2018 Pac 12 South

Katy is the powerhouse in the Houston area then it falls off. D/FW & Austin is where the bulk of the big schools that put out major talent are, which I believe has to do with coaching as much as anything else.
Where I live I'm 1 hour from Austin, Waco & College Station, add 1 hour Houston, add 2 hours Dallas. 5 D1 schools mom and dad can drive to so staying home in Houston isn't a big deal.
When UH was in the SWC, they pulled talent on par with UT, Arky and aTm. When the SWC collapsed under the weight of its own corruption, Arky went SEC, UT, aTm, Baylor and TT went B12 and SMU, TCU, UH and Rice fell off the radar. UH hasn't recovered. Now a generation later, you are right, players can drive a couple of hours and be at aTm, UT etc. UH is an example of what happens when you fall out of a power conference.
