2014 Utah @ Colorado Basketball Game thread

Tad has recruited very well to bring in guys who will be very good as juniors and seniors. Occasionally some guys who perform early, but it's the exception. What he was trying to do was keep winning and get through 2011-12 and 2012-13 (Pac-12 Title and NCAA at-large bid) so that he could get to this season with Dre as a senior to go along with Spencer at PG before the youth took center stage.

I expect another Tourney appearance in what will be our final "transition" season that was brought on by some unexpected attrition.

Good post Nik. Painful sometimes but this experience should pay off, hopefully as soon as March.

Good to see Talton step up today. Gordon to.

yes the everyone else is doing it retort. Exactly what I would expect from a toddler.

So just to be clear, you are bagging on a guy, who shot 50%, had 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 1 foul because he didn't help the team enough when the team actually won.

I'm not even bagging on Stalzer ... I originally said he didn't "screw up much". Crucify me. He looked better today than he normally does. He's shooting 29%. More turnovers than assists.

As for Hopkins' explosiveness, I guess time will tell if all of you ****ers are right and I'm the asshole ... I know he's young and hopefully will develop. I just don't see the same instincts in him that we saw with Spencer or even Ski as a freshman. And his jump shooting form is brutal. He shoots a set shot. There are numerous freshmen I've seen (can't name them off the top of my head) who are outside the Top 100 who are far more developed. I'm a Buff, I hope I'm wrong. I've been wrong far more times than right.

your post in summation:

As for his explosiveness which I assert is bad - I will cite/discuss a bunch of stuff that has nothing to do with explosiveness that isnt great in his game right now to support my point.

Like I said you had to be a douche about it. Congratulate Talton for his great game, Stalzer for his good game and shut the **** up. You are a big enough idot when we lose you don't need to be one when we win.

The explosiveness thing was a knee jerk comment I made in the first half, and then Quatrro took issue with it. But I stand by it. Not seeing that first step. Finishing is a skill that takes time. But the first step ... You have it or you don't, for the most part.

Ok you are either blind or difficult, you can say a lot of things about my favorite #GameShooter - but saying he isnt explosive is not one of them, now you are just digging your heels in and being stubborn. Don't be an internet douche.

You know it's an amazing play when Josh is making his "O" face in the background.

I thought this board was where we discuss perceived strengths and weaknesses of our team. Not a cheerleading forum. But, you know, I'm clearly way out of sync with this group, so I'll make this my last post.

I love Tad, and hope all these young kids turn into the players he saw when he recruited them. I'm optimistic, and so glad we're relevant in the conference and the country. Go Buffs!

We are hard on people if you want to talk and say something controversial or dumb expect it to get called out, if you want to be able to say what ever regardless of truth: Netbuffs, Rivals, and 247 are good places to start. This is now and always has been the biggest CU basketball board expect to get called out when you take a position that isnt popular or defensible expect to be called out and to be able to do the same to others when they do it. It is how things run around here.

1. We discuss perceived strengths and weaknesses.
2. We are also "cheerleaders" for CU sports.

The two go quite well together.

I actually agree with lots of your points and I feel it painful as well to watch some of the guys playing in the game they are not ready for, like hopkins. I also share your thoughts on Stalzer, I think he is 5-10 minutes backup AT BEST in most other pac12 teams.

But the way you express your thoughts is just way too negative that sometimes I have no idea why you still watch Colorado basketball since you hate it so much. And you apparently watched different buff's games from all of us. Explosiveness, or athleticism, is probably the only good thing we can clearly see from Hopkins for now, and you are saying he is not a PAC 12 level athletes?

i missed this back and forth tonight, but I sat next to Tante at the game today so I take a small part in this satisfaction.

.re: stalzer, you can't kill him for 1 admittedly bad possession when he had 20 great ones. Cherry picking stats/possessions is lazy, you know more about basketball than this to be so naive

Not sure why I'm even jumping into this right now, but JHop sucks large ***** monkey balls right now. Can it be corrected, yes. Should he start? Hell no. Is he explosive? Yes. Is he scared *****less when he's on the court right now, basically making his explosiveness a non factor? Yes. Fact is, he should be 8-9 off the bench for the next few games until he gets his head right.

He had his worst game as a buff, need to stick with him if you believe in what CU is doing. Can't kill the kids' confidence now.

did we ever find out why Jhop didn't see the court in the 2nd half? Tad was very brief about it in the presser after the game and just said, he never got in the flow. Was it just Talton playing well?

Hopkins looked awful from the start. 2 TOs, 2 fouls in the first 3 minutes. Just looked nervous and out of it. Tad pulled him and gave him another shot later on and he still played poorly. Burned his chances and Tad sat him the rest of the way opting for XT and Stalzer the rest of the way.

I'm trying to get the hulk nickname going for XJ.

The guy plays much better when he is pissed off and the hulk had the great tagline. "You wouldn't like me when I'm angry"

yeah wasn't sure if it was all performance based or there was some injury. He definitely had a rough night. Hope he comes back stronger.

A real (predictable) disappointment, was the reaction of "fans" at the keg and here. Just so many people willing to turn on the team, individual players, the coach.
As evidenced during the Embree fiasco, an awful lot of CU "fans" are all about themselves.

Then I hope Boyle is master psychologist. Hopkins starts the game, then sits after the second whistle and never sees the court again (working from memory, but I think I got that right). That's not going to help build confidence: especially when done in front of 9k people and on TV (factors that I believe do impact college kids). Don't get me wrong, to win the game, I believe it was the right move. I'm just saying that restoring a kid's confidence after that won't be easy. But then, I don't know anything about #23's mental character -- maybe he's the type who can shake off a benching and move on; hope so.

You guys are hard on each other (i.e. the CU fan base). As fans, I'm all about holding each other to high standard, but realistically when evaluating CU basketball fans against ACC and B1G fan bases, I think Buff fans represent quite well (toss out Duke and Indiana as outliers), at least in terms of "% of stadium capacity occupied" and the highly subjective "not turning on your team/players/coaches".

I think that 12PM on Saturday is terrible tip time for CU -- there's just too much to do in the Boulder area and interest in outdoor activities is bigger here than anywhere else in the world. If I was the CU Athletic Director, I think I would push hard to avoid Saturday nooners at all costs. Move that game to 8PM and Coloradoans can still get in day's skiing or hiking and then top it off with a hoops game!
