2010 CU DEFENSE, what can we expect?

Looking at this defense, it seems to be more experienced but lacking depth in some area's. They must improve and can't have games like Toledo again.

DL- More experience and this is one year where this isn't a big concern. We have DE'S in Herrod, Kasa and West who can get the job done. Need another guy to emerge. DT has Pericak, Bonsu and Cunningham. Hopefully Goree and Obi can improve and help out. This unit,especially inside must stop the run much better.

LB's- Beatty,major,sipili,ahles and rippy seem to be the main 5. This unit has potential to be good and this unit unlike years past, hasn't made as many plays. We need this group to be a strong point in 2010, especially vs the run and over the middle, need a couple good pass rushing LB's to emerge. Beatty can be the guy if he's under control.

DB's- Love the starting 4 in Smith, Brown, Perkins and Polk. Need more interceptions from this group. Depth is an issue. Hopefully Olatoye and another can emerge at corner and we need some safety help.

IMHO, this group should be better overall but losing chapelle brown and burney will hurt. If the DL can be consistent in stopping the run and our LB's are active and making plays, I look for a much better defense in 2010.
 
The biggest concern to me is losing coach Brown. I'm not sure why he wasn't promoted to DC last year. Collins should've been gone ofter the Toledo game.

After? Halftime would have been a good start. Your post just brings up the concern, we have talent but do we have coaches who can get the most out of that talent and "improve" these players from freshman to seniors?
 
Concerned about the linebackers and the DBs staying healthy. If the DBs can stay healthy and we can get a consistent rotation out of the LBs, we should finish in the top half of the conference in defense. Overall though, the offense and special teams have to give them more help. We have been killed by so many three and outs along with ****ty field position from poor punting that the defense is getting little to no help.

I agree, we don't need our defense tried and burned out before conference play starts.

Not as confident as you are. The defense lost most of the leading tacklers off last year's squad. Major and Kasa are key. Sipili needs a good year.

If Pissbomber was correct - Brown was running the defense after the Toledo game. That lost could be huge.
 
I really like our DL, if we can get 2 more guys to step up at DE and DT we have a pretty solid rotation. LB worries me quite a bit, but Cabral is still around so I'll have faith. I like the starters at DB, but the depth is pretty awful, any injuries and we're not looking good. Hopefully Brown wasn't the key to the defensive turnaround last season, or if he was Collins better have had his notepad out.
 
I think we will have a difficult time generating much of a pass rush, which puts a ton of pressure on the DBs.
 
IMO, the players are a solid experienced group. The problem lies in their DC. The rumor is Brown and Cabral essentially took over after the Toledo debacle. I don't have a hard time believeing that as the D improved almost overnight to a fairly good unit. Brown is gone, Collins is still here, that is enough to make me concerned, even with the talent on the D side of the ball, which is pretty good if you ask me.

This. Barring injuries, we have a solid above average group of guys. I fully expect our DC to have one bad ass game, and then to **** the bed against at least 3 teams with the rest of the games coming somewhere in the middle. So probably a below average year, thanks to coaching. Again.
 
It all starts up front. We seem to have some talent and depth there for the first time in a long time. The front four need to be solid against the run and generate a pass rush. If they can do that, the rest of the defense becomes much easier. Without that, adjustments have to be made with the linebackers and secondary, which leads to gaps in coverage.
 
Guys, the rumor that Brown (or even Brown and Cabral) took over the defense is/was/remains a myth. That never happened. Period.

Our LB corp looks on paper to be a concern. Reality is though that we often have 2 in the game with BJ lined up as a DE. Major will be huge for us. Rippy was really struggling in the spring and was thinking more than playing. Webb has a chance to play and I think we will see Harrington (Juco). Both those guys can move based on film and seeing Webb in the spring.

I'm pretty sure Cabral will have them ready.

The DBs should be better. Jalil and Jimmy have another year and should be lock-down corners. Chappelle was a great player, but I don't expect fall off from Orms. I expect the safeties to be better. Burney was good in pass coverage, but wasn't physical. I expect we will be physical back there for the first time in awhile.

The defense should be improved. There's some areas where we can't afford injury - but what else is new? It's not as thin as it's been. We have no positions where we are counting on a couple of true freshmen (Bonsu, Kasa and West last year) for example.

How does Major look? Is he as good as advertised?

I remember being really dissappointed when he got injured. Knee injuries are simply a bitch to make a full recovery from.
 
there's no reason csu should score more than 14 points on Sept 4th-
if the defense gives up more than that the Buffs are in trouble
 
I expect a Top 25 defense. Supposedly Talkins and Collins were such geniuses at Boise State so in their 5th and I repeat 5th year at CU its time to show that progress. If it doesn't happen, Bohn needs to do the "right thing" after the season.

I don't know who was calling the defense last year, but I do know the defense was terrible.

11th in the conference in scoring defense
9th in the conference in rushing defense
4th in the conference in passing defense
7th in the conference in total defense
9th in conference in defensive sacks
Worst turnover margin in the conference


All of these need to change, dramatically, if CU wants to have a good year.

And how do you know it did not happen!!! Pi$$bomber was pretty adamant and also pretty connected. I also heard the same thing from 2 other sources right after the Toledo game. Just wondering what your source is?

The rumor about Brown/Cabral is just as believable as Collins pulling his head out his rear end. I have to imagine some things changed after that Toledo debacle. To what extent, I have no idea, but I do not think it is unbelievable that more coaches would have been part of gameplanning after that game.

I think part of the reason for my concern with the LBs is the fact that Beatty is lined up as a DE/OLB most of the time. I am not sure the alignment is working and it is negatively affecting our pass rush. Size is also a concern of mine at LB. Sipili has some size, Rippy has some size, but Harrington and Webb are undersized. I think size has been an issue for a while. I like Cabral, but the talent level/depth is lacking IMO.

The DL should be good, but we are thin there. Can we count on those guys to hold up or are we going to see a small rotation that wears down like Hypolite/Nicholas did a couple years ago?

The DBs also look good, but thin. We'll see how the defense performs, but I see just as many questions as I do answers. That actually provides an accurate description for the whole team.
 
Actually think speed and the lack of it has more to do with our problems than size. If you have speed and quickness you can disrupt a lot of things. CU defense just doesn't make a lot of big plays out there. And that is usually because they dont' have the speed to disrupt plays. Watching the Missouri games the last 3 years clearly shows that.

Then why didn't Hawkins fire Collins and place Brown in charge after the season?

that's sort of my question, indirectly. If indeed Collins was put on the shelf....you'd think he'd have been gonzo on his own accord rather than stick around in a lesser position. but, with the departure of Brown, i guess it's a moot point.
