez has been a complete non-factor for the last two seasons, so why is he relevant to this conversation?

??? The relevance is that the depth chart doesn't include a present-day Lopez or any player who could be compared to Lopez as a freshman. @BuffDad2020 is saying that Sami is greyshirting, not playing 100 snaps at DT.

I suspect you knew all that and are just being particularly dickish in argument today.

The majority of the snaps on the D Line last year are gone with graduation. Freshmen will not get snaps, but the so-called depth across the line is a largely unknown quality. That doesn't mean it will be bad, but saying CU has depth implies a degree of confidence that shouldn't be there just yet.

If Lopez at stayed at DL, he would be part of the allsome "depth," yet he has not been any sort of quality depth ever (even during that freshman season).

Better load up on the popcorn and soda for this game.

I'm planning on catching a game at their new stadium this year with some friends at CSU. I will probably just borrow a CSU and wear it. I don't get the people that will wear a CU shirt to a CSU vs. Boise State game, or a CSU shirt at a CU vs. Utah game.

My statement about having confidence in the D line and it's depth comes from Jim Jeffcoat. While in line at DFW earlier this year, Jeffcoat was waiting for the same flight. Didn't turn into a jock sniffer but asked how he felt about this year's line. His answer was immediate, direct and filled with confidence. "I really like my group. We have good size, good skills and if the guys keep working, we'll have a very good line."

Call me a homer (I am) but Jeffcoat is a decent gauge of our D line in my mind. And seeing how our pathetic d line held the #1 and #2 offense out of the end zone on goal line drills Saturday, then clearly we'll be the sieve up front like we were 6-7 years ago.
