2018 Rocky Mountain Showdown (8/31)

I cannot envision a scenario where asking this OL to protect Montez a lot in game one is a good idea. If anything, running the ball should give them some confidence.
While I agree that the OL gives me concern, I hope the coaches do not make adjustments until it's proven necessary to do so. I wouldn't want the offense to be voluntarily one dimensional.

It's the first game of the year, lets see what they got.

Not about being one dimensional, but this should be a game where the run ratio is higher than it would be other weeks. I expect about a 65/35 pass to run this season, but think it should be more like 55/45 this week. CSU showed nothing last week in the way of stopping zone read.

Ahh, I gotcha. From your post I thought you had thrown in the towel on pass protection already. I didn't watch the CSU game last week, but your post makes me think that this should be a great first game for McMillan to get his groove going.

CSU will be much improved from the first half of the UH game. On paper we should do well; but Bobo is a pretty good coach. They have some good-great WRs....some decent RBs....I think our DL over last year is the big key. It was horrid. I think they will be a big difference. ALso, our LBs are much improved with Landman inside and Lewis outside. Davion Taylor as the Buff Backer is also a big upgrade on paper. Interested to see how these new pieces fit in. Should be a good game.

The bigger issue is our OL. If they can get to montez and rattle him, they will shut us down like they did last year after the 1st q

Meh. I'm assuming that Chev has a lot of quick hitting pass plays that don't require more than 3 seconds to complete . . . well, at least more than Lindgren used to call.

Bobo is the definition of a mediocre head coach.

I would agree with that, but a couple things-One, Bobo and staff (who knows who will call plays for them on Friday given Bobo didn't against Hawaii-my guess is Bobo himself now) run an SEC type of offense. Run the ball first and don't ask your QB to do much more than not screwing things up. Ironic since the strength of their offense is probably their WRs, but whatever. Two, the talent level they'll face over what they saw Saturday is going to go way up these next three weeks. If we're motivated, this is a comfortable win.

Assumptions are great, but if our OL doesn't holdup, a quick hitting pass play can be disrupted in other ways like press coverage. It all starts up front, and dismissing that issue, which was our offense's primary issue last year, would be a mistake until otherwise proven.

CSU was more likely to pass than run last year compared to their peers. They were a very good passing team. Your description of their offense is wrong.

Good catch. Really seemed like they wanted to run first the other night, but that might have been me.

This doesn't really seem like a good year to go press coverage against our receivers though. Viska, Winfree and Ento can do well in tight windows making tough catches and the slant isn't the only quick hitting pass. Like most of these games, CSU should be worried about preventing the big play which always seems to haunt them against us. Playing bend but don't break and trying to excel in the red zone is probably their best chance at keeping the game close.

You're bringing back memories of Paul Richardson behind their secondary all game in 2013. That was such a fun performance to watch. Kid was a gazelle.

If CU’s OLine can’t hold up against CSU in week 1, then the UDub and USC games would be absolute bloodbaths.

A loss to CSU in Denver based on O-Line issues would be a prelude to very bad things. Like 2-10 bad.

They just set a single game QB record for passing, and the talent on offense for them appears to be at WR. Whatever they wanted to do, right now you have to think their strength is in the air.

Meh again. I have no idea how the OL will hold up in the passing game on Friday. I do know that there are ways to get the ball to playmaking receivers that don't require the OL to hold a pocket for 7 seconds.

This doesn't actually respond to what I said, but meh.

It is more about realizing the OL should be better in game seven than in game one, but the coaches need to find the right guys. Passing it 45 times a game in non-conference games does not really help find the right guys, but it may expose the group.

grass basketball closes the talent gaps between teams, just like the wishbone used to do, way back in the day. it allows a team more opportunities to score against a superior opponent and instead of having to recruit blue chips everywhere, you can focus on a fewer number of skill positions.

there is really little doubt that CU possesses more talent, across the board, than the sheep. but, if we get into the back and forth of a 1000+ yard passing game, anything can happen.

our dbs are really quite good but the sheep wideouts and qb appear to be good as well. instead of going strength v. strength in a "who has the ball last" style game, i would hope that we run at them, hard. control the ball and the clock and punish them until they quit. that's how you deal with the spread. shut their asses down upfront until they break.

now, all this said, i am not sure our offense philosophy or personnel are built to do what i suggest. i can assure you, as we get into conference play and our Buffs are the arguably lesser talented team on the field in some cases, you are going to see the stronger teams use exactly the tactic i suggest on us.

this is a trap game. don't fall into it. we should win by 2+ scores minimum and, of course, i will be happy if it ends up with a 55-10 CU victory.

Agreed...their QB is good. They will be hucking it. A lot.

Given concerns around depth, I’m not sure what to expect in the back half of this season. A couple of injuries here and there could spell trouble. Getting exposed by CSU in week 1 still spells trouble for week 7.

If Montez throws 45 times and the OLine escapes injury, I’m okay with that.

if our DB's are up to snuff, we can shut down the passing game.
IN the UH game, all CSU had was passing. Couldn't run for crap. BUT tehy can pass....yes, they can pass.

The WR #11 is REALLY good, and their QB, "toothless", is atually pretty solid.

I expect a big win if our D can shut down teh passing game.

Wasn’t that just a mouth guard on KJ? I seem to recall seeing him take that out and showing a full set of teeth.

Two things:

1. Montez is the one who might not escape injury if you put the OL in unrealistic pass protection percentages before they gel.

2. If the OL is not given a decent chance to gel in non-conference games, the back end of the schedule is going to get real ugly IMO.

get to the qb. that would go a long way to shutting this whole thing down in our favor.
