BOULDER – Colorado women's volleyball program is busy preparing for the upcoming 2020 spring volleyball schedule and 2020 USAVB tryouts, head coach Jesse Mahoney announced earlier this week.

The team will compete in five in-state matches, starting March 15th at the University of Denver at 2:30 p.m. The team will also travel to CSU April 11th at 1 p.m. and Northern Colorado April 24th at 6 p.m. Colorado hosts both Denver and Air Force April 18th with matches beginning at 10:30 a.m.

In addition to the spring schedule, the Buffs are prepping seven individuals to compete in a three-day tryout for USA Volleyball in Colorado Springs at the Olympic Training Center. Jenna Ewert and Leah Clayton will make their second-straight appearance for Colorado at the tryouts, while Brynna DeLuzio (also second appearance), Sterling Parker, Jill Schneggenburger, Elissa Alcantara and Meegan Hart.

The tryouts will begin February 21 and run through the 23rd. Last year both Rachel Whipple and Leah Clayton made it onto USAVB Collegiate Teams in Anaheim after competing against nearly 300 collegiate student-athletes.

"
BOULDER – Following an under .500 season, the University of Colorado women's volleyball team is poised to explode in the 2020 season with three additional upperclassmen additions and a plethora of young talent.

The fifth season under head coach Jesse Mahoney will be a turning point as the Buffs are loaded at all positions with a fine balance of youth with upperclassmen leadership. Take last year's squad and mix in a year of growth along with the return of Brynna DeLuzio and the first look at Leah Clayton at outside and that would already raise hopes that this team is set to return to the 'Big Dance.' Then mix in a sixth-year middle Rachael Fara that has a strong slide along with 6-foot, 6-inch redshirt freshman Alexia Kuehl and you have a cocktail of danger for the rest of the Pac-12.

"This may be the deepest team we have had since our staff came to Colorado," said Mahoney. "We were young and talented last season, but we redshirted three scholarship players making us a little thin. I'm excited to have those players available this season – along with some talented additions and all the experience our freshmen and sophomores gained from last year. We are primed for a great run this season."
...

While the Buffs have nine different starters from the past two seasons returning, the abundance of talent at every position will make for an action packed, 'every day is a battle' season for Colorado in the 2020 year.

"We made some good progress the second half of last season and we are looking to build on that in 2020," said Mahoney. "We had an abbreviated spring with no outside competitions, so we are all excited to get back in the gym and get to work."
"

With only 2 freshmen coming in this season (last year's #10 ranked class had 7), the team was NOT going to finish with any kind of top 25 school recruiting ranking, but this year's freshman class does get named "honorable mention" by prepvolleyball.com.

Direct link to article - https://cubuffs.com/news/2020/5/11/volleyball-cu-recruiting-class-named-honorable-mention.aspx

"
CULVER CITY, Calif. – The University of Colorado women's volleyball team's 2020 recruiting class was named an honorable mention recruiting class by PrepVolleyball.com.

"We are excited for our 2020 class to get some recognition nationally," said head coach Jesse Mahoney. "It's a small class but I see them doing big things in Boulder."

The Buffaloes added two recruits that count towards PrepVolleyball.com's ranking in Maya Tabron and Morgan Riddle. The team also added transfer Rachael Fara, who is not accounted for in the rankings.

Colorado had the 10th-ranked class in the nation last season with seven freshmen brought in. Like this year, Leah Clayton and Meegan Hart were not a part of that ranking. With the addition of Tabron, CU now had six top-100 recruits on its roster.

Of course, everything is "in pencil" right now, but we have the 1st 2020/21 schedule news I can find for any Olympic sport (props to the Volleytalk forum for the link).

Per the schedule CSU has just released (https://csurams.com/sports/womens-volleyball/schedule/2020), it's planned the Buffs and Rams will, like last season, play a home and home on back to back days this season, with the Buffs in Fort Collins on Friday the 18th, and the Rams heading to Boulder the next evening. (Both matches scheduled for 7:00 PM starts.)

Also re the CSU schedule- a couple things it looks like their (Mtn. West) Conference has done scheduling-wise (be interesting to see if the Pac 12 does this for any of the sports (bball, lacrosse, volleyball) that typically have teams twice - they've decreased the number of conference matches from 18 to 16, and for the conference teams they're playing twice, it is NOT home and home anymore, but instead both matches will be played at one of the teams or the other to limit the travel and days away from home (when teams are playing twice in a season, they're all on back to back days).

Obviously nothing to do with the current team, but did want to say congrats and best wishes (!!!) to a couple #ForeverBuffs as, per the below from Asst. Coach Maes, looks like volleyball alum Stephanie Shadley and football alum Aaron Haigler got married today!

Can't find myself where this has been released, but per a poster (VolleyballFella) on Volleytalk (https://volleytalk.proboards.com/post/2355699/thread), more possible info on the non-conference schedule. Quoting his post:

"
COLORADO hasn't released its full schedule yet (along with the rest of the PAC), but they have released 3 weeks of non conference match-ups.
They are limiting travel and staying within 40 miles over 3 weeks. These might be the only non-conference matches they have, but likely still have one travel weekend before PAC conference begins.

- ILLINOIS and IOWA home matches (year 3 of this current PAC/B1G challenge)
- DENVER Home & Away matches (2019 Summit conference champion and 2019 NCAA Tourney appearance)
- COLORADO STATE Home & Away matches (2019 Mtn West conference champion and 2019 NCAA Tourney appearance)
"

The above was in the Daily Camera.

CU lost a tournament out of town when too many teams decided not to go. Jesse is looking to find something else if he can. Article didn't sound very positive about that.

Without getting into specifics (since this, like most on the prepvolleyball website, is premium content), wanted to mention it's looking like the Buff's 2021 recruiting class could end up being a solid one, as prepvolleyball.com has just released an overall Top 150 player ranking for that class, and 3 (of the 5 known) Buff verbal commits are on it.

(As with all collegiate sports, it seems the rich usually get richer, and it's definitely true per this Top 150 list, as the perennial power Corn has verbals from the top 3 in this Prepvolleyball ranking, and 4 in the top 10.)

Do want to note that Prepvolleyball releases two types of rankings, and this 1st one is based on how they evaluate a player's performance and skill as of now. It will be interesting to see how much it differs from their "Senior Aces" rankings (which last year was released in Sept.); THAT list is where they rank players based on their (or more accurately the coaches they query) estimate/ guesstimate of a student-athlete's potential at the college level.

I don't know how to link instagram posts, but Emily Demure is leaving the volleyball team. I just looked and she is no longer on the roster.

I don't know how to link instagram posts, but Emily Demure is leaving the volleyball team. I just looked and she is no longer on the roster.
Well, she was already a fourth year student last year so she maybe graduated and, with the season up in the air this year, may have decided not to hang around in a backup roll.

I don't think she was going to get much playing time. With Daluzio back she kind of lost the only pace she could get time.

That is what I figured also.

She is graduating this summer and concentrating on her Miss Colorado duties. She also said she didn't think she could play as she has covid concerns.

Mahoney confirmed she is graduating and looking to pursue a professional modelling career

Looks like the small (2 person) freshman class of 2020 has arrived. Welcome to Boulder to them!

(Be interesting to hear of any changes, but from the last Pac 12 announcement, practices for the Olympic sports may commence on August 15th.)

Nice general article describing CU's recruiting philosophies and some successes, with multiple quotes from Coach Mahoney.

"
BOULDER – Colorado volleyball head coach Jesse Mahoney, along with associate head coach Lee Maes and assistant coach Evan Sanders, has been working to build a national-contending team through recruiting some of the nation's best to Boulder.

Under Mahoney, Colorado has 69 wins, two NCAA tournament appearances including a trip to the Sweet Sixteen, two All-Americans and three Pac-12 All-Freshman selections in just four years. All this has just been a prelude to what is to come, as Mahoney and company have searched nationwide for the most talented and best fitting individuals to build their winning culture.

"Every player we recruit has to be elitely talented at something – skill, size, arm-swing, platform, explosivity, competitiveness, etc.," said Mahoney. "Obviously, you want players that have the potential to be elite in several of these talents – or you feel that with coaching they can grow into more of these talents. Our coaching staff prides itself in training and developing talent. When we recruit a player we are always looking ahead to make sure that we can leverage their talents in a way that will lead to our team's success."

Not any hard news (at least that I could see or hear), but a chance to see a little video action of the vball team practicing, as well as Coach Mahoney giving an update on the team, in the below tweet. (Vball footage starts at the 2:50 mark of the video.)

Also, just for convenience (it's already linked to in the signing news thread), an article on the two 2021 freshmen, both top 100 in their class (per prepvolleyball.com), who have signed on to be part of the 2021 Buff team.

Does anyone have any info on what happened to Danielle Price? She is no longer listed on the roster at cubuffs.com. Did she transfer to another school? Another option for leaving could be medical reasons. I know she had injuries during her time at CU. Or is she opting out of the season due to covid concerns? Does anyone have any insight? Curious fan.

Just wanted to mention that, per a Volleytalk thread (https://volleytalk.proboards.com/thread/82149/d1-schedules-spring-2021?page=6), a Pac 12 volleyball schedule (at least for conference games) should be out very soon. If the info in the thread is correct, a couple changes from normal years:
  • Like the Big 10 schedules recently officially released, teams would meet each other for both season matches back to back (the Big 10 is having matches on back to back days) at one university or another, rather than having home and home series with each team.
  • Rather than the typical slightly unbalanced 20 match conference season, every team will be playing each other twice, so a 22 match schedule.

The main question I have is whether they're planning on (or is the conference allowing) ANY non-conference matches, or will it strictly be in conference?

Nice interview with Coach Mahoney, and they also showed snippets of a practice.

A few things from it:
  • Sounds like they're planning on scrimmaging DU this weekend.
  • Coach Mahoney couldn't say much of anything in detail about the schedule, but did confirm some of what I'd heard from a Volleytalk thread and summarized back in post #57:
    • There will be no non-conference matches.
    • Each Pac 12 team will, virus and other factors of course dependent, play each other twice this season.
    • To minimize travel, the teams will be playing only one opponent twice in succession, with one school or the other hosting both matches..
Edit- Wanted to add that, from what was preliminarily proposed by the NCAA (included in the Olympic Covid-19 thread) and from what I'm seeing as other schools and conferences have started releasing their schedules, it looks like January 22nd is the 1st day real matches can take place. Because of this, I assume the Pac 12 schedule should be released any day now.
