2018 CU Football Scholarship Roster

Right, dumb question.

I'm guessing the rough yank of scholarships from good, but undertalented kids has happened.
Usually they find another school or they'll do a medical retirement that continues to pay for school but the player no longer participates. It's very rare that anyone is kicked to the curb unless there's a disciplinary issue or he fails out of school.

We've been getting good news on the injury front with regard to depth and potential starters healing ahead of schedule. There was the report from last week with quotes from MacIntyre and Wilson about Moretti being a dog with his training and Lynott being expected ready for fall camp. Yesterday I read MacIntyre saying Maddox is expected to be in the mix for the returner position battle this camp, which means he's recovered from the shoulder. Today was even more good news.

Focus of the piece was on Javy and Mulumba making big strides along with Mustafa being ahead of where our previous JUCO DL recruits were after spring ball. But the following really iced the cake:

Redshirt freshman linebacker Jonathan Van Diest and sophomore tight end Jared Poplawski are both coming back from November knee injuries and doing well. Wilson said he believes both will be ready for fall camp, which starts Aug. 1.

Sounds like JayMac will be good to go this fall. Or at least as good as it can get. More positive news for the scholarship roster heading into fall camp.

"I haven't run a route with no pain since the UNC game," said MacIntyre, who is still recovering from a left foot injury he suffered that day. "It will get there. It's the best it's been since then."

A Lisfranc injury led to a fracture of his fifth metatarsal bone. Told that he probably couldn't do more damage by playing, MacIntyre missed just one game and played through the pain during the final eight weeks. When the injury didn't heal as hoped early in the offseason, he opted for surgery.

"The last couple of months have been the recovery process and now we're kind of ramping it up into doing more on the field," he said. "Hopefully by pretty soon I won't even think about it."

Another Lynott update:

Lynott, who had started 24 consecutive games (20 at right guard, four at center), tore his right Achilles' tendon during the Buffs' 41-30 loss at Arizona State on Nov. 4.

"When I heard it was a long recovery — nine months to be fully feeling like yourself again — it was pretty devastating," he said. "If you work hard at it, it comes back a lot quicker than you think and it's feeling pretty much normal since the fifth month post-op."

A 6-foot-3, 295-pound junior, Lynott has been running since May and he said he's "full go" with weight lifting. He's also been doing individual drills during the Buffs' player-run practices this summer.

Have to imagine, 2 walk on Seniors get the final two right?

That would make sense. They could even give one to a younger walk-on with him knowing it is only for one year then could be used for somebody else.

They are still far enough away from the start of the fall semester though that they don't need to decide right away.

Potentially somebody they really want could get released from another school or be eligible coming out of a JUCO or a grad transfer. No need to rush to fill them at the moment.

Quick update: I moved Kevin George and Derrion Rakestraw from CB to S in order to more accurately portray the depth chart. h/t to Adam.
Interesting. It definitely balances out the defensive backfield numbers. Although I’m not sure it improves the depth at safety.

Wait, adding two bodies to the depth chart that wasn’t there before doesn’t improve depth? Seems counterintuitive. And if it’s coming from Mac, I’d trust it

You’re right. I should have said quality depth. I still think we’re lacking quality depth at safety.

Seems like some of the philosophy has been to recruit big corners, let them battle it out for who can cover a WR on an island, and then the guys who don't make the 2-deep shift over to safety.

It also seems like the coaches are moving away from that and have been recruiting more specifically for safety with guys such as Maddox and Hypolite, among others and the 2019 targets we're seeing.

Good to see. With three coaches for the secondary, no reason not to be signing more ready-made safeties.

I would expect Ray Robinson to be an early contributor.
I had expected that, but I don't know how much the senior year injury set him back on his timeline. I've decided to be patient and have him on more of the Jon Van Diest schedule in my brain. Anything ahead of that would be pennies from heaven to me.

Ray was the first freshman that I thought of when the new redshirt rule passed. I can see him having some playing time towards the end of the season as he will be about 15 months out from his injury.

I think he will be full go come August and had enough exposure to the system and a spring of meetings that he will be ready. A Coach's kid with a PAC12 ready physique equals early contributor. Very under radar?
