2018 Rocky Mountain Showdown (8/31)

I’m still worried after their late comeback. Seemed like they got a little positive jolt from that. We most definitely should handle them but I’m always nervous about CSU’s super bowl. They have some talent and they will leave it all on the field. Hopefully our guys are hungry for that first game and don’t overlook CSU due this Hawaii game.

I feel the same way. They are mad, nothing to lose and figured out a passing game.

Buffs need to want it more

They figured out a passing game because Hawaii went into a prevent D and gave their receivers a huge cushion. Hawaii DBs didn't have near the talent to close gaps in that kind of scheme, and were in 4th quarter, high-altitude, holding-on-for-dear-life mode at the end of the game.

I've seen nothing that says HCMM hasn't ready for the CSU games he's coached, here or at SJSU.

The comeback will ensure the defense will be ready to go. You cannot ignore that talent at WR.

However, the defense and ST issues are not going to magically disappear in one week. Chev just needs to take what the defense gives him, which may mean a higher run ratio than he was planning a week ago.

One key to neutralizing the ewes passing attack is to get pressure on their QB. Although it’s sight unseen, all indications are that the Buffs will be improved in that area this season.

That game played perfectly for the Buffs.

Got film on them.

They put everything they had into the comeback after Hawaii took their foot off of the gas...and they have a short week.

Their fans are gonna no show now they believe the Rams have almost no shot.

Buffs just need to take care of business.

All I have to say is wow that is about as rough a loss as you can have to start a season. KJ played better than expected but I will wait until he faces a team that wasn’t supposed to be a complete disaster to judge him. Also put up a lot of points after Hawaii got off to a huge lead so who knows what the deal is. How do you throw for that many yards and only put up 34 points?

Buffs need to come out and play disciplened /focused football and this should be a cruise control game. Luckily focus hasn’t been an issue with this team so far in camp so hopefully everything goes smooth

CSU's dline was getting pushed back frequently on run plays. Runs up the middle and zone reads were getting gigantic yardage for Hawaii. I don't think CU needs to do anything different.

Hawaii's use of the shovel pass was perfect too-Chev may sneak a couple of those in on the goats as well

CU shouldn't have any problems piling up points and yards on their defense. My concern is with our ability on defense to put pressure on their qb and not give up big chunks in the passing game.

Never over confident going into the RMS but CU should roll the sheep.

CSU's DL did not seem to move and pursue very well.

But the big thing I saw is that they're linebackers were absolutely selling out on their first read. OLBs crashing down hard, exposing them to the QB run on the zone read. ILBs following their OG or RB key to bite on any mis-direction.

I don't think it was just a talent issue last night on defense for CSU. Schematically and with coaching, they reminded me of the hot mess at Oregon a couple years ago when the Brady Hoke as DC experiment was a disaster.

Agree with this. They're not very good in the secondary either-and we've got a ton of talent at WR as well. I'm really concerned about us if we don't blow them out.

After that disaster yesterday, anything less than an old fashioned mud holing will not look good for CU next week.

But... keep in mind we haven’t played at game speed yet. The goats will have an early advantage there.

Not that concerned with the passing game-they only started throwing every down because they were down 30. Bobo calls plays like a guy who spent 15 years in the SEC-run the ball and don't make your QB have to do too much. He'll do that Friday.

That’s the sports editor (supposedly a journalist?) at the biggest local newspaper in the state. They are not supposed to be fans, but hey, don’t let that stop you from showing your green and gold glasses, Matt!

Ever notice how a good chunk of the CU football stuff that ends up in the Post is written by one Brian Howell?

That's actually a very good development. I was cool with the occasional Buff article from Chris Dempsey, but he left for Altitude & Nuggets.com so I'm not sure who I'd trust at the DP to do a good job.

Yeah I think its been that way for a number of years. If I want good CU stuff without having to pay for it, I go his twitter or Buffzone. Does a much better job than DP.

My takeaway from watching the Ags last night: They do have some talent on offense but their defense is terrible. We will score points against them. My big question for the RMS will be whether our defense has improved, particularly on 3rd down. Last season and again last night, Ags were exceptional on 3rd down while we were one of the worst in the country defensively on 3rd down last season. If we are able to get to the QB on passing downs (which we couldn't do at all last year), than we win comfortably. If not, the RMS could be a high-scoring game that I still see us winning something like 42-31 but that is within the margin that some bad turnover luck could swing the result the other way.

tldr: If Buffs are even a little improved on defense, we win comfortably. If not, it will be a shootout.

I think the Post just picks up the Buffzone articles.
