2017 Steven Montez Season (O/U Thread)

You know what? I pulled those numbers out of my ass without thinking. (Don't even think about it!). That would be 3 TD passes and 2/3 of a TD run per game. That isn't going to happen. More like 28 and 6.

Terrible thread name.

After "2017 Steven Montez Season" the next three letters are "O," "U" and "T."

Not a good combination where you're doing a quick scan of topics and threads.

That's good perspective, but I believe the fan perspective includes the fact that the game has never been this wide open and the Buffs have never had this style of offense while having this many weapons. Plus, Montez had 7 TDs in the 3 games he started last year. If he starts 12, that extrapolates to 28. I think it's fair to think that he has improved, the WRs are better than last year and the OL is better than last year.

I agree with that. A solid OL, deep receiving corps, and a schedule full of weak defenses (save USC and UW) means Montez should break the record if he stays healthy.

Over
Under
The OOC games are jokes. He'll only play half in some of those, but he'll still have 10 to 12 by the time conference starts.
Under on the running, since I hope or OC's don't treat him like a battering ram like they did with Sefo.

Tough call on the passes, I'll go over (28)
under on the rushing TD

As comparison, Lamar Jackson won the Heisman last year with 3,500 yards passing, 30 TDs, 9 INTs, and 1,500 yards rushing and 21 TDs. I truly think Montez can come close to the passing stats, but he'll be lucky to have 1/3 of the rushing stats.

29 teams threw for 27 or more touchdowns last year. This is doable. Early in the season, our OCs kept the petal to the metal with the hurry up, and we were something like 6th in the nation on pace. The second half of the season, the coaches really slowed things down after the offense started to struggle & the defense got thinner. If we can keep up the faster pace, I could see 28 happening.

I don't want him to have anywhere close to those rushing stats. I'm hoping for the 250-400 yard range for the season. If he's not running, it means he didn't need to other than picking some spots.

I'm hoping for more passing and less running too, but Lindgren loves him some QB power. Remember all of those times last year when games were out of reach and we were just running the clock, still QB power.

We would all be ecstatic if he put up those kind of passing and rushing numbers because it would most likely mean CU was winning A LOT of games and the program would be getting it's second Heisman winner. Obviously there's zero chance of that happening because he's no where close to the athlete that Jackson is, nor is the offense designed for the QB to be that kind of runner.

I dont mind designed qb runs here and there. That said, hope most of his rushing comes from just scrambling. Get what he can and get down.

One other note on Montez this year: I think it's a big deal that Lindgren spent the offseason designing the offense around Montez's strengths. BL doesn't seem great at adjusting on the fly, but his playbook design and game planning are top notch. That's a big part of the reason, I think, for why Montez played so much better in the games he knew he'd start - BL's game plan was around Montez in those.

Just be Joe Montana this year. Get it in their hands fast and watch them run for 80 yards. We have so much talent at WR I doubt we'll really ever see press coverage. Quick passes and we'll get 5-10 yards a play. Then once you do that 5-10 times they'll start cheating, then crush their souls.

I'd prefer it if he just was Steve Young. He is a running threat, after all. o_O

Why would we change the offense substantially?

Over on passing, under on rushing. I'm really counting on the O-line to finish drives for us in the redzone with Bish or Lindsay (hopefully BL uses RBs instead of Montez or our other QBs). Montez may easily have 4-5 touchdown passes on each of our 2nd and 3rd games by the middle of the 3rd quarter. With 4 passing TDs against CSU, he will need only 13-15 passing TDs in conference games to be over on passing.

Passing: Under
Rushing: over

Something tells me that when we get close to the goal line, he's going to be carrying the ball a lot.
