Now that my season is over I'll provide a few of my observations on some of CU's '17 targets that I coached against this season.
Marcus McElroy, RB, Mullen - Watched a lot of film on the kid leading up to our game against Mullen and, defensively, we were very concerned about him. He has the speed to take it 80+ on any given play, and doesn't need a whole lot of room to do it. He's listed at 5'11" 197 on Rivals, but he's definitely bigger than that right now (Max Preps has him at 6'0" 205, which is definitely closer to what I saw on the field). The one knock on him, IMO, is that he just isn't really a tough runner, and goes down at first contact way too often. He doesn't seek out contact and is often looking to bounce it outside instead of taking it up between the tackles where the hole is. This works at the CO high school level, but will not translate in the Pac 12. In our game, specifically, he was a non factor outside of a couple decent runs, but you could see the talent was clearly there. If he can get a tougher mindset when running, he has a chance to be a good one.
Dylan McCaffrey, QB, Valor - He and UNC (Northern CO) WR commit, Ben Waters, are the only two game breakers for Valor's offense this year. I coached against Dylan over the summer at CU's 7v7 camp and I thought he threw the ball pretty well. I didn't see anything special at the time in terms of his arm, but his accuracy and timing were definitely there. After playing Valor in a real game this season, you could definitely see the potential in both his passing and running abilities. He definitely doesn't have Christian's speed or elusiveness (not many do), but he is taller and still runs pretty well. Would definitely bring the DT ability that we desperately need at the QB position. Putting the physical tools aside, Valor runs a very sophisticated offense with an NFL/College sized playbook (no exaggeration). I'm not saying everything is as complex as the college or pro game, obviously, but they run every kind of formation from 5 wide Shotgun to under center, with 3 RBs and 2 TEs. They go unbalanced at times, have a lot of shifts, trades and pre snap motion, and they seem to give him the freedom at the line to make adjustments after seeing the defense. I believe he is the full package at QB that has the potential to be a game changer for CU if they were to convince him to come to Boulder.
Noah Elliss, NT, Valor - Listed at 6'4" 315 lbs... Has offers from TCU, CU, Utah, Utah St. and Washington. Has the potential to be a contributor for CU from day one, IMO. The kid is an absolute monster in the middle and caused so many problems for our traditionally powerhouse running game. We don't have the biggest OL by any means, but he broke through double teams like they were nothing, and short of our guys cutting him, we didn't have an answer. I don't have a whole lot of technical insight into the NT position, but he is pretty athletic for a kid his size and with another year to refine his game, I think CU has to make this kid their top in-state priority for 2017 (along with McCaffrey).
Jake Moretti, OT, Pomona - I don't have technical insight into OL play either, but all I can say is that this kid is a mountain of a 17 year old. He's listed at 6'5" 285 and I would imagine, he'll be up to 300 lbs by the time he steps on campus. He would push for a starting job from day one at CU, but unfortunately, would rather play his college football in Ohio.
